Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships among family support, self-care, and quality of life of patients with arthritis through a survey. That will be basic data to plan nursing intervention for promoting quality of life for patients with arthritis. Method : The convenient sample of this study consisted of 120 patients with arthritis and data were collected using questionnaires during August 2006 from two OPDs of rheumatoid centers in C University hospitals. The study instruments were used to measure Self Care (So, 1992), Family Support (Kang, 1984), and Quality of Life (Ro, 1988). The data were analyzed using ANOVA, Duncan test, and Pearson correlation. Result : The mean scores were 3.56 for family support, 4.16 for self-care, and 3.19 for quality of life. The level of self-care was significantly higher in those men, having an occupation, higher income, and living with family members. The level of family support was significantly higher in those men, having an occupation, living with family members, and having a helper. The level of quality of life was significantly higher for those men, having a higher income, and shorter length of illness. Three relationships were found to be positively correlated: 1) between the levels of family support and self-care (r=.53), 2) between the levels of self-care and quality of life (r=.55), and 3) between the levels of family support and quality of life (r=.54). Conclusion: Therefore, a nursing intervention program needs to be developed to promote family support, and self-care for quality of life for patients with arthritis.
CD103+ Cells and Chemokine Receptor Expression in Breast Cancer

Mucosal environments harbour lymphocytes, which express several adhesion molecules, including intestinal homing receptors and integrin αE/β7 (CD103). CD103 binds E-cadherin, an integrin receptor expressed in intestinal endothelial cells. Its expression not only enables homing or retention of T lymphocytes at these sites but is also associated with increased T lymphocyte activation. However, it is not yet clear how CD103 expression is related to the clinical staging of breast cancer, which is determined by factors such as the size of the tumor (T), the involvement of nearby lymph nodes (N), and presence of metastasis (M). We examined the prognostic significance of CD103 by FACS in 53 breast cancer patients and 46 healthy controls enrolled, and investigated its expression, which contributes to lymphocyte recruitment in tumor tissue. Patients with breast cancer showed increased frequencies of CD103+, CD4+CD103+, and CD8+CD103+ cells compared to controls. CD103 was expressed at a high level on the surfaces of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in patients with breast cancer. Its expression in peripheral blood was not correlated with clinical TNM stage. To determine the localisation of CD103+ cells in breast tissue, tissue sections of breast tumors were stained for CD103. In tissue sections of breast tumors stained for CD103, its expression in T lymphocytes was higher compared to normal breast tissue. In addition, CD103+ cells expressed higher levels of receptors for inflammatory chemokines, compared to CD103− cells. CD103+ cells in peripheral blood and tumor tissue might be an important source of tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte trafficking, homing, and retention in cancer patients.

Background: Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) gene is associated with pathogenesis in atopic dermatitis and allergic march. TSLP gene has been revealed to have different single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) patterns according to ethnic and allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and asthma Objectives: This study aimed to investigate whether the polymorphisms in the TSLP gene are associated with atopic dermatitis (AD) and allergic march (AM) in the Korean population. Methods: Four SNPs (rs3806932, rs3806933, rs2289276, rs2289278) were analyzed via Sanger method in three groups of 91 AD patients, 74 AM patients and 131 controls. Haplotype analysis was performed, while the association between TSLP genotypes and their serum IgE level and eosinophil count was investigated. Results: Two SNPs (rs2289276, rs2289278) have possible correlation with the susceptibility to AM. Also, three SNPs (rs3806932, rs3806933, rs2289276) showed high association and their GTT haplotype is strongly associated with AM. No significant association was found between these genotypes and their level of serum IgE and eosinophil count. Conclusion: In this study, the results suggest that TSLP gene polymorphism is significantly associated with risk of allergic march in Korean population.
The effect of life satisfaction on the silver generation’s spa recognition and preferences

Background: Although the spa industry is becoming increasingly popular as it is integrated and combined with the aesthetic, cosmetic, medical, food, apparel, and amusement park industries, research and development on spas for the silver generation is still lacking. Objective: The present study aimed to analyze satisfaction with life (SwL), spa perception, and spa program preferences of the silver generation with the objective of using the findings to develop spa programs that are actually needed by the growing elderly population, and provide basic data for the revitalization of the spa market. Methods: The study population consisted of people aged 60 years and older—also known as the silver generation—who were visitors at tourist sites in Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do (South Korea). Results: The results showed that the silver generation’s self-esteem was highly correlated with their spa perception, while those with high SwL reported a high number of responses for “body massage/body treatment.” Regarding the appropriate cost of a single program, “Korean Won (KRW) 30,000-49,999” was the most common response among respondents with high SwL and “less than KRW 30,000” was the most common response among respondents with low SwL. Regarding the ideal combined program services, “special facial care+massage+care using water” was the most common response among respondents with high SwL, while “massage+care using water+total relaxation care” was the most common response among respondents with SwL. Conclusion: The silver generation’s SwL was found to be mutually associated with spa perception and spa program preferences. Therefore, the study’s findings could be used as basic data for the development of programs tailored for the silver generation and increase the positive perception about spas and the development of spa programs that consider the characteristics of people with high or low SwL.

<P>Background: This study investigated the effects of glycyrrhizin (GR) on the ratio of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) to cluster of differentiation (CD) 11b+Gr1 myeloid cells in the heart and lungs in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced septic mice. Methods: Mice were divided into three groups: Control, LPS, and LPS+GR. After intraperitoneal injection of phosphate-buffered saline for the Control group, LPS for the LPS group, and a combination of LPS and GR for the LPS+GR group, fluorescence-activated cell sorting was utilized to evaluate cytokines and immune cells in the blood, heart, and lungs. Histopathologic analysis of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 was also performed. Results: The cytokine amounts in the LPS and LPS+GR groups were significantly higher than in the Control group; however, that in the LPS+GR group was significant lower than in the LPS group. The ratio of MDSCs to CD11b+Gr1 myeloid cells in the LPS+GR group was significantly higher than in the LPS group but was significantly lower than in the Control group. The staining intensity of TLR4 showed the same pattern as that of cytokines in the heart and lungs. TLR4 staining was significantly lower in the LPS+GR group than in the LPS group but was higher than that in the Control group. Conclusion: GR exhibited protective effects on the heart and lungs in LPS-induced septic mice. The effects were associated with an elevated ratio of MDSCs to CD11b+Gr1 myeloid cells and the inhibition of cytokine release and TLR4 expression after GR injection.</P>
Diarylheptanoids from the Seeds of Alpinia katsumadai as Heat Shock Factor 1 Inducers

Seven new diarylheptanoids, (-)-(R)-4″-hydroxyyashabushiketol (1), (3S,5S)-alpinikatin (2), katsumain C (3), 7-epi-katsumain C (4), ent-alpinnanin B (5), ent-alpinnanin A (6), and ent-calyxin H (8), were isolated from the EtOAc extract of the seeds of Alpinia katsumadai together with three known compounds, alpinnanin B (7), epicalyxin H (9), and calyxin H (10). Each isomer mixture of 3 and 4, 5-7, and 8-10 was separated successfully by preparative HPLC using a chiral column. The three isomer mixtures (3 and 4, 5-7, 8-10) at 1 μM increased expression of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) with fold increases of 1.438, 1.190, and 1.316, respectively, which was accompanied with increased expression of heat shock protein (HSP) 27 (1.403-, 1.250-, and 1.270-fold, respectively) and HSP70 (1.373-, 1.313-, and 1.229-fold, respectively) without cellular cytotoxicity, suggesting a possible application of these compounds as HSP inducers. Celastrol was used as a positive control of HSP induction, producing fold increases of 1.066 (HSF1), 1.216 (HSP27), and 1.371 (HSP70) at 1 μM. Compounds 1 and 2 did not affect the induction of HSF1 protein.
