Environmental Distribution of Air Pollutants and Environmental Risk Assessment in Regional Scale

We measured the concentrations of air pollutants at several residential sites, roadside sites and industrial sites in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. And the concentration distributions of air pollutants were estimated by atmospheric dispersion model using air emissions data. Based on those results, we calculated environmental risk of air pollutants emitted in Iwate Prefecture. As a result, it was found that the surround of factories with high emissions and highly toxic chemicals and the roadsides were high risk area, benzo(a)pyrene, formaldehyde and ozone exceeded the $10^{-5}$ risk level. Moreover, we tried to use "Loss of life expectancy: LLE" for an index to explain those risk to general public intelligibly. The total LLE of the carcinogenic chemicals was about 8.6 hours. Moreover, LLE of ozone was about 9.2 hours. Ozone has a big influence compared with the carcinogenic chemicals.
Application of Grinding to Waste Material Processing: An Overview

This paper introduces several waste material processing by means of fine grinding followed by chemical and/or physical operation or reaction: The first example consists of grinding the dust produced in a power station using a heavy oil as a fuel, following water rinsing to extract V from the electric precipitation (EP) dust. The second is to extract indium (In) from ITO scrap produced by a sand-blasting using Al2O3 powder, followed by grinding by a planetary mill in air. The third is to extract rare earths (Y, Eu, La, Ce and Tb) from fluorescent lamp wastes which contain Y, Eu, La, Ce and Tb-compounds. Leaching the fluorescent powder using 1N HCl solution at room temperature after grinding of the powder in air using a planetary ball mill was conducted. The fourth example is to dechlorinate polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) and defluorination of PVDF. The final example is to recover the energy in biomass in form of hydrogen by solid-state reaction of cellulose with hydroxide additives with aid of MC treatment.

We report the mechanochemical effect of an Fe(NO$_3$)$_3$$.$9H$_2$O-Al(OH)$_3$sample as catalytic precursor mixed-ground by mixer mill on the growth of carbon nanotubes using thermal chemical vapor deposition method. From and TEM observations, carbon products grown on a ground catalyst were more uniform than those grown on an unground catalyst and most of them were identified as carbon nanobubes. Also, it was observed that field emission properties of products on ground catalyst were superior to those of unground catalyst. 열화학기상증착법으로 탄소나노튜브를 합성할 때, 촉배전구체로 사용하는 Fe(NO$_3$)$_3$.9$H_2O$-Al(OH)$_3$혼합물을 믹서밀을 이용하여 혼합분쇄한 후, 이 혼합물을 사용하영 합성에 미치는 메카노케미컬 효과를 조사하였다. SEM과 TEM 관찰 결과, 분쇄된 촉매 위에서 합성된 탄소생성물이 미분쇄 촉매위에서 성장한 생성물에 비해 훨씬 균일했으며, 대부분의 생성물이 탄소나노튜브로서 존재하였다. 또한, 전류-전압 측정을 통해서, 분쇄 촉매에서의 생성물의 전계 방출 특성이 미분쇄 촉매에서보다 우수함을 확인하였다.
Synthesis and Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2-ZrO2 Nano-Sized Powders by Sol-Gel Process

TiO2-ZrO2 powders were successfully synthesized by the sol-gel process using titanium iso-propoxide as a precursor. The amorphous TiO2 particles, 70 nm in size, homogenously adhered to the surface of ZrO2 the powders. After calcination at 450 oC, most of the TiO2 powders appeared as an anatase type, whereas they changed to a rutile phase at 750 oC.For comparison of photocatalytic activity, TiO2-ZrO2 nano-sized powders calcined at 450 oC, 600 oC and 750 oC were used. In the TiO2-20wt%ZrO2 powders calcined at 450 oC, there was excellent removal efficiency of methyl orange (MO). For the calcination temperature increased, TiO2-ZrO2 nano-sized powders increased ZrO2 contents showed the good photoactivity for the photooxidation of MO.

Black soybean seed coat extract (BE) contains multiple bioactive polyphenols, including flavan-3-ols andanthocyanins. BE improves endothelial function; however, it is unclear whether BE protects endothelial cells from senescence. In this study, we examined the effects of BE on endothelial cell senescence and vascular function in healthy individuals. High concentrations of glucose were used to induce senescence in bovine aortic endothelial cells incubated with BE. Senescence, vascular function, and oxidative stress markers were measured. Incubation with BE remarkably inhibitedsenescence-associated b-galactosidase and lactate dehydrogenase activities and dose dependently reduced intracellular reactiveoxygen species levels in bovine aortic endothelial cells. BE treatment increased the levels of endothelial nitric oxidesynthase (eNOS) mRNA and endothelial nitric oxide (NO) metabolites and increased the mRNA expression of klotho, a geneassociated with an antiaging phenotype. To examine the effects of BE in humans, we conducted a clinical study using the secondderivative of the fingertip photoplethysmogram to investigate vascular function and aging in 24 healthy volunteers. The participantsconsumed BE supplements (100mg/day) or a placebo for 2 weeks. When compared with the placebo group, the BE groupshowed considerably improved vascular function, NO metabolite levels, and oxidative stress. These results suggest that BEsupplementation improves endothelial function, possibly through antioxidant activity and NO production, and may consequentlyreduce the cardiovascular risk associated with aging. BE supplementation may be an effective and safe approach to reduce the riskof atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease; however, additional studies investigating chronic vascular inflammation are needed.
