        Changes in smile index after correction of deep nasolabial fold using a combination of polydioxanone thread and hyaluronic acid filler

        Background: Filler injections are commonly used to soften deep nasolabial folds (NLF) by restoring volume in the depressed parts of fold. Recently, a combination technique using hyaluronic acid filler and polydioxanone (PDO) thread significantly improves deep NLF and induced changes in smile. Objective: This study retrospectively confirmed the effects of this combination therapy, focusing on smile changes. Methods: The NLF was divided into 3 parts: the lateral folded part (LFP), medial depressed part (MDP), and central creased part (CCP). Between November and December 2021, 14 patients underwent the combination treatment; of these, 11 were enrolled, excluding 3 who were not properly followed up. On average, 5.82±0.87 (right) and 5.73±0.47 (left) PDO mesh threads (6.0 cm length) were sequentially inserted into the LFP, MDP, and under the CCP of each NLF. Following this, an average of 1.82±0.71 ml (right) and 1.92±0.75 ml (left) of the filler was also sequentially injected into each NLF in a similar manner. They were mainly placed in the superficial and deep fat layers in the entire NLF and sub-malar areas. Smile index was measured during the fully expanded smile stage. The follow-up period was 3 months. The results were estimated using pre- and post-operative photographs. Results: Three months after the combination treatment, patients were pleased with the softening of their NLF. As indicated by the increased smile index (inter-commissural width/inter-labial gap), the old and expanded smile changed to younger and less expanded smile. The original smile type (eight and three patients with the commissure and cuspid types, respectively) remained unchanged. The contour changes in each smile varied according to the smile type. This could be explained by combination treatment’s NLF correction, which restricts facial expression muscle movement. Conclusion: These results demonstrate definite evidence of softening of the NLF, a youthful smile, and an increased smile index.

        Hydrogen Bond-Enabled Heterolytic and Homolytic Peroxide Activation within Nonheme Copper(II)-Alkylperoxo Complexes

        <P>To explore the reactivity of copper-alkylperoxo species enabled by the heterolytic peroxide activation, room-temperature stable mononuclear nonheme copper(II)-alkylperoxo complexes bearing a <I>N</I>-(2-ethoxyethanol)-<I>bis</I>(2-picolyl)amine ligand (HN<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>), [Cu<SUP>II</SUP>(OOR)(HN<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>)]<SUP>+</SUP> (R = cumyl or <SUP><I>t</I></SUP>Bu), were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. A combined experimental and computational investigation on the reactivity and reaction mechanisms in the phosphorus oxidation, C-H bond activation, and aldehyde deformylation reactions by the copper(II)-alkylperoxo complexes has been conducted. DFT-optimized structures suggested that a hydrogen bonding interaction exists between the ethoxyethanol backbone of the HN<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> ligand and either the proximal or distal oxygen atom of the alkylperoxide moiety, and this interaction consequently results in the enhanced stability of the copper(II)-alkylperoxo species. In the phosphorus oxidation reaction, both experimental and computational results indicated that a phosphine-triggered heterolytic O-O bond cleavage occurred to yield phosphine oxide and alcohol products. DFT calculations suggested that (i) the H-bonding between the ethoxyethanol backbone and distal oxygen of the alkylperoxide moiety and (ii) the phosphine binding to the proximal oxygen of the alkylperoxide moiety engendered the heterolytic peroxide activation. In the C-H bond activation reactions, temperature-dependent reactivity of the copper(II)-alkylperoxo complexes was observed, and a relatively strong activation energy of 95 kcal mol<SUP>-1</SUP> was required to promote the homolytic peroxide activation. A rate-limiting hydrogen atom abstraction reaction of xanthene by the putative copper(II)-oxyl radical resulted in the formation of the dimeric copper product and the substrate radical that further underwent autocatalytic oxidation reactions to form an oxygen incorporated product. Finally, amphoteric reactivity of copper(II)-alkylperoxo complexes has been assessed by conducting kinetic studies and product analysis of the aldehyde deformylation reaction.</P><P>A hydrogen-bonding interaction between the ligand and alkylperoxo ligand within mononuclear nonheme copper(II)−alkylperoxo complexes provides stability and unusual amphoteric reactivity in the phosphorus oxidation and aldehyde deformylation along with C−H bond activation reactions</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • Flavobacterium antarcticum sp. nov., a novel psychrotolerant bacterium isolated from the Antarctic

        <P>A yellow-pigmented, Gram-negative and aerobic bacterial strain, designated AT1026<SUP>T</SUP>, was isolated from a terrestrial sample from the Antarctic. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the Antarctic isolate belonged to the genus <I>Flavobacterium</I>, with the highest sequence similarity to <I>Flavobacterium tegetincola</I> (96·4 %). Cells were non-motile, non-gliding and psychrotolerant, with optimum and maximum temperatures of about 20 and 25 °C. Flexirubins were absent. The major isoprenoid quinone (MK-6), predominant cellular fatty acids (iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0 and a mixture of C16 : 1<I>ω</I>7<I>c</I> and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) and DNA G+C content (38 mol%) of the Antarctic isolate were consistent with those of the genus <I>Flavobacterium</I>. In contrast, several phenotypic characters can be used to differentiate this isolate from other flavobacteria. The polyphasic data presented in this study indicated that this isolate should be classified as a novel species in the genus <I>Flavobacterium</I>. The name <I>Flavobacterium antarcticum</I> sp. nov. is therefore proposed for the Antarctic isolate; the type strain is AT1026<SUP>T</SUP> (=IMSNU 14042<SUP>T</SUP>=KCTC 12222<SUP>T</SUP>=JCM 12383<SUP>T</SUP>).</P>

      • 아두이노와 블루투스 기반의 펌프모터 제어를 통한 음료 혼합 시스템의 개발

        본 논문에서는 아두이노와 블루투스를 이용하여 워터펌프모터를 제어하고 음료가 섞이는 칵테 일 머신을 개발하였다. 칵테일 머신의 주요 기능은 1) 안드로이드 기반 OS 와 아두이노에 연결된 블루투스 모듈 간의 통신을 통해 음료를 주문하고, 2) 각 워터펌프 모터들의 수동 캘리브레이션 작업을 통해 정밀한 음료량을 제어하며, 3) 레시피에 선택된 음료들 간의 배합을 통해 칵테일을 주조하는 것이다. 이를 위해 펌프모터 제어를 통해 음료 혼합 시스템을 개발하기 위해 개별 모터와 사용 되는 액체의 점도에 따른 유량의 차이를 실험을 통해 획득함으로써 칵테일을 구성하는 주요 요소인 배합비율을 맞추는 기능을 구현하였다.

        Copper oxides have been widely used in various applications including photo-catalysts, antifouling paint, p-type semiconductor, and artificial coloring. Graphene is a well-known supporting material due to its large surface area, high chemical stability, and excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. In this study, we have synthesized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) supported metallic Cu/rGO, Cu<sub>2</sub>O/rGO, and CuO/rGO nanocomposites by a impregnation of copper-precursor (Cu(NO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>3H<sub>2</sub>O) on GO followed by controlling gas environment during thermal treatments. The morphological and chemical structures of the as-prepared copper oxide nanocomposites were characterized using XRD, XPS, TEM, and their catalytic performance in photocatalytic degradation of dye molecules have been investigated. It has been found that CuO/rGO showed the excellent photocatalytic efficiency and recyclability without significant loss of activity in the photo-catalytic activity compared with Cu/rGO and Cu<sub>2</sub>O/rGO.

        <P>The novel natural product acremostrictin (1) was isolated from the culture broth of Acremonium strictum, a marine fungus collected from a Choristida sponge off the coast of Korea. Structurally, acremostrictin is a tricyclic lactone of an unprecedented skeletal class based on combined spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic analyses. The new compound exhibited weak antibacterial and moderate antioxidant activities.</P>

        Stance Markers in Expert versus Novice English Academic Writing in Applied Linguistics

        Stance, as a category of metadiscourse, involves a writer-oriented dimension in which writers express a textual voice to convey their judgments and commitments to potential readers. The present study investigates the use of stance markers in English academic writing with a focus on the degrees of academic expertise. The study has compiled two corpora, one consisting of novice writing (i.e., master’s theses written by Korean graduate students) and the other consisting of expert writing (i.e., published research articles) drawn from the discipline of applied linguistics, and has analyzed both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of stance practices within these corpora. The quantitative findings indicated that Korean novice writers employed significantly fewer stance markers than expert writers. The two groups of writers also made different choices in the employment of stance devices in different sections of research articles. Meanwhile, the qualitative analysis revealed that Korean novice writers often used inappropriate combinations of hedges and boosters, thereby failing to make an effective appeal to readers about their arguments. In addition, self-mentions were used differently by novice and expert writers, with only the latter group exploiting this category to maximize the perceived significance of their own research in the academic field. These findings are discussed in terms of pedagogical implications for EAP writing.

        Three-dimensional pelvis computed tomography-assisted Taylor approach for spinal anesthesia in hip arthroplasty: a retrospective study

        Background: Needle insertion for spinal anesthesia using the Taylor approach is challenging as the L5-S1 space is difficult to locate from the surface anatomy. In this study, we suggest the use of three-dimensional (3D) pelvis computed tomography (CT) to assist anesthesiologists in locating the needle insertion point. By comparing the success rate of 3D pelvis CT-assisted Taylor approach to that of other approaches in the existing literatures, we suggest this technique as an alternative method for subarachnoid block in the L5-S1 space.Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we reviewed the records of hip arthroplasty using the 3D pelvis CT-assisted Taylor approach. An imaginary guidance line was created from the intersection point of the midline and intercristal line on the posterior view of the 3D pelvis CT to the ideal skin insertion point for Taylor approach. The primary outcome was the success rate. The secondary outcomes included the angle between the intercristal line and the guidance line, and the length of the guidance line and the distance between the ideal needle insertion point and the L5-S1 space.Results: We reviewed the records of the 276 patients who underwent hip arthroplasty using 3D CT-assisted Taylor approach. In this cohort, the 3D CT-assisted Taylor approach in L5-S1 subarachnoid block failed in only 25/276 patients. The success rate of 3D CT-assisted Taylor approach was 90.9%. Conclusions: A 3D pelvis CT-assisted Taylor approach of spinal anesthesia can be an alternative method for subarachnoid block in the L5-S1 space with an acceptable success rate.
