        Surveillance of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns among Shigella Species Isolated in China during the 7-Year Period of 2005-2011

        Background: Shigella is a frequent cause of bacterial dysentery in the developing world. Treatment with antibiotics is recommended for shigellosis, but the options are limited due to globally emerging resistance. This study was conducted to determine the frequency and pattern of antimicrobial susceptibility of Shigella in China. Methods: We studied the antimicrobial resistance profiles of 308 Shigella spp. strains (260S. flexneri, 40 S. sonnei, 5 S. boydii, and 3 S. dysenteriae) isolated from fecal samples of patients (age, from 3 months to 92 yr) presenting with diarrhea in different districts of Anhui,China. The antimicrobial resistance of strains was determined by the agar dilution method according to the CSLI guidelines. Results: The most common serogroup in the Shigella isolates was S. flexneri (n=260, 84.4%),followed by S. sonnei (n=40, 13.0%). The highest resistance rate was found for nalidixic acid (96.4%), followed by ampicillin (93.2%), tetracycline (90.9%), and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (80.8%). Among the isolates tested, 280 (91.0%) were multidrug resistant (resistant to ≥2 agents). The most common resistance pattern was the combination of ampicillin,tetracycline, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (70.8%). Resistance to ampicillin and tetracycline were more common among S. flexneri than among S. sonnei isolates. Conclusions: S. flexneri is predominant in Anhui, China, and its higher antimicrobial resistance rate compared with that of S. sonnei is a cause for concern. Continuous monitoring of resistance patterns is necessary to control the spread of resistance in Shigella. The recommendations for antimicrobial treatment must be updated regularly based on surveillance results.

        Sir, Serratia marcescens , once considered to be an innocuous and non-pathogenic organism, is now an important cause of hospital- acquired infections. This organism is associated with respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, septicemia, meningitis, and wound infections [1, 2]. S. marcescens infections are difficult to treat because of high resistance to a wide variety of antibiotics, including cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, and aztreonam [2].

        Underlying mechanisms of phosphodiesterase 10A and glutamate-ammonia ligase genes that regulate inosine monophosphate deposition and thereby affect muscle tenderness in Jingyuan chickens

        Objective: Inosine monophosphate (IMP) is a key factor that imparts of meat flavor. Differences in the IMP content in the muscles were evaluated to improve chicken meat quality. Methods: For this study, the IMP content was detected by high performance liquid chromatography. The gene expression profiles of Jingyuan chickens with different feeding patterns and different sexes were analyzed by RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq). Results: Breast muscle IMP content in free-range chickens was extremely significantly higher than that of caged chickens (p<0.01). Breast muscle IMP content in hens was also higher than that of cocks, but the difference was not significant. Correlation analysis showed that the breast muscle IMP content in caged hens and cocks was negatively correlated with the shear force, and the breast muscle IMP content in free-range hens was significantly negatively correlated with the shear force (p<0.05). The two key genes associated with IMP synthesis in chickens with different feeding patterns were glutamate-ammonia ligase (GLUL) and phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A). Bioinformatics analysis revealed that the GLUL and PDE10A genes are involved in glutamine biosynthesis and purine salvage pathways respectively. In addition, GLUL expression was positively correlated with the IMP content in caged and free-range chickens, and PDE10A expression was significantly positively correlated with the IMP content in caged and free-range chickens (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings will facilitate the comprehension of the deposition of IMP in the muscles and thereby aid the process of selection and breeding of good quality local chickens.

        Fractional order complementary non-singular terminal sliding mode control of PMSM based on neural network

        Aiming at the sensitivity problems of uncertain factors such as parameter variation, external disturbance and friction for thepermanent magnet synchronous motor control system of electric vehicle, a fractional order complementary non-singular terminalsliding mode control method based on neural network is proposed. The mathematical model of permanent magnet synchronousmotor with uncertain factors was established. The sliding mode controller was designed by combining the generalized slidingmode surface and the complementary sliding mode surface, which shortened the arrival time from the state trajectory to slidingmode surface. The fractional calculus operator with fi ltering characteristics was used to improve the position tracking accuracyand reduce the chattering. As for the variety of uncertain disturbances, the neural network was used to estimate the system totaluncertainty and compensate online to further improve the dynamic response ability and anti-interference ability. Finally, thesimulation results verify the eff ectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method, which can provide theoretical and technicalsupport for improving the control accuracy of permanent magnet synchronous motor and the development of electric vehicles.

        Environment-dependent Broadband Perfect Absorption of Metal-insulator-metal Metamaterial Systems

        Based on calculations using the macroscopic Maxwell’s equations with mesoscopic boundary conditions, light absorption by a layered metal-insulator-metal (MIM) metamaterial system embedded in three different environments is investigated. Increasing the top metal thickness shifts the broad absorption band to lower dielectric-constant regions and longer wavelengths, for either TM or TE waves. Boosting the dielectric-layer thickness redshifts the broadband absorption to regions of larger dielectric constant. In air, for the dielectric-constant range of 0.86–3.40, the absorption of the system exceeds 98% across680–1,033 nm. In seawater with optimized dielectric constant, ≥94% light absorption over 400–1,200nm can be achieved; particularly in the wavelength range of 480–960 nm and dielectric-constant range of 0.82–3.50, the absorption is greater than 98%. In an environment with even higher refractive index(1.74), ≥98% light absorption over 400–1,200 nm can be achieved, giving better performance. Theinfluence of angle of incidence on light absorption of the MIM system is also analyzed, and the angle tolerance for ≥90% broadband absorption of a TM wave is up to 40° in an environment with large re-fractive index. While the incident-angle dependence of the absorption of a TE wave is nearly the same for different circumstances, the situation is different for a TM wave.
