Biodiesel production from palm oil using a non-catalyzed supercritical process

The effects of free fatty acid (FFA) and moisture contents in palm oil, as well as working volume ratio on the production of biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters; FAMEs), were investigated using palm oil and a non-catalytic supercritical process. FAME content obtained using anhydrous palm oil was 95.8% during the non-catalytic supercritical process. FAME content produced with 15% moisture content and 15% FFA content was 94.4% and 95.1% respectively, which was similar to that of anhydrous palm oil with no FFA. The non-catalytic supercritical process was not affected by FFA or moisture content in oil. By increasing working volume ratio, reaction temperature decreased from 340 oC to 260 oC at the same pressure, whereas FAME content increased from 69.9% to 95.5%.

Levodopa or L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) is the precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine. L-DOPA is a famous treatment for Parkinson`s disease symptoms. In this study, electroenzymatic synthesis of L-DOPA was performed in a three-electrode cell, comprising a Ag/AgCl reference electrode, a platinum wire auxiliary electrode, and a glassy carbon working electrode. L-DOPA had an oxidation peak at 376 mV and a reduction peak at -550 mV. The optimum conditions of pH, temperature, and amount of free tyrosinase enzyme were pH 7, 30℃, and 250 IU, respectively. The kinetic constant of the free tyrosinase enzyme was found for both cresolase and catacholase activity to be 0.25 and 0.4 mM, respectively. A cyclic voltammogram was used to investigate the electron transfer rate constant. The mean heterogeneous electron transfer rate (ke) was 5.8 × 10-4 cm/s. The results suggest that the electroenzymatic method could be an alternative way to produce L-DOPA without the use of a reducing agent such as ascorbic acid.

Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant, renewable resource, but the structural and chemical complexity of biomass acts as a hindrance in its effective utilization for cellulosic ethanol production. Hence, effective pretreatment is always necessary to remove the surrounding matrix of lignin prior to the enzymatic hydrolysis. Pretreatment of rice straw by Pleurotus florida was found to be effective and resulted in 49% lignin degradation, whereas fungus along with grape leaves resulted in 99% lignin degradation. This method not only explores a pathway for utilizing the solid agro waste but also results in a value-added product of edible mushrooms that has proved to be the best pretreatment technology for ethanol production. FTIR and SEM analysis confirmed the structural transformation taking place during the pretreatment. The components of grape leaves were also analyzed using GC-MS.
