      • Signatures of minor mergers in the Milky Way disc – I. The SEGUE stellar sample

        <P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>It is now known that minor mergers are capable of creating structure in the phase‐space distribution of their host galaxy’s disc. In order to search for such imprints in the Milky Way, we analyse the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) F/G dwarf and the Schuster et al. stellar samples. We find similar features in these two completely independent stellar samples, consistent with the predictions of a Milky Way minor‐merger event. We next apply the same analyses to high‐resolution, idealized <I>N</I>‐body simulations of the interaction between the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy and the Milky Way. The energy distributions of stellar particle samples in small spatial regions in the host disc reveal strong variations of structure with position. We find good matches to the observations for models with a mass of Sagittarius’ dark matter halo progenitor <IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/lap.gif' alt ='less-than or approximately equal-to'/>10<SUP>11</SUP> M<SUB>⊙</SUB>. Thus, we show that this kind of analysis could be used to provide unprecedentedly tight constraints on Sagittarius’ orbital parameters, as well as place a lower limit on its mass.</P>

        Effects of Intra-duodenal Infusion of Limiting Amino Acids on Plasma Insulin-like Growth Factor I, Growth Hormone, Insulin and Liver Insulin-like Growth Factor I mRNA in Growing Goat Fed a Maize Stover-based Diet

        The effects of intra-duodenal infusion of methionine (Met), lysine (Lys) and leucine (Leu) on dry matter intake (DMI), the concentrations of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), growth hormone (GH) and insulin in plasma, and liver IGF-I mRNA level were investigated in two experiments for Liuyang Black growing wether goats. In Experiment 1, three goats ($10.0{\pm}0.1$ kg) were fitted with ruminal, proximal duodenal and terminal ileal fistulaes to determine the infusion amounts of Met, Lys and Leu at the duodenum according to essential amino acid flows into the duodenum and their apparent digestibility. The infusion amounts were 0.77 g/d, 0.91 g/d and 0.58 g/d respectively. In Experiment 2, 4 groups of goats (($10.0{\pm}0.2$ kg) for each group, were cannulated at the duodenum, and were infused with a mixture of Met, Lys and Leu (Control), or mixtures with 21% Met, Lys or Leu replaced with glutamate respectively on a nitrogenous basis. The replacement of 21% Met, Lys or Leu with glutamate did not affect intakes of maize stover, concentrate or both (p>0.05) when compared with the control. The replacement of 21% Met or Lys significantly (p<0.05) reduced plasma GH, insulin and IGF-I concentrations and liver IGF-I mRNA level. The replacement of 21% Leu with glutamate reduced (p<0.05) plasma IGF-I concentration only, but not plasma insulin and GH, as well as liver IGF-I mRNA level (p>0.05). The close relationships between supplying Met and Lys in the lumen of the duodenum and plasma IGF-I, GH and insulin concentrations, as well as liver IGF-I mRNA level in this study indicate that the effects of the limiting amino acids on nutrition of animals are likely intermediated via their effects on these hormones, and these hormone profiles could be used as intermediate markers for the limiting order of amino acids.

      • Microporous Magnesium and Manganese Formates for Acetylene Storage and Separation

        <P>Acetylene sorption of microporous metal formates M(HCOO)<SUB>2</SUB> (M=Mg and Mn) was investigated. Measurements of acetylene sorption at 196, 275, and 298 K showed a Type I isotherm with quick saturation at low pressures, and 50–75 cm<SUP>3</SUP> g<SUP>−1</SUP> uptake at 1.0 atm. The single-crystal X-ray structure analysis of the acetylene-adsorbed metal formates revealed that acetylene molecules occupy two independent positions in the zigzag channels of the frameworks with a stoichiometry of M(HCOO)<SUB>2</SUB>⋅1/3C<SUB>2</SUB>H<SUB>2</SUB>, which is consistent with the gas sorption experiments. No specific interaction except van der Waals interactions between the adsorbed acetylene molecules and the walls of the frameworks was found. Sorption properties of other gases, including CO<SUB>2</SUB>, CH<SUB>4</SUB>, N<SUB>2</SUB>, O<SUB>2</SUB>, and H<SUB>2</SUB>, were also investigated. When the temperature was increased to 298 K, the amount of adsorbed acetylene was still above 60 cm<SUP>3</SUP> g<SUP>−1</SUP> for Mg(HCOO)<SUB>2</SUB> and 50 cm<SUP>3</SUP> g<SUP>−1</SUP> for Mn(HCOO)<SUB>2</SUB>, whereas the uptake of other gases decreased substantially.         수용액에서 γ형 알루미나 표면에 대한 니켈이온(Ⅱ)의 흡착특성

        γ형 알루미나의 흡착특성을 구명하기 위하여 본 실험에서는 수용액에서 γ형 알루미나를 흡착제로 이용하여 온도와 pH가 니켈이온(Ⅱ)의 흡착능에 미치는 영향을 관찰하고 알루미나 표면과 니켈이온(Ⅱ) 간의 Langmuir와 Freundlich 흡착등온식과 Lagergren 흡착속도식을 결정했다. 5 g Al_2O_3/L의 조건에서 니켈이온은 10 h에 흡착평형상태에 도달했다. PH 2~6의 범위에서 pH가 증가할 때 흡착량은 급격히 증가하다가 PH 6에서 최대 흡착량을 나타냈으며 pH 6~9의 범위에서는 pH가 증가하여도 흡착량은 일정했다. 온도 20℃에서는 흡착량이 적었으나 30℃에서 급격히 흡착량이 증가하였으며 30~50 ℃의 범위에서는 온도 증가에 따라 흡착량이 완만하게 증가했다. Freundlich 흡착등온식의 결정계수는 0.9489로 Langmuir식의 0.9265보다 높았으며 Lagersen 흡착속도식에서의 k_ad값은 0.0023 h^-1으로 결정계수는 0.9497이였다. In this paper, Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms, and Lagergen adsorption rate were determined and the effect of temperature and pH on the adsorptivity of Ni(Ⅱ) ions were investigated in order t() stud)'the adsorption characteristics of γ-type alumina. For 5 g Al_2O_3/L, the adsorption equilibrium was obtained in 10 h. The adsorption amount increased rapidly when pH incrteased from 2 to 6, and the maximum adsorption amount was observed at pH 6. For pH 6 to 9, however, the adsorption amount remained constant. The adsorption amount was low at 20℃. However, The adsorption amount increased with increased in temperature; the amount increased rapidly at 30℃ and increased linearly with temperature from 30 to 50℃. The correlation coefficient (R_2) for Freundlich adsorption isotherm was 039489%, and this was higher than that for Langmuir adsorption isotherm of 0.9268%. The adsorption coefficient (k_ad) of lagergen equation was 0.0023h^-1, and the correlation coefficient (R^2) was 0.9497.

      • Highly interconnected hollow graphene nanospheres as an advanced high energy and high power cathode for sodium metal batteries

        <P>Developing sodium based energy storage systems that retain high energy density at high power along with stable cycling is of paramount importance to meet the energy demands of next generation applications. This requires the development of electrodes beyond the conventional intercalation-based chemistry to overcome the sluggish diffusion-limited reaction kinetics and limited cycle life. Herein, we report a rationally designed hollow graphene nanosphere (HGS) cathode, which utilizes non-destructive, ultra-fast surface redox reactions at oxygen functional groups and delivers a discharge capacity of ∼155 mA h g<SUP>−1</SUP> (0.1 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>) corresponding to a high energy of ∼415 W h kg<SUP>−1</SUP> and retains ∼88 W h kg<SUP>−1</SUP> of energy at a remarkable specific power of ∼84 kW kg<SUP>−1</SUP> (40 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>), which are beyond the capabilities of intercalation-based electrodes. Moreover, the achieved cycling performance (86% capacity retention after 50 000 cycles at 10 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>) is the most stable cathode performance reported so far. The rationally designed sodium metal battery full cells with a sodium metal deposited aluminium current collector anode and the HGS cathode showed a similar sodium ion storage performance with high capacity, good rate capability, and stability. We certainly believe that the current research could direct the future research development towards transition metal-free, ultra-high power and super stable cathodes for sodium energy storage devices.</P>

        Novel 5,6-disubstituted pyrrolo[2,3-<i>d</i>]pyrimidine derivatives as broad spectrum antiproliferative agents: Synthesis, cell based assays, kinase profile and molecular docking study

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Two new series of 5-subtituted and 5,6-disubstituted pyrrolo[2,3-<I>d</I>]pyrimidine octamides (<B>4a</B>–<B>o</B> and <B>6a</B>–<B>g</B>) and their corresponding free amines <B>5a</B>–<B>m</B> and <B>7a</B>–<B>g</B> have been synthesized and biologically evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against three human cancer cell lines. The 5,6-disubstituted octamides <B>6d</B>–<B>g</B> as well as the amine derivative <B>7b</B> have shown the best anticancer activity with single digit micromolar GI<SUB>50</SUB> values over the tested cancer cells, and low cytotoxic effects (GI<SUB>50</SUB> > 10.0 µM) against HFF-1 normal cell. A structure activity relationship (SAR) study has been established and disclosed that terminal octamide moiety at C2 as well as disubstitution with fluorobenzyl piperazines at C5 and C6 of pyrrolo[2,3-<I>d</I>]pyrimidine are the key structural features prerequisite for best antiproliferative activity. Moreover, the most active member <B>6f</B> was tested for its antiproliferative activity over a panel of 60 cancer cell lines at NCI, and exhibited distinct broad spectrum anticancer activity with submicromolar GI<SUB>50</SUB> and TGI values over multiple cancer cells. Kinase profile of compound <B>6f</B> over 53 oncogenic kinases at 10 µM concentration showed its highly selective inhibitory activity towards FGFR4, Tie2 and TrkA kinases. The observed activity of <B>6f</B> against TrkA (IC<SUB>50</SUB> = 2.25 µM), FGFR4 (IC<SUB>50</SUB> = 6.71 µM) and Tie2 (IC<SUB>50</SUB> = 6.84 µM) was explained by molecular docking study, which also proposed that <B>6f</B> may be a type III kinase inhibitor, binding to an allosteric site rather than kinase hinge region.       • Formate-driven growth coupled with H<sub>2</sub> production

        Although a common reaction in anaerobic environments, the conversion of formate and water to bicarbonate and H<SUB>2</SUB> (with a change in Gibbs free energy of ?G째 = +1.3??kJ??mol<SUP>??1</SUP>) has not been considered energetic enough to support growth of microorganisms. Recently, experimental evidence for growth on formate was reported for syntrophic communities of Moorella sp. strain AMP and a hydrogen-consuming Methanothermobacter species and of Desulfovibrio sp. strain G11 and Methanobrevibacter arboriphilus strain AZ. The basis of the sustainable growth of the formate-users is explained by H<SUB>2</SUB> consumption by the methanogens, which lowers the H<SUB>2</SUB> partial pressure, thus making the pathway exergonic. However, it has not been shown that a single strain can grow on formate by catalysing its conversion to bicarbonate and H<SUB>2</SUB>. Here we report that several hyperthermophilic archaea belonging to the Thermococcus genus are capable of formate-oxidizing, H<SUB>2</SUB>-producing growth. The actual ?G values for the formate metabolism are calculated to range between ??8 and ??20??kJ??mol<SUP>??1</SUP> under the physiological conditions where Thermococcus onnurineus strain NA1 are grown. Furthermore, we detected ATP synthesis in the presence of formate as a sole energy source. Gene expression profiling and disruption identified the gene cluster encoding formate hydrogen lyase, cation/proton antiporter and formate transporter, which were responsible for the growth of T. onnurineus NA1 on formate. This work shows formate-driven growth by a single microorganism with protons as the electron acceptor, and reports the biochemical basis of this ability.

        마미총으로 전이된 송과체 배아세포종 1예

        Pineal germinoma is one of the most radiosensitive intracranial tumors and not infrequently spreads through the subarachnoid space. We have experienced a case of pineal germinoma, which had been treated by deep radiotherapy over the cranium with V-A shunt and 14 months later, spinal metastasis occured. Brain CT scan showed no evididence of intracranial recurrence and myelography showed total block of dye column from L2 to L_(5) level. Operation revealed intradural tumors, and histopathological diagnosis was germinoma. After total laminectomy from L₂ to L_(5), with biopsy, spinal axis irradiation was performed with symptomatic improvement.
