This paper presents an overview of the coastal environment problems in Japan. Japanese coastal zones have faced various environment problems particularly since the economic growth started in 1960s. The predominant problems differ with the type of the coast: coastal erosion is a major concern on the open coasts, while semi-enclosed bays and inland sea suffer from serious pollution and loss of natural ecosystems. Recently, new subjects of research emerged, including conservation and creation of environment, and climate change and sea-level rise issues. The environmental problems have a broad and complex nature, and are related with circulations of water, sediments, and material within land, coastal seas, and oceans. Therefore, it is needed to develop a large-scale framework to seek the solution of the problems. The Committee on Coastal Engineering JSCE established Sub-committee on Global Environment Studies to expand its scope to the wider areas in 1991. The past subjects of the sub-committee were, first, $quot;Global Environmental Problems Related to Coastal Engineering$quot; and, secondly, $quot;Desirable Future of the Coastal Zone -Tasks of Coastal Engineering toward 21 Century$quot;. We now perform the third period study titled $quot;Large-Scale Environmental Problems in the Coastal Zone.$quot; These activities are also introduced.
