Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) coated graphite felt electrodes for vanadium redox flow battery

In this study, Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was used to improve electrochemical performance of electrodes. To use this effect, various amounts of PAN were doped in the electrode and heat-treated for VRFB performance tests. The cell with 4wt% PAN coated electrodes shows much higher efficiency and capacity than the bare electrode. To estimate electrochemical activity of PAN coated electrodes, CV was performed. The peak potential difference of 4wt% PAN coated electrode was smaller than that of reference electrode. And ratio of oxidation and reduction peak current of 4 wt% PAN coated electrode was closer to 1 than reference electrode. It was confirmed that the electrode performance was improved when PAN coating was carried out on the electrode, which resulted in the improvement of the VRFB performance at high current densities.

Oleic acid was used to improve electrochemical performance of electrodes. Charge and discharge tests were performed at various current densities (25-150mA/㎠) using unit cells with oleic acid-treated electrodes. At higher current densities than 75mA/㎠, the efficiencies of cells with oleic acid-treated electrodes were higher than that of the reference electrode. As the current density increased, the efficiency difference between the electrode treated with oleic acid and the reference electrode gradually increased. When the charge / discharge test was performed for 100 cycles at a current density of 100mA/㎠, the cell using the oleic acid-treated electrode showed a smaller voltage efficiency reduction than the cell using the reference electrode.
