<P>The effect of nonthermal ultraviolet-C light in a Teflon-coil (UV-C, fixed at 2.5 J/mL) and subsequent high hydrostatic pressure (HHP at 400-500 MPa at 25C for 1 min) combined treatment was evaluated in dongchimi juice during 5-day storage at room temperature. A helically wound Teflon-coil reactor was used for UV-C radiation to create a secondary eddy flow. Results showed that lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in dongchimi juice were more resistant to UV-C and HHP alone treatments. On the other hand, UV-HHP combined treatment resulted in greater reduction of LAB viable counts and also inhibited bacterial growth during room temperature storage and maintained the chemical quality of dongchimi juice via synergistic effect. Sensory analysis showed that nonthermal treatments effectively maintained the taste and flavor of dongchimi juice during room temperature storage than untreated and heat pasteurized samples. In conclusion, UV-HHP combined treatment offers an opportunity for marketing of dongchimi juice product at room temperature with characteristic quality.</P>

This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of the swine liquid manure separated its slurry on the dry matter yield, botanical composition and soil characteristics at pasture. The results obtained at National Livestock Research Institute(RDA), in Suwon from 1994 to 1997 are summarized as follows; The dry matter yields of swine slurry nitrogen 100%(T3), 75%(T4) and 50%(T5) were showed 94%, 91% and 75% of chemical fertilizer(T2)'s yield, respectively. and it was not significant difference between the yield of chemical fertilizer(T2) and swine liquid manure(50%)+chemical fertilizer(50%). According to application of swine liquid manure, the weed ratios of its plots were lowed by increasing its coverage and grasses. We conclude that the application of swine liquid manure(50%)+chemical fertilizer(50%) can be applied on grassland without adverse effect on dry matter production, quality of herbage, soil chemical properties.

The Korean Peninsula is located in the intraplate regime of the Eurasian plate, and numerous historical and instrumental earthquakes have been recorded. Among these, the largest earthquakes were recorded in and around the Gyeongju and Ulsan areas in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. We recently reexamined faults in Jinhyun and Jintee, part of the Ulsan fault swarm, to clarify the average slip rate and the maximum potential magnitude of future earthquakes. The Jinhyun fault extends to the Tabgol fault (J-T fault), and the Jintee fault extends to the Singye (S-J fault). The faults cut through alluvial fans and are covered by unconsolidated granite washes on Tertiary granite. All of these faults show reverse sense of motion such that the Tertiary granite has been moved upward with a high angle relative to the Quaternary sediments. Most sediment samples from the Jinhyun and Jintee faults showed quartz OSL ages of ca. 40-60 ka. The calculated vertical slip rate for the Jinhyun and Jintee faults is in the range of 0.18-0.28 mm/y. Based on maximum earthquake magnitudes calculated from geological survey results as well as historical and instrumental earthquake information, the maximum potential magnitudes of future earthquakes in the Gyeongju area are estimated to range from 4.6 to 5.6. This suggests that the potential maximum magnitude in the southern Korean Peninsula is presumably not more than 6.

<B>Summary</B><P>In this study we have investigated the efficiency of <I>in vitro</I> maturation (IVM) as a basic way to study the development of canine oocytes after <I>in vitro</I> fertilization (IVF). We decided, therefore, to perform two-part experiments. Firstly, experiment I compared the effects of TCM199 without fetal bovine serum (FBS) with TCM199 supplemented with 5% FBS on the <I>in vitro</I> nuclear maturation rate of canine oocytes. For the efficiency of meiotic development to the metaphase II (MII) stage, we found that 4.7% (4/64) of all oocytes grown in TCM199 without FBS developed to the MII stage compared with only 1.7% (1/59) of those grown in TCM199 with 5% FBS for 48 h. Therefore, FBS did not increase <I>in vitro</I> nuclear maturation. In experiment II, the cleavage rate of canine oocytes used for IVF was investigated following heparin treatment. Canine oocytes were fertilized in four groups: Fert-TALP medium without heparin (Fert I) or Fert-TALP medium supplemented with 10, 20 or 30 µg/ml heparin (Fert II, Fert III, Fert IV, respectively). Oocytes that were grown for 24 h in Fert I following fertilization showed the highest rate of all of the groups, 6.5% (5/77) and developed to the early morula stage. Markedly, the oocytes cultured in Fert I for 24 h following insemination had a higher rate of embryonic development than other groups. We can assert that, unlike findings in other mammals, heparin treatment in canine IVF does not increase the efficiency of the fertilization rate and is therefore not an important factor.</P>

As the demand for saving energies has been getting higher all over the world the development for high-voltage and high capacity inverters has been achieved to reduce energy by controling the consumption patterns of industrial electric equipments. H-Bridge Multi-Level high-voltage inverter being researched is the single phase H-Bridge inverter by using low-voltage power semiconductor devices. It can make high-voltages close to a sine wave by connecting composed cells on series. This is a topology without filters because of the low input and output harmonic, and usages of it have been expanded in metal, oil, natural gas and electricity generation industries. The optimal operation conditions on these kinds of high-voltage inverters are varied by running environment conditions, and the performance tests for thermal stability of inner electric semiconductors changes are partially impossible because of facilities. In this research, the junction temperature of power electronics devices, distribution of surface temperature on heat sink and inner temperature and velocity of cells and systems have been drawn as the results by using ANSYS ICEPAK specialized in CFD simulation of power electronics equipments to secure the thermal reliability of cells and systems for 1500kW high-voltage inverters. Through these outcomes the ventilation structures and an effective arrangement of heat components of cell-based inverters could be applied to the plan for a uniform flow distribution of a high-voltage inverter system. Moreover, the consistency of thermal-flow simulation was proven by comparison of actual temperature through the cell-based performance tests.

Twelve metabolites, including five highly oxygenated azaphilones, geumsanols A-E, along with seven known analogues were isolated from Penicillium sp. KCB11A109, a fungus derived from a ginseng field. Their structures were assigned by spectroscopic means (NMR and MS), and stereochemistries were determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses (<SUP>1</SUP>H-<SUP>1</SUP>H coupling constants, NOESY, and HETLOC) and chemical derivatizations (modified Mosher's method and acetonide formation). The isolates were evaluated for their anticancer, antimicrobial, antimalarial activities, and phenotypic effects in zebrafish development. Of these compounds possessing no pyranoquinone core, only geumsanol E exhibited cytotoxic activities and toxic effects on zebrafish embryos, suggesting that a double bond at C-11 and C-12 is important for biological activity.

<P>Despite the accumulated evidence showing the significant association between hypertension and obesity, it remains unclear how metabolic healthy status of obesity have an impact on the development of hypertension. Thus, this study was to investigate the risk of hypertension according to the metabolic healthy status stratified by the degree of obesity. A cohort of 25,442 Korean men without hypertension at baseline was followed-up from 2005 to 2010. They were divided into the following 6 phenotypes according to their baseline metabolic health and obesity status: metabolically healthy normal weight (MH-NW), metabolically healthy overweight (MH-OW), metabolically healthy obese (MHO), metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MU-NW), metabolically unhealthy overweight (MU-OW), and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO). Cox proportional hazard model was used to evaluate the risk for hypertension according to the metabolically healthy status stratified by degree of obesity. During 91,256.4 person-years of follow-up, 4633 participants (18.2%) developed hypertension. Th6 adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for hypertension in MH-OW, MHO, MU-NW, MU-OW, and MUO phenotypes compared with MH-NW phenotype were 1.13 (1.04-1.23), 1.43 (1.15-1.69), 1.17 (1.02-1.34), 1.49 (1.27-1.72), and 1.54 (1.36-1.88), respectively. The interaction between metabolically healthy status and degree of obesity was not significant (P for interaction =.29). Compared with MH-NW, both the obese phenotype and metabolically unhealthy phenotype independently had an increased risk for hypertension. These results imply that both metabolic health status and obesity status play important roles independently in the risk of hypertension in Korean men. (C) American Society of Hypertension.
