<P>The specificity of proteases for the residues in and length of substrates is key to understanding their regulatory mechanism, but little is known about length selectivity. Crystal structure analyses of the bacterial aminopeptidase PepS, combined with functional and single-molecule FRET assays, have elucidated a molecular basis for length selectivity. PepS exists in open and closed conformations. Substrates can access the binding hole in the open conformation, but catalytic competency is only achieved in the closed conformation by formation of the S1 binding pocket and proximal movement of Glu343, a general base, to the cleavage site. Hence, peptides longer than the depth of the binding hole block the transition from the open to the closed conformation, and thus length selection is a prerequisite for catalytic activation. A triple-sieve interlock mechanism is proposed featuring the coupling of length selectivity with residue specificity and active-site positioning.</P>
속쓰림을 호소하는 환자에서 위식도역류질환의 빈도 및 주석산 시사프리드의 효과에 대한 연구

Backround/Aims: It has been thought that in many of those who complain of "epigastric soreness," their symptom is actually "heartburn" secondary to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This study was undertaken to determine the incidence of GERD in patients who complain of epigastric soreness and to evaluate the effect of cisapride tartrate on their symptoms. Methods: A total 107 patients who visited tertiary referral hospitals and complained of epigastric soreness were enrolled. We evaluated their symptoms and performed esophagogastroduodenoscopies(EGD). In 53 of the 107 patients who showed a normal EGD, gastroesophageal reflux studies(24 hour ambulatory pH monitoring, Bernstein test, modified Bernstein test) were performed. Results: Of the 107 patients, 36 had organic gastroduodenal diseases, 18 had reflux esophagitis, and 53 showed a normal EGD finding. Of these 53 patients, the gastroesophageal reflux studies were normal in 23 patients and abnormal in 30. Forty eight(44.9%) of 107 patients showed reflux-associated epigastric soreness. There was no difference in demographic characteristics among reflux-associated, gastroduodenal, and functional epigastric soreness groups. Among clinical characteristics of the 3 groups, the only difference found was the time of the symptoms during a day. In the reflux-associated epigastric soreness group, the symptoms were more severe during daytime. After cisapride tartrate administration for 4 weeks, symptom scores of reflux-associated and functional epigastric soreness groups improved from 9.2±3.9 and 10.4±3.9 to 4.0±3.8 and 3.8±2.2, respectively. Conclusions: We found a great number of patients having GERD among those complaining of "epigastric soreness." Cisapride tartrate was effective in relieving epigastric soreness in reflux-associated and functional epigastric soreness groups.

최근 국내외에서는 ICT 기술의 발달로 인해 철도 인프라의 효율적 관리 및 안전성 향상에 적용하기 위한 다양한 형태의 과제와 연구가 활발히 진행 중이다. 현재 국내에서는 철도차량의 부품을 체계적으로 관리하여 차량 운용의 안전성 및 유지보수 효율성을 향상시키고자 RFID 시스템을 활용한 부품관리시스템을 개발 중에 있다. 본 논문에서는 RFID 시스템이 적용될 전동차의 부품관리시스템 구축을 위하여 특수한 운영환경에 있는 전동차 부품의 운용 및 유지보수 환경을 분석하여 RFID Hardware가 갖추어야 할 요구사항을 고찰하고자 한다. In order to efficiently manage and improve safety of railway infrastructure, many projects and research activities applied Information & Communication Technology have recently been processing. Currently, RFID system based parts management system is being developed to improve vehicle safety and maintenance efficiency in the country This Paper analyzes the condition of operation and maintenance for EMU under special surroundings and derives the requirements that RFID Hardware shall have.

N/A Background/Aims : This study was done to compare the effects of Omeprazole (OMD) 10 or 20 mg with Ranitidine(RAN) 300 mg on intragastric acidity and gastroesophageal reflux in healthy subjects. Methods : Ten healthy male volunteers were studied after administrations of 5 days dosing with either RAN 300 mg, OMD 10 mg or 20 mg, once each morning. On the 5th day, intragastric pH and lower esophageal pH were measured by a dual channel antimony pH catheter for 10 hours. Results : Gastroesophageal reflux was reduced after administrations of RAN 300 mg, OMD 10 mg or 20 mg (p<0.05) and there was no significant difference among the three drugs (p>0.05). The gastric holding time of pH >4 was significantly prolonged over fasting and postprandial periods after RAN 300 mg, OMD 10 mg or 20 mg administrations (p<0.05). OMD 20 mg showed the most potent effect on gastric acid suppression (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference between RAN 300 mg and OMD 10 mg (p>0.05). OMD administrations (10 mg or 20 mg) exhibited a more potent effect on gastric acid suppression during the postprandial period than RAN 300 mg (p<0.05). Conclusions : OMD 10 mg was as potent as RAN 300 mg on inhibition of gastric acid, but less potent than OMD 20 mg. There was no difference among the three drugs in regard to gastroesophageal reflux in healthy subjects.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NFLD) shows broad spectrum of disease entities such as steatosis (fatty liver), steatohepatitis and steatohepatitis with fibrosis. NFLD observed commonly in human liver biopsies, is mostly attributed to the obesity, diabetes or drugs. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), one entity of NFLD, is characterized by liver biopsy findings similar to those observed in alcoholic hepatitis without alcohol consumption. Although NASH is generally a benign disorder, it may be progressive, leading to cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. There is no doubt that macrovesicular steatosis is associated with the development of necroinflammation, fibrosis and cirrhosis. However, the pathogenesis of progression to advanced disease in NFLD is obscure. Recently, it has emerged that oxidative stress-lipid peroxidation, endotoxin-mediated cytokine release, and mitochondrial dysfunction play a role in the progression of NASH. We will discuss how these mechanisms might be involved in the progression from steatosis to advanced NFLD. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2001;38:1-8)

The achievement of high gas permeability is a key factor in the development of porous SiC ceramics for applications of hot gas filter, vacuum chuck, and air spindle. However, few reports on the gas permeability of porous SiC ceramics can be found in the literature. In this paper, porous SiC ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from $1600^{\circ}C$ to $1800^{\circ}C$ using the mixing powders of SiC, silicon, carbon and boron as starting materials. In some samples, expanded hollow microspheres as a pore former were used to make a cellular pore structure. It was possible to produce Si bonded SiC ceramics with porosities ranging from 42% to 55%. The maximum bending strength was 58MPa for the carbon content of 0.2 wt% and sintering temperature of $1700^{\circ}C$. The increase of air permeability was accelerated by addition of hollow microsphere as a pore former.

Frit 함량이 다공질 Frit-Bonded 알루미나 세라믹스의 미세조직과 꺾임강도에 미치는 영향

Porous frit-bonded alumina ceramics were fabricated using alumina and frit as raw materials. The effects of frit content and sintering temperature on microstructure, porosity, and flexural strength were investigated at low temperature of $750{\sim}850^{\circ}C$. Increased addition of frit content or higher sintering temperature resulted in improved flexural strength of porous frit-bonded alumina ceramics. It was possible to produce frit-bonded alumina ceramics with porosities ranging from 35% to 40%. A maximum strength of 52MPa was obtained at a porosity of ~38% when 90 wt% alumina and 10 wt% frit powders were used.
