Thermal strain imaging of chalcogenide in a phase change memory

Thermal strain imaging using a scanning probe microscope enables us to observe thermal distribution with high resolution. A phase change memory (PCM) based on chalcogenide glasses switches their two stable states having low and relatively high resistances by Joule heating. Images obtained by thermal strain imaging revealed that Joule heating was mainly generated in particular regions and some boundaries. The large fluctuation of increases in temperature in the active area should greatly affect phase change in PCM.
Implementation of Medical Diagnostic System Based on Epidemiological Data

Objective: We implemented automatic online medical consultation software. It infers disease of patients with knowledge about symptoms and the epidemiologic data. And we compared its performance of inference with that of human doctors.Methods: This software accepts information about users' age, sex, and symptoms, lists up diseases compatible with these information, and sorts diseases by probability. We implement this software with Ruby and C. Results: We compared diseases listed up by this software with those that by two human doctors, and found that 1) 90% of confirmed diagnoses was included in the list this software inferred, and 2) more than 50% of diseases in the list this software inferred are same diseases as ones both of two human doctors inferred. Conclusion: This software can not determine final diagnosis. But this software lists up probable diseases only by interview. Then we believe this software will be useful for patients when they want to check themselves before consulting their doctor. An attempt was made to apply digital image correlation (DIC) strain analysis to in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of bending deformation to quantify local strain distribution inside a ZnMgAl-alloy coating in deformation. Interstitial-free steel sheets were hot-dipped in a Zn-3Mg-6Al (mass%) alloy melt at 400 ℃ for 2 s. The specimens were deformed using a miniature-sized 4-point bending test machine inside the SEM chamber. The observed in situ SEM images were used for DIC strain analysis. The hot-dip ZnMgAl-alloy coating exhibited a solidification microstructure composed of a threephase eutectic of fine Al (fcc), Zn (hcp), and Zn<sub>2</sub>Mg phases surrounding the primary solidified Al phases. The relatively coarsened Zn<sub>2</sub>Mg phases were locally observed inside the ZnMgAl-alloy coating. The DIC strain analysis revealed that the strain was localized in the primary solidified Al phases and fine eutectic microstructure around the Zn<sub>2</sub>Mg phase. The results indicated high deformability of the multi-phase microstructure of the ZnMgAl-alloy coating.

At the Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KURRI), a clinical study of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) using a neutron irradiation facility installed at the research nuclear reactor has been regularly performed since February 1990. As of November 2014, 510 clinical irradiations were carried out using the reactor-based system. The world’s first accelerator-based neutron irradiation system for BNCT clinical irradiation was completed at this institute in early 2009, and the clinical trial using this system was started in 2012. A shift of BCNT from special particle therapy to a general one is now in progress. To promote and support this shift, improvements to the irradiation system, as well as its preparation, and improvements in the physical engineering and the medical physics processes, such as dosimetry systems and quality assurance programs, must be considered. The recent advances in BNCT at KURRI are reported here with a focus on physical engineering and medical physics topics.

Rotaxanes comprise a class of interlocked moleculescontaining a wheel threaded onto an axle with blockinggroups on the ends to keep thewheel fromsliding off.Here,weshow that [2][bis(2-(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbonyloxy)ethyl)ammoniumtrifluoromethanesulfonate]-[dibenzo-24-crown-8]rotaxane (TRO-A0001), a rotaxane compound, exerted agrowth inhibitory effect on several human cancer cell lines.AnMTT assay revealed an IC50 of 14-830 nMfor TRO-A0001 inthese cells. Neither the wheel nor the axle part alone inhibitedtumor cell growth, suggesting that the complete rotaxanemolecule with its unique ‘‘intramolecular mobility’’ is requiredto inhibit cell growth. Annexin-V/PI staining provided evidenceof the induction of apoptosis, which was further confirmedby the observation of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerasecleavage. Furthermore, a cell cycle analysis using flowcytometry showed that TRO-A0001 treatment resulted in G1arrest in glioblastoma T98G and melanoma G361 cells. Animmunoblot analysis revealed that in both cell lines, TROA0001treatment caused the induction of p21/Cip1, therebydown-regulating Cdks 2, 4 and 6 and reducing Cyclins D1 andE. The results presented in this study demonstrate cytotoxicityof the rotaxane compound and its potential as a lead compoundfor the development of a chemotherapeutic agent againstcancer.

Background/Aims: The frequency and details of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) complications in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify characteristics of NAFLD in patients with IBD.Methods: We retrospectively identified and enrolled patients with IBD diagnosed with or without NAFLD by undergoing abdominal computed tomography (CT) at our institution between 2005 and 2020. The primary endpoint was the complication rate of NAFLD in patients with IBD. Secondary endpoints were the clinical characteristics of nonobese patients with IBD and comorbid NAFLD and their association with nutritional and inflammatory parameters.Results: Twenty-one (21.9%) of 96 eligible patients with IBD also had NAFLD. In nonobese patients (defined as patients with a body mass index <25 kg/m<sup>2</sup>), C-reactive protein (CRP; <i>P</i><0.001) and alanine aminotransferase (<i>P</i>=0.018) levels were higher and the albumin level (<i>P</i>=0.005) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI; <i>P</i>=0.002) values were lower in patients with NAFLD than in those without NAFLD. The PNI value was positively correlated (<i>P</i><0.001) and the CRP level was negatively correlated (<i>P</i>=0.001) with the hepatosplenic ratio. However, in the NAFLD combined group, PNI (<i>P</i><0.05) and CRP values (<i>P</i><0.001) were improved over time after CT imaging by continuing IBD treatment.Conclusions: Worsening nutritional and inflammatory status in IBD patients is associated with complications of NAFLD. Diagnosis of NAFLD in IBD patients using CT imaging might be useful not only for early detection of NAFLD but also in assessing the need for therapeutic intervention for IBD.
