<P><B>Under the Dome</B></P><P>The superconducting transition temperature <I>T<SUB>c</SUB></I> of copper oxides has a dome-shaped dependence on chemical doping. Whether there is a quantum critical point (QCP) beneath the dome, and whether it is related to the enigmatic pseudogap, has been heavily debated. Two papers address this question in two different families of Bi-based cuprates. In (Bi,Pb)<SUB>2</SUB>(Sr,La)<SUB>2</SUB>CuO<SUB>6+δ</SUB>, <B>He <I>et al.</I></B> (p. 608) found that the Fermi surface (FS) undergoes a topological change as doping is increased, which points to the existence of a QCP at a doping close to the maximum in <I>T<SUB>c</SUB></I>, seemingly uncorrelated with the pseudogap. <B>Fujita <I>et al.</I></B> (p. 612) studied a range of dopings in Bi<SUB>2</SUB>Sr<SUB>2</SUB>CaCu<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>8+δ</SUB> to find an FS reconstruction simultaneous with the disappearance of both rotational and translational symmetry breaking, the latter of which has been associated with the pseudogap. These findings point to a concealed QCP.</P>
Prospects of Activated Sludge Process in Japan - Its Past, Present, and Future -

Our life totally depends on activated sludgeprocess for treatment of wastewater: sewage and industrial wastewater. Activated sludge process was the epoch-making technology in Environmental field. One century has been almost passed since the process was developed in England, and the process is still on the development of improvement. Here, history of activated sludge process, its mechanismsof treating the wastewater, expectations that we had on the process in the past, and future image and possibility on the process were presented. By reviewing the events related to the process, we can foresee potentials for new possibility of activated sludge process.

This study was conducted to determine effects of salinomycin (SL) on feeding-induced changes in glucose kinetics and blood VFA concentrations in sheep fed a high-roughage diet. Four sheep were fed the diet with or without 20 mg/kg diet of SL once daily for 21 d. Glucose entry and utilization rates were determined during the prefeeding and 3 h postfeeding periods, using a [$^{13}C_6$]glucose dilution method and non-steady state equations. Ruminal characteristics and concentrations of blood VFA, plasma glucose and insulin were also measured during the same periods. A feeding-induced increase in ruminal total VFA concentration tended to be inhibited (p<0.10) with SL, although ruminal pH was unaffected (p>0.10) with SL or by feeding. Salinomycin decreased (p<0.05) acetate proportion and increased (p<0.05) propionate proportion in the rumen, but did not modify these changes in response to feeding (p>0.10). A feeding-induced increase in blood acetate concentration was attenuated (p<0.05) with SL. Salinomycin tended to increase (p<0.10) blood propionate concentration without modifying its response patterns to feeding (p>0.10). Plasma concentrations of glucose or insulin were unaffected (p>0.10) with SL. Salinomycin tended to enhance (p<0.10) glucose entry and utilization rates. Feeding also enhanced (p<0.01) both rates, whereas their interactive effect was not detected (p>0.10). We conclude that SL possibly enhances whole body glucose entry and utilization with an increase in blood propionate concentration in sheep given a high-roughage diet, although SL does not appear to affect their responses to feeding.
A Study on Development of Advanced Environmental-Resistant Materials Using Metal Ion Processing

The development of the oxidation, wear and corrosion resistant materials that could be used in severe environmental conditions is needed. The elementary technologies for surface modification include ion implantation and/or thin film coating. Furthermore, in order to develop ion implantation technique to the specimens with three-dimensional shapes, plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) techniques were investigated. As a result, it was found that the ion implantation and/or thin film coating used in this study were/was effective for improving the properties of materials, which include implantations of various kinds of ions into TiAl alloy, TiN films formed on surface of base material and coatings in high-temperature steam. The techniques proposed in this study provide useful information for all of the material systems required to use at elevated temperature. For the practical applications, several results will be presented along with laboratory test results.
Preparati on and Characterization of (Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Dy, Er and Tm)

Lanthanide tantalite (Ln= La, Nd, Sm, Dy, Er and Tm) was synthesized by a solid state reaction between mixed powders of and . The single-phase was prepared by sintering at temperatures of 1423-1673 K in air. The SEM observation showed that the particles were provided with the growth steps and the depeloped facets. The photocatalytic activity for water splitting of prepared was measured under UV light irradiation. The activity obtained was higher than that previously reported. These results suggested the crystallinity of photocatalysts correlates closely with the efficiency of water splitting.
