<P>Hydroquinone (HQ), a major benzene metabolite, occurs naturally in various plants and is manufactured for commercial use. Although HQ displays various biological effects, its neuroprotective effects following ischemic insults have not been investigated. In this study, we first examined neuroprotective effects of HQ in a rat model of transient focal cerebral ischemia. Animals were subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion for 120 min. HQ (50 or 100 mg/kg) or vehicle was intraperitoneally administered once at 30 min after ischemia-reperfusion. Neuroprotection by treatment with 100 mg/kg of HQ was shown using evaluation of neurological deficits, positron-emission tomography (PET) and 2,3,5triphenyltetrazoliumchloride (TTC) staining. In addition, HQ treatment significantly attenuated ischemia-induced Evans blue dye extravasation from blood vessels and significantly increased immunoreactivities of SMI-71 (an endothelial BBB marker) and glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1, an endothelial cell marker) in ischemic cortex compared to the vehicle-treated ischemia-operated group. Confocal microscopy and western blot analysis also showed that HQ treatment maintained expressions of tight junction proteins (zonula occludens-1 and occludin) in the ischemic cortex. Post-treatment with HQ protected neurons from transient focal cerebral ischemic injury and the neuroprotective effect of HQ might be closely associated with prevention of BBB disruption via maintaining SMI-71 and GLUT-1 expressions as well as prevention of the degradation of zonula occludens-1 and occludin proteins.</P>

<P>Ribosomal protein S3 (rpS3), a multi-functional protein, has been known to participate in DNA repair mechanism. In this study, we investigated changes in rpS3 immunoreactivity and its protein levels in the sub-regions of the gerbil hippocampus following subacute and chronic restraint stress. Serum corticosterone levels were increased in both the subacute and chronic-stress-groups compared to the control-group: the level in the subacute-stress-group was much higher than that in the chronic-stress-group. We could not find any neuronal damage in all the sub-regions of the hippocampus after both the subacute and chronic restraint stress. In the subacute-stress-group, rps3 immunoreactivity was not different compared to the control-group. However, rps3 immunoreactivity in the chronic-stress-group was decreased compared to the subacute-stress-group: especially, the immunoreactivity was markedly decreased in the pyramidal cells of the hippocampus proper (CA1-CA3 region) and granule cells of the dentate gyrus. In addition, western blot analysis also showed that rpS3 protein levels in the chronic-stress-group were significantly decreased compared to those in the subacute-stress-group. These findings indicate that chronic stress, not subacute stress, can decrease rpS3 immunoreactivity.</P>

주로 방범용으로 사용하는 폐쇄회로 TV(CCTV : Closed Circuit Television)는 범죄 발생 시 범인 검거와 증거 확보에 유용하게 사용된다. 하지만 CCTV는 지형지물로 인해 영상 확보가 어려운 영역, 즉 사각지대가 존재하는 문제점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이를 해결하기 위해 증강현실(AR : Augmented Reality)을 이용하여 CCTV 카메라의 방향을 주기적으로 변경한다. 변경된 카메라의 방향에서 확보한 영상으로, 기존 CCTV와 달리 보다 넓은 반경의 영상을 확보하여, 모니터링할 수 있는 장점이 있다.
정칙 이진 행렬을 이용한 메타 유전 알고리즘 설계 방안

본 논문에서는 정칙 이진 행렬을 이용하여 유전 알고리즘의 성능을 개선할 수 있는 메타 유전 알고리즘을 설계한다. 정칙 이진 행렬은 유전 알고리즘에서 사용되는 이진 인코딩에서의 기저 변환에 중요하게 쓰일 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 정칙 이진 행렬의 기저 변화를 위한 아이디어와 더불어 정칙 이진 행렬의 표현과 재조합 연산에 대한 아이디어를 제시했던 연구들을 소개하고, 메타 유전 알고리즘을 위한 변이와 초기 해집단 생성, 평가에 대한 방법론을 제시한다.

지구 온난화로 인해 우리나라의 연평균 기온이 꾸준히 오르면서 기후 변화가 심해진 최근에는 계절을 기간으로 구분하는 것은 무의미해졌다. 본 논문에서는 서울과 부산 두 지역에 대해 기온 정보를 이용하여 날짜별로 계절을 분류해 보았다. 현재 가장 많이 쓰이는 분류기인 SVM(Support Vector Machine)을 사용하였으며 각기 다른 3가지 커널 함수를 사용해 결과를 비교해 보았다. 기간으로 계절을 분류한 방식과 3가지 커널 함수를 이용한 계절 분류 방식을 비교 분석한 결과 SVM으로 분류한 내용이 기간 분류에 비해 10% 이상 좋은 결과를 보였다.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to confirm the effect of various forms of walking on health related physical fitness, lumbar muscle strength, range of motion and the pain index. Method: Forty females were divided into 4 groups: walking forward (n=10), walking backward (n=10), walking forward & backward (n=10), and control group (n=10). All participants in walking groups walked 50 min/day and 3 days/week during 10 weeks. Walking forward group walked at the intensity of 50-60 %HRmax during 1-5 weeks and 60-70 %HRmax 6-10 weeks. Walking backward group walked at the intensity of 11-12 RPE during 1-5 weeks and 13-14 RPE during 6-10 weeks. And walking forward & backward group followed the combined protocol from two groups in the order of walking forward followed by backward during 1-5 weeks and the other way during 6-10 weeks. Result: While muscle mass significantly increased, weight, fat%, and WHR decreased in all walking groups (p<.05). And there were no significant differences among walking groups. Flexibility, agility, power, and cardiorespiratory endurance were significantly improved in all walking groups (p<.05) with the significant difference in balance of all walking groups compared to control group (p<.01). Sit-ups (p<.01) and back muscle strength (p<.05) significantly increased in all walking groups with no significant difference among walking groups. ROM of lumbar flexion, lumbar extension, and knee flexion significantly increased in all walking groups (p<.01). Visual analogue score (p<.05) and verbal rating score (p<.01) significantly increased in all walking groups. And walking backward group showed the highest score in both of measures (p<.05). Conclusion: Based on the results as shown, walking forward, walking backward, and walking forward & backward caused significant changes in health related physical fitness, lumbar muscle strength, ROM and pain. Especially the group of walking backward showed low figures in pain. In conclusion, various forms of walking not only have positive effects on body composition but also beef up muscular strength for lumbar extension, which improves the scope of exercise in lumbar region and the knee joint, and helps prevention or reduction of lumbar pain by relieving pain.

We have previously shown that the larvae of swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus, exhibit substantial antibacterial activity in the hemolymph, upon challenging with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Here we report the isolation and molecular characterization of several immune inducible genes that are specifically expressed by employing annealing control primer (ACP)-based GeneFishing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from P. xuthus the larva. Using 120 arbitrary ACPs, we identified 24 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that are up-regulated in response to injected LPS. Sequence analysis showed that 18 DEGs revelaed a high sequence similarity to the previously characterized genes of other insects, although 6 DEGs showed no significant similarity to any known genes. Among these inducible transcripts we found 8 putative immune-related genes including cecropin and attacin. Finally, we analysed the expression profiles of potential immune-related genes by RT-PCR and found all of them were considerably increased in the mRNA levels by LPS injection.
