        Association between PON1 Gene SNPs and Growth and Carcass Traits in Beef Cattle

        Paraoxonase-1 (PON1), like lipoprotein lipase (LPL), plays a key role in the metabolism and physiology of mammalian growth. The objectives of this study were to estimate the allele and genotype frequencies at the PON1/EcoRV and PON1/AluI loci in three genetic groups of beef cattle and to determine associations between these polymorphisms and growth and carcass traits. Genotyping was performed on 30 Angus, 32 Hereford and 26 Simmental. The association analysis was carried out using the GLM procedure of SAS 9.1 and the least squares means of the genotypes were compared by the Tukey's test. Animals with AG genotype at the PON1/EcoRV locus had higher weight at the time of entry into the fattening corrals ($329.97{\pm}6.08kg$) and close to the time of slaughter ($577.56{\pm}8.32kg$) and net meat weight ($275.89{\pm}4.05kg$) and fitted tenderness ($3.10{\pm}0.19kg$) (p<0.05). Animals with AA genotype at the PON1/AluI locus had higher weight at the time of entry ($333.37{\pm}8.93kg$) and slaughter ($576.82{\pm}13.18kg$) and net meat weight ($275.49{\pm}6.43kg$) and average daily gain ($0.68{\pm}0.02kg/d$) (p<0.05). The meat color score was also significantly higher (p<0.05). Between genotypes and breeds, there were significant differences observed except for TBW, REMG, MBS, REA and MCS. As a metabolism gene, genotypes of the SNPs of PON1 gene might be reflecting BFT directly, such as $A_eA_eG_aG_a$ genotype in this experiment.

        The effect of viscosity ratio on drop pinch-off dynamics in two-fluid flow

        Drop pinch-off draws a lot of interest from scientists and engineers because of widely practical applications as well as the fascinating mechanism of finite-time singularities and self-similar behavior. This work experimentally investigates the effect of viscosity ratio on the local pinch-off mechanism of liquid drops in both air and viscous fluids, with a high-speed camera. The results show that for 56 ≤ λ ≤ 6.3 × 103 and 0.009 ≤ λ ≤ 0.061, drop pinch-off exhibits self-similar profile which is asymmetric and conical away from hmin. Drop pinch-off in air with low viscosity ratios shows either in inertial regime (I) or transition from inertial to viscous regime (I→V). But the kinetics undergoes the inertial regime (I) to inertial-viscous regime (IV) through an intermediate viscous regime (V) when the viscosity ratio becomes larger. Drop pinch-off in viscous fluids displays the transition from inertial to viscous regime (I→V). These results agree well with Eggers’s universal solution until it becomes unstable and the previous literature. The viscosity ratio indeed affects the drop pinch-off dynamics as well as interface deformation. Our experiments enrich the understanding of the interaction between the internal and external fluids on drop pinch-off behavior near the singularity point.

        Breakup dynamics of ferrofluid droplet in a microfluidic T-junction

        This paper investigated the breakup dynamics of ferrofluid droplet in a microfluidic T-junction with the magnetic field. Droplet breakup types with permanent obstruction, part obstruction and without obstruction were observed. The droplet breakup processes with permanent and part obstruction could be divided into squeezing, transition and pinch-off stages. The minimum width of droplet neck could be scaled as power-law relationships with time for squeezing stage and with remaining time for the last two stages. The droplet breakup process without obstruction has only last two stages. The results show that the magnetic field could affect the dynamics of droplet breakup.
