Two Years after the <i>Hebei Spirit</i> OilSpill: Residual Crude-Derived Hydrocarbons and Potential AhR-MediatedActivities in Coastal Sediments

        Hong, Seongjin,Khim, Jong Seong,Ryu, Jongseong,Park, Jinsoon,Song, Sung Joon,Kwon, Bong-Oh,Choi, Kyungho,Ji, Kyunghee,Seo, Jihyun,Lee, Sangwoo,Park, Jeongim,Lee, Woojin,Choi, Yeyong,Lee, Kyu Tae,Kim, AmericanChemical Society 2012 Environmental science & technology Vol.46 No.3

<P>The <I>Hebei Spirit</I> oil spill occurredin December2007 approximately 10 km off the coast of Taean, South Korea, on theYellow Sea. However, the exposure and potential effects remain largelyunknown. A total of 50 surface and subsurface sediment samples werecollected from 22 sampling locations at the spill site in order todetermine the concentration, distribution, composition of residualcrudes, and to evaluate the potential ecological risk after two yearsof oil exposure. Samples were extracted and analyzed for 16 polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 20 alkyl-PAHs, 15 aliphatic hydrocarbons, and total petroleum hydrocarbons using GC-MSD. AhR-mediated activityassociated with organic sediment extracts was screened using the H4IIE-<I>luc</I> cell bioassay. The response of the benthic invertebratecommunity was assessed by mapping the macrobenthic fauna. Elevatedconcentrations of residual crudes from the oil spill were primarilyfound in muddy bottoms, particularly in subsurface layers. In general, the bioassay results were consistent with the chemistry data in adose-dependent manner, although the mass-balance was incomplete. Moreweathered samples containing greater fractions of alkylated PAHs exhibitedgreater AhR activity, due to the occurrence of recalcitrant AhR agonistspresent in residual oils. The macrobenthic population distributionexhibits signs of species-specific tolerances and/or recolonizationof certain species such as <I>Batillaria</I> during weatheringperiods. Although the <I>Hebei Spirit</I> oil spill wasa severe oil exposure, it appears the site is recovering two yearslater.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/esthag/2012/esthag.2012.46.issue-3/es203491b/production/images/medium/es-2011-03491b_0001.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/es203491b'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Optimization of Diode-pumped Cesium Vapor Laser Using Frequency Locked Pump Laser

        Seongjin Hong,Byungjoo Kong,Yong Soo Lee,Kyunghwan Oh 한국광학회 2018 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.2 No.5

We propose a diode-pumped cesium laser using frequency locking of a pump laser that can effectively increase the maximum output power of the cesium laser. We simultaneously monitored the absorption spectrum of cesium and the laser output power, and the frequency of pump laser was locked at the center of the D2 absorption line of the cesium atom to obtain an effective gain enhancement. Using this scheme, we have achieved output power increase of ~0.1 W compared to when frequency locking was not applied. Furthermore, by optimizing the temperature of the cesium cell and the reflectivity of the output coupler, we successfully achieved an output power of 1.4 W using the pump power of 2.9 W, providing a slope efficiency of 61.5% and optical-to-optical efficiency of 49%.

Thermo-optic characteristic of DNA thin solid film and its application as a biocompatible optical fiber temperature sensor

        Hong, Seongjin,Jung, Woohyun,Nazari, Tavakol,Song, Sanggwon,Kim, Taeoh,Quan, Chai,Oh, Kyunghwan Optical Society of America 2017 Optics letters Vol. No.

<P>We report unique thermo-optical characteristics of DNA-Cetyl tri-methyl ammonium (DNA-CTMA) thin solid film with a large negative thermo-optical coefficient of -3.4 x 10(-4)/degrees C in the temperature range from 20 degrees C to 70 degrees C without any observable thermal hysteresis. By combining this thermo-optic DNA film and fiber optic multimode interference (MMI) device, we experimentally demonstrated a highly sensitive compact temperature sensor with a large spectral shift of 0.15 nm/degrees C. The fiber optic MMI device was a concatenated structure with single-mode fiber (SMF)-coreless silica fiber (CSF)-single mode fiber (SMF) and the DNA-CTMA film was deposited on the CSF. The spectral shifts of the device in experiments were compared with the beam propagation method, which showed a good agreement. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America</P>

Localized Eigenmodes in a Triangular Multicore Hollow Optical Fiber for Space-division Multiplexing in C+L Band

Seongjin Hong,Kyunghwan Oh 한국광학회 2018 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.2 No.3

We propose a triangular-multicore hollow optical fiber (TMC-HOF) design for uncoupled mode-division and space-division multiplexing. The TMC-HOF has three triangular cores, and each core has three modes: LP01 and two split LP11 modes. The asymmetric structure of the triangular core can split the LP11 modes. Using the proposed structures, nine independent modes can propagate in a fiber. We use a fully vectorial finite-element method to estimate effective index, chromatic dispersion, differential group delay (DGD), and confinement loss by controlling the parameters of the TMC-HOF structure. We confirm that the proposed TMC-HOF shows flattened chromatic dispersion, low DGD, low confinement loss, low core-to-core crosstalk, and low crosstalk between adjacent modes. The proposed TMC-HOF can provide a common platform for MDM and SDM applications.

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures linked to anthropogenic toxic substances pollution in a highly industrialized area of South Korea

        Hong, Seongjin,Lee, Yeonjung,Yoon, Seo Joon,Lee, Junghyun,Kang, Sujin,Won, Eun-Ji,Hur, Jin,Khim, Jong Seong,Shin, Kyung-Hoon Elsevier 2019 MARINE POLLUTION BULLETIN Vol.144 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Sources of organic matter in a polluted coastal embayment (Lake Sihwa) indicated that δ13C and δ15N of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments could be distinguished by land-use type and surrounding activities. Specifically, low δ15N occurred in inland creeks near industrial complex, where severe contamination by persistent toxic substances (PTSs) is evidenced. To identify the sources of 15N-depleted organic matter and PTSs, the SPM and/or sediments were collected along ~8 km of the Singil Creek and in stormwater drainage pipes that carried pollutants to the creeks from upland areas. Results indicated that stormwater originating in industrial areas was the main source of low δ15N and elevated PTSs, which appeared to flow into stormwater drains with rainwater and eventually into the creeks at stormwater outfalls. To improve the water quality of inland creeks, it will be necessary to reduce the amount of untreated stormwater entering stormwater drainage system from industrial complex.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Stable isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) identified sources of organic matter in a polluted lake. </LI> <LI> Relatively low δ15N values are characteristic in inland creeks near a polluted industrial area. </LI> <LI> Sediments of inland creeks were severely polluted by persistent toxic substances. </LI> <LI> Low δ15N and great concentrations of PTSs mainly originated from untreated stormwater. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Two-mode Fiber with a Reduced Mode Overlap for Uncoupled Mode-division Multiplexing in C+L Band

        Seongjin Hong,Kyoungyeon Choi,Yong Soo Lee,Kyunghwan Oh 한국광학회 2018 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.2 No.3

We proposed a two-mode fiber (TMF) design that can effectively reduce the mode overlap between LP01 and LP11 modes by using a W-shaped index profile core structure, which is a primary concern in uncoupled mode division multiplexing (MDM). TMF has a three-layered core structure; central circular core, inner cladding, and outer ring core. We confirmed that in an optimal structure the LP01 mode was highly confined to the central core while the LP11 mode was guided along the outer ring core to result in a minimum overlap integral. We used a full-vectorial finite element method to estimate effective index, differential group delay (DGD), confinement loss, chromatic dispersion, and mode overlap controlling the parameters of the W-shaped structure. The optimized W-profile fiber provided optical characteristics within the ITU-T recommended standards over the entire C+L band.

Arsenic speciation in environmental multimedia samples from the Youngsan River Estuary, Korea: A comparison between freshwater and saltwater

Hong, Seongjin,Choi, Sung-Deuk,Khim, Jong Seong Elsevier 2018 Environmental pollution Vol.237 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Differences in the distribution, partitioning, and bioaccumulation characteristics of arsenicals between freshwater and saltwater systems remain poorly understood. To determine the characteristics of distribution and behavior of arsenicals, multimedia environmental samples including water, suspended particles, zooplankton, sediments, and porewater were collected from inner (five sites, freshwater) and outer (five sites, saltwater) regions of the estuary dike of the Youngsan River Estuary in South Korea (Nov., 2012). Six organic and inorganic forms of As were separated and measured using HPLC–ICP/MS equipped with an anion exchange column. Concentrations of arsenicals in water samples of the inner region (mean = 1.5 μg As L−1) were significantly lower than in those of the outer region (mean = 5.2 μg As L−1). Conversely, concentrations of As in suspended particles in the inner region (mean = 14 μg As g−1) were much greater than in the outer region (mean = 5.7 μg As g−1). The field-based distribution coefficient (Kd) for As depended strongly on salinity; relatively greater Kd values were found in freshwater compared with saltwater. The AsV was found to be the major form of As in all water and particle samples in both inner and outer regions. The zooplankton species were significantly distinguishable between the inner and outer regions; cladocerans were the most dominant species in freshwater and cyclopoida were predominantly found in saltwater. The As concentrations in zooplankton were shown to be particle-concentration dependent, suggesting that dietary exposure plays a substantial role in the bioaccumulation of As. Inorganic arsenicals, such as AsV and AsIII were the most dominant forms found in zooplankton. Partitioning behavior of As between porewater and sediments was similar to that in water–particle distributions. The results of the present study enhance the understanding of As biogeochemistry in river and estuarine environments.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Multimedia distributions of As were distinguished between freshwater and saltwater. </LI> <LI> AsV was a major form in the water column, while AsIII was predominant in sediments. </LI> <LI> Kd values of As were significantly greater in freshwater than those in saltwater. </LI> <LI> As bioaccumulation in zooplankton showed a particle-concentration dependent manner. </LI> <LI> Salinity and adsorption onto SPM are crucial factors influencing As biogeochemistry. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
