The primate fovea is an anatomical speicalzation found in human, ape and most monkey retinas. The fovea is reponsible for our high visual actuity and good color vision due to its unique complement of red and green cones connected into the midget ganglion cell synaptic pathway.
Economic Sanctions and Leader Survival, 1945-2006

Our study joins recent scholarship that examines the political impact of economic sanctions on targeted societies. While some studies find that sanctions destabilize the incumbent leadership of targeted countries, others reveal no relationship between sanctions and political survival. In this study, we seek to clarify the effect of economic sanctions on leader survival by identifying and addressing the contrasting and conditional expectations for the political effects of sanctions underspecified in previous research. We also provide the most comprehensive statistical test, for the 1945 to 2006 period. Our analysis shows that economic sanctions help targeted autocratic leaders to extend their stay in power. However, sanctions are found to exert no discernable political effects to targeted leaders in democracies.
Structure and Design of Broadly-Neutralizing Antibodies Against HIV

Since the discovery more than 30 years ago of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as the causative agent of the deadly disease, acquired immune deficiency disease (AIDS), there have been no efficient vaccines against the virus. For the infection of the virus, the HIV surface glycoprotein gp120 first recognizes the CD4 receptor on the target helper T-cell, which initiates HIV fusion with the target cell and, if unchecked, leads to destruction of the patient’s immune system. Despite the difficulty of developing appropriate immune responses in HIV-infected individuals, patient sera often contain antibodies that have broad neutralization activity, indicating the possibility of immunolo-gical treatment and prevention. Recently, through extensive structural studies of neutralizing antibodies of HIV in complex with gp120, the critical mechanisms of broad neutralization against HIV have been elucidated. Based on these discoveries, the structure-aided designs of antibodies and novel scaffolds were performed to create extremely potent neutralizing antibodies against HIV. These new discoveries and advances shed light on the road to development of efficient immunological therapies against AIDS.

Penetrating gallbladder injury in a pediatric patient: a case report

Penetrating gallbladder injuries are uncommon in the pediatric population. The treatment varies according to the severity of the injury and the patient’s hemodynamics. We present the case of an 11-year-old male with an accidental pellet gunshot wound to the right upper abdomen that resulted in a grade III liver laceration and damage to the anterior gallbladder wall. The patient underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy with drain placement. Postoperative radiography of the surgical specimen confirmed the presence of the pellet in the gallbladder. The patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged home on postoperative day 3. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a feasible treatment option for penetrating gallbladder injuries in hemodynamically stable patients.
Automated electrospray ionization FT-ICR mass spectrometry for petroleum analysis

<P>Analysis of petroleum samples at the molecular level by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) typically requires a prolonged accumulation of ions and/or summing up a large number of scans. Here, a chip-based micro-ESI system (Advion NanoMate, Ithaca, NY) has been successfully automated in combination with FT-ICR MS analysis of petroleum samples. A foil-sealed 96-well glass plate prevents solvent evaporation, with no visible loss of sample after 20 h of continuous operation. Mass spectra obtained from the same sample but taken from different wells after various time delays were very similar. Data from replicate samples in different wells could be combined to enhance mass spectral signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range. Furthermore, the automated data acquisition eliminates sample carryover, and produces heteroatom class distribution, double-bond equivalents (DBE), and carbon number very similar to those from the conventional (manual) micro-ESI experiments.</P>
