      • Changed Political Attitudes in the Middle East Following Western Intervention

Katherine Meyer,Helen Rizzo,Yousef Ali 한국사회학회 2003 한국사회학회 사회학대회 논문집 Vol.- No.-

This paper examines changes in the beliefs and attitudes of 1500 Kuwaiti citizens in 1994, two years after Western intervention during the first Gulf War, and again in 1996 and 1998. It focuses on views towards democracy as a form of government and toward affinities with the West, the Gulf Coast countries and the Arab World. Change is analyzed within religious and social structures specific to Islam and the Middle East. In general, Kuwaitis became more supportive of a democratic model and governing through mutual consent and less favorable toward relying on a strong authority for stability. These findings demonstrate increasing preference for modernized, democratic governance. Also, Kuwaitis felt friendlier to Western nations over time. Nonetheless, Kuwaiti citizens became less interested in trade alliances with the West and in attending to Western media. Sentiments gravitated more toward other Gulf Coast countries on military and economic issues. There was evidence of increased preference for Arab solidarity and decreased hostility toward nations that had supported Iraq against Kuwait in the first Gulf War. The direction of change was pervasive across sub-populations, although less advantaged groups deviated from the pattern of change. (190 words)

      • Preservice Teachers’ Views of Culturally Diverse Students :A Case Study

        Danielle Dani,Helen Meyer,Debbie Jackson 朝鮮大學校 師範大學 附設 敎科敎育硏究所 2010 敎科敎育硏究 Vol.31 No.2

This article reports on a research study that took place in a secondary science methods class and was designed to explore preservice science teachers’understanding of culturally diverse students. The framework for culturally relevant science was based on the constructs of critical science education laid out in Barton and Osborne’s (2001) introduction to Teaching science in diverse settings. The course was taught at an urban high school and involved high school students engaging in science inquiry activities with the preservice teachers followed by debriefings and instruction for the preservice teachers. Data were gathered about the preservice teachers’perceptions of culturally diverse students using a qualitative case study research design. Findings elaborate the preservice teachers’conceptions of urban students and perceptions of their roles as teachers. These views have the potential of informing science teacher preparation for culturally relevant science teaching.
