Objective : The objectives was to compare the measurement on skull lateral projection, skull posteroanterior projection, and lateral cephalogram in normal control group and Sleep-disordered breathing(SDB) group. Material and methods : A prospective study of 20 adult group with SDB and 24 normal control group was done. The skull lateral projection, skull posteroanterior projection, and lateral cephalometric indexes were measured to assess skeletal structures, dental structures, and velopharyngeal anatomic features. Results : The compromised radiographic parameters that may be found in patients with SDB include dental convexity, SPAS, minimum PAS, PNS-P, and minimum transverse diameter of posterior airway space. Conclusion : SDB is associated with structural changes in a number of radiologic mesurements. The analysis of the skull lateral projection and skull posteroanterior projection may provide some informations regarding the prediction of the SDB.

Mucormycosis: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Lee, Guem-Sug,Lee, Kyung-Hwa,Kim, Byung-Gook,Im, Yeong-Gwan Korean Academy of Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine 2014 Journal of Oral Medicine and Pain Vol.39 No.1

Mucormycosis is a rare but fatal fungal infection with low survival rate in immune-compromised patients. It is caused by a fungus belonging to the Mucoraceae family of the Zygomycetes class. Mucormycosis is classified as rhino-orbital-cerebral, pulmonary, cutaneous, gastrointestinal, disseminated, and miscellaneous types according to its clinical manifestations. Early diagnosis and treatment along with correction of the underlying medical condition is important for favorable results. This case presentation describes mucormycosis involving the anterior maxillary region in a leukemic patient with prolonged neutropenia. The patient benefited from a timely biopsy and immediate treatment with amphotericin B, and was successfully managed with an interdisciplinary team approach consisting of dental and several medical specialists.

Involvement of Antiapoptotic Signals in Rat PC12 Cells Proliferation by Cyclosporin A Treatment

        Park, Ji-Il,Lee, Guem-Sug,Jeong, Yeon-Jin,Kim, Byung-Kuk,Kim, Jae-Hyung,Lim, Hoi-Soon,Kim, Sun-Hun,Kim, Won-Jae,Jung, Ji-Yeon 대한구강생물학회 2007 International Journal of Oral Biology Vol.32 No.2

Cyclosporin A (CsA) plays an important role in clinical medicine and basic biology as an immunosuppressant and a mitochondrial permeability blocker, respectively. It was reported that CsA has a protective role by preventing apoptosis and promoting the proliferation in severed neurons. However, the molecular mechanisms for CsA-induced neuronal cell proliferation are unclear. In this study, we examined the mechanisms underlying the CsA-induced proliferation of PC12 cells. CsA increased the viability of PC12 cells in a dose (over 0.1~10 μM) -and time-dependent manner. The level of ROS generation was decreased in the CsA-treated PC12 cells. Expression of Bcl-2, an antiapoptotic molecule that inhibits the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria into the cytosol, was upregulated, whereas Bax, a proapototic molecule, was not changed in the CsA-treated PC12 cells. CsA downregulated the mRNA expression of VDAC 1 and VDAC 3, but VDAC 2 was not changed in the CsAtreated PC12 cells. The level of cytosolic cytochrome c released from the mitochondria and the caspase-3 activity were attenuated in the CsA-treated PC12 cells. These results suggest that the mitochondria-mediated apoptotic signal and Bcl-2 family may play an important role in CsA-induced proliferation in PC12 cells.

Involvement of Caspases and Bcl-2 Family in Nitric Oxide-Induced Apoptosis of Rat PC12 Cells

        Jeong, Yeon-Jin,Jung, Ji-Yeon,Lee, Jin-Ha,Cho, Jin-Hyoung,Lee, Guem-Sug,Kim, Sun-Hun,Kim, Won-Jae The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2006 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.10 No.6

This study was aimed to investigate the nitric oxide (NO)-induced cytotoxic mechanism in PC12 cells. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), an NO donor, decreased the viability of PC12 cells in dose-and time-dependent manners. SNP enhanced the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and gave rise to apoptotic morphological changes including cell shrinkage, chromatin condensation, and DNA fragmentation. Expression of Bax was not affected, whereas Bcl-2 was downregulated in SNP-treated PC12 cells. SNP augmented the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into cytosol and enhanced caspase -8, -9, and -3 activities. SNP upregulated both Fas and Fas-L, which are known to be components of death receptor assembly. These results suggest that NO induces apoptosis of PC12 cells through both mitochondria-and death receptor-mediated pathways mediated by ROS and Bcl-2 family.

        Johanson

2005 Journal of Oral Medicine and Pain Vol.30 No.2

Age estimation is fundamental and important in personal identification with forensic medicine and dentistry. Recently, a lot of studies using various part of the body have been done for age estimation. Age estimation with teeth is the most significant method comparing ones with other part of the body. Gustafson method and Johanson method using postmortem teeth have been authorized in accuracy and systemization and used domestically and internationally. The verification of the accuracy in above methods had been tried many times but it is still rare in Korea. Fifty-nine teeth(incisors, canine, premolars and molars) which were extracted due to periodontal diseases or orthodontic problem were collected. Present study is to 1) compare the accuracy of estimated age in applying Gustafson method and Johanson method to the teeth in Korea, 2) compare and analyze the correlation with results using Gustafson method and Johanson method by age, gender, maxilla - mandible and anterior - premolar - molar. Teeth were embedded in resin and sliced and then examined each one using Gustafson method and Johanson method. The results are as follows: 1. Actual age was a significant difference in estimated age by Johanson method. Actual age was a significant correlation in estimated age by Gustafson method and modified Johanson method. Modified Johanson method was more significant than Gustafson method. 2. In estimated age by Gustafson method, Johanson method and modified Johanson method, there was no significance with actual age by location and gender. 3. In estimated age by Gustafson method, Johanson method and modified Johanson method, there was significance with actual age by age group. Finally, Gustafson method and Johanson method can be used in Korea. To make more accurate verification, however, it needs more specimen and postmortem teeth. Johanson equation proposed by himself has to be developed by further studies.

Surface Electromyographic Characteristics of a Myofascial Trigger Point of the Temporalis Muscle: A Case Report

임영관,백혜성,이금숙,김병국,Im, Yeong-Gwan,Baek, Hey-Sung,Lee, Guem-Sug,Kim, Byung-Gook The Korean Academy of Orofacial Pain and Oral Medi 2013 Journal of Oral Medicine and Pain Vol.38 No.3

Myofascial pain is a condition associated with regional pain and muscle tenderness characterized by the presence of myofascial trigger points. In this case report, a subject complaining of nighttime bruxism was clinically assessed, and a latent trigger point of the anterior temporalis muscle was identified with manual palpation. A surface electromyographic (SEMG) exam of the anterior temporalis muscle harboring the latent trigger point demonstrated several SEMG features, including post-contraction irritability, delayed relaxation following contraction and accelerated muscle fatigue. It was concluded that a SEMG exam may detect abnormal masticatory muscle function and, therefore, assist in the evaluation of myogenous temporomandibular disorders.

        Hae-Soon Lim,Kyung-Yi Chung,Ae-Ok Kim,Mi-Ran Kim,Youn-Shin Kim,Mi-Sun Kang,Jeong-Won Hong,Ji-Yeon Jung,Ji-Il Park,Guem-Sug Lee KOREAN ACADAMY OF ORAL BIOLOGY 2014 International Journal of Oral Biology Vol.39 No.2

The purpose of this study is to evaluate salivary flow rate, salivary pH, and cariogenic activity using unstimulatedsaliva of the head and neck cancer patients. Twenty threecancer patients (19 males, 4 females) who had undergonechemotherapy and radiation therapy and twenty four healthyvolunteers (14 males, 10 females) as a control were included. Salivary flow rate, salivary pH, and cariogenic activity usingunstimulated saliva were examined. Compared to saliva ofthe control group, salivary flow rate (p<0.001) and salivarypH (p<0.001) were significantly lower in head and neckcancer patients. The colony counts of Lactobacilli was higherin head and neck cancer patients (p<0.05) than in controlgroup. These salivary factors and cariogenic activity canincrease the prevalence of dental caries in head and neckcancer patients.
