Study on Heat Transfer Characteristics in the Channel Flow with Rectangular Winglet Pair

Longitudinal vortices generated by winglet type vortex generators play an important role in improvement of thermal performance of heat exchangers. Heat transfer may be enhanced by placing an appropriate configuration of winglet pair. In present study, three-dimensional numerical investigations have been carried out for flow through a channel with rectangular winglet pair (RWP) mounted on its bottom wall. Effect of angle of attack of RWP on flow and heat transfer characteristics has been investigated for a fixed value of flow Reynolds number. Flow and temperature field characteristics are presented using streamlines and temperature contours near the plate surface. Enhancement in heat transfer has been examined by using Nusselt number. Secondary flows generated by winglets are analyzed with the help of secondary flow intensity, which also helps in the estimation of heat transfer enhancement.
Study on heat transfer enhancement using helical screw tape in a tube

One of the important parameters of heat exchangers is heat transfer enhancement, which can be improved by enhancing the heat transfer coefficient of fluid. Numerous investigations have been performed by researchers for the improvement of heat transfer. The literature on the application of various kinds of inserts in a tube flow suggests that the twisted tape inserts deliver promising effect for the heat transfer enhancement. Among different types of twisted tape inserts, the influence of helical screw tape on heat transfer performance has been focused on the present work. The influence of helical screw tape on the thermal performance has been examined for different Reynolds numbers. The helical screw tape in a tube shows tremendous enhancement in heat transfer as compared to a plain tube. This is because the presence of helical screw tape generates high-intensity swirl flow and this swirling flow generated by the twisted tapes promotes turbulence in the flow, which enhances the fluid mixing and thereby enhancement in heat transfer.
