Evaluation of Yeast Diversity During Wine Fermentations with Direct Inoculation and pied de cuve Method at an Industrial Scale

( Erhu Li ),( Chuan He Liu ),( Yan Lin Liu ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2012 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.22 No.7

The diversity and composition of yeast populations may greatly impact wine quality. This study investigated the yeast microbiota in two different types of wine fermentations: direct inoculation of a commercial starter versus pied de cuve method at an industrial scale. The pied de cuve fermentation entailed growth of the commercial inoculum used in the direct inoculation fermentation for further inoculation of additional fermentations. Yeast isolates were collected from different stages of wine fermentation and identified to the species level using Wallersterin Laboratory nutrient (WLN) agar followed by analysis of the 26S rDNA D1/D2 domain. Genetic characteristics of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains were assessed by a rapid PCR-based method, relying on the amplification of interdelta sequences. A total of 412 yeast colonies were obtained from all fermentations and eight different WL morphotypes were observed. Non-Saccharomyces yeast mainly appeared in the grape must and at the early stages of wine fermentation. S. cerevisiae was the dominant yeast species using both fermentation techniques. Seven distinguishing interdelta sequence patterns were found among S. cerevisiae strains, and the inoculated commercial starter, AWRI 796, dominated all stages in both direct inoculation and pied de cuve fermentations. This study revealed that S. cerevisiae was the dominant species and an inoculated starter could dominate fermentations with the pied de cuve method under controlled conditions.

Bamboo Charcoal/Quick-Dry/Metallic Elastic Knits: Manufacturing Techniques and Property Evaluations

        Jia-Horng Lin,Chih Hung He,Mong-Chuan Lee,Yueh-Sheng Chen,Ching-Wen Lou 한국섬유공학회 2019 Fibers and polymers Vol.20 No.7

Protective clothing with electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMSE) is a functional textile, which shieldselectromagnetic waves to protect the human body from the far infrared rays. Traditional EMSE garments primarily usemetallic plates for reflecting electromagnetic interference (EMI). However, they also have disadvantages of a heavy weight, easy corrosion, and high production cost. In this study, three different functional yarns are combined, during which the twistnumber of metallic wires is changed for a better shielding effect. A crochet machine is used to fabricate functional elasticknits with the metallic composite yarns as the warp- and weft-inlaid yarns. The test results show that double (D) functionalelastic knits exhibit EMSE of above 20 dB when the EMI are between 1.0 and 3.0 GHz. In addition, the knit structure canimprove breaking tensile strength by 170 % and increases bursting strength by 58 %, but undermines the tear strength by10 %. Although changing twist number of metallic composite yarns does not affect water absorption rate along the weftdirection, it helps increasing elastic recovery rate by 3.1 %, water absorption rate along the warp direction by 106 %, farinfraredemissivity by 2.3 %, water vapor transmission rate by 20 %, and air permeability by 6 %.

Numerical investigation on the wave interferences of submerged bodies operating near the free surface

        Li Dong,Yang Qun,Zhai Lin,Wang Zhen,He Chuan-lin 대한조선학회 2021 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.13 No.1

A key factor that governs the wave interferences of a submerged body is the dimensionless Froude number. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to describe the resistance force coefficients and the generated waves of two SUBOFF submarine models. Grid independence studies are performed on two cases, totally and shallowly submerged cases, with four sets of computing meshes. The highest peaks are marked by red points at given wavelengths, a line is fitted to those points with a least-squares approximation, and the half wake angle at multiple Froude numbers is defined between the fitted line and the centerline of the free surface. The results show that when the depth of the target is 1.1D, constructive interferences occur at Fn ¼ 0.3 and 0.5, while destructive interference occurs at Fn ¼ 0.35 with distortion of the waveform. The half wake angle is less than 19.47 because of the interference between the bow and stern wave systems.

      • Quality of Life and Radiotherapy Complications of Chinese Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patients at Different 3DCRT Stages

        Gu, Mo-Fa,Su, Yong,Chen, Xin-Lin,He, Wei-Ling,He, Zhen-Yu,Li, Jian-Jun,Chen, Miao-Qiu,Mo, Chuan-Wei,Xu, Qian,Diao, Yuan-Ming Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.1

Purpose: the study aimed to compare the quality of life (QOL) and radiotherapy complications among Chinese nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients at different 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) stages adjusting for other variables. Methods: 511 NPC patients at different 3DCRT stages were enrolled. They were interviewed regarding SF-36, complications and socio-demographic variables and cancer- or treatment-related variables. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) based on SF-36, complications scores as dependent variables, 3DCRT stages as independent variables, and other variables as covariate were established. Results: The influencing factors of PCS included 3DCRT stages and age group. The influencing factors of MCS included 3DCRT stages and income. Most QOL scores of NPC patients were significantly associated with 3DCRT stage, after accounting for other variables. QOL scores of the patients receiving 3DCRT were the lowest, QOL scores of people after 3DCRT gradually increased. PCS scores of people greater than 5 years after 3DCRT was improved to or even better than the level before 3DCRT. The complications with significantly different scores of patients at different 3DCRT status included xerostomia, throat ache, hypogeusia, caries, hearing loss, snuffles. Conclusions: Clinicians should pay more attention to older NPC patients and patients with lower income. When patients receive 3DCRT, measures should be taken to reduce radiation injury to improve the patients' QOL.
