Cyclic fatigue resistance of M-Pro and RaCe Ni-Ti rotary endodontic instruments in artificial curved canals: a comparative in vitro study

Feky, Hadeer Mostafa El,Ezzat, Khalid Mohammed,Bedier, Marwa Mahmoud Ali The Korean Academy of Conservative Dentistry 2019 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.44 No.4

Objectives: To compare the flexural cyclic fatigue resistance and the length of the fractured segments (FLs) of recently introduced M-Pro rotary files with that of RaCe rotary files in curved canals and to evaluate the fracture surface by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Materials and Methods: Thirty-six endodontic files with the same tip size and taper (size 25, 0.06 taper) were used. The samples were classified into 2 groups (n = 18): the M-Pro group (M-Pro IMD) and the RaCe group (FKG). A custom-made simulated canal model was fabricated to evaluate the total number of cycles to failure and the FL. SEM was used to examine the fracture surfaces of the fragmented segments. The data were statistically analyzed and comparisons between the 2 groups for normally distributed numerical variables were carried out using the independent Student's t-test. A p value less than 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: The M-Pro group showed significantly higher resistance to flexural cyclic fatigue than the RaCe group (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference in the FLs between the 2 groups (p ≥ 0.05). Conclusions: Thermal treatment of nickel-titanium instruments can improve the flexural cyclic fatigue resistance of rotary endodontic files, and the M-Pro rotary system seems to be a promising rotary endodontic file.

Realistic Evaluation of Reinforcement Bond Strength in Alkali-Activated Slag Concrete Exposed to Elevated Temperature

        Ismail Amer,Mohamed Kohail,M. S. El-Feky,Ahmed Rashad,Mohamed A. Khalaf 한국콘크리트학회 2023 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.17 No.5

Alkali-activated concrete (AAC) has attained great popularity since finding it as an alternative to Portland cement concrete due to its superior characteristics in terms of mechanical properties and durability, and its low negative environmental impact. This research investigated both experimentally and analytically the bond behavior between alkali-activated slag concrete (AASC) and steel rebars considering some important parameters (rebar diameter and development length-to-diameter ratio) before and after exposure to elevated temperature using beam-end bond testing technique. The obtained experimental results were compared with those obtained from applying the CEB-FIP model and the well-known available equations in the literature. A modified model was proposed for predicting the bond behavior of AASC. Results have showed that the CEB-FIP model provides more conservative values for bond strength compared to the experimentally obtained results which increases the safety level when estimating the bond strength for design purposes. The proposed modified model achieved a higher correlation with the experimental results than the CEB-FIP model at ambient temperature.

Impacts of siltstone rocks on the ordinary concrete's physical, mechanical and gamma-ray shielding properties: An experimental examination

        Aita R.S.,Mahmoud K.A.,Ghany H.A. Abdel,Ibrahim E.M.,El-Feky M.G.,El Aassy I.E. 한국원자력학회 2024 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.56 No.6

A series of ordinary concrete is casted in order to examine the influence of the manganiferous siltstone rocks on the physical, mechanical, and gamma-ray shielding properties. Thus, a partial replacement for the coarse aggregates by siltstone rocks was performed during the fabrication of the currently ordinary concrete. The test revealed that raising the siltstone concentration improved the mechanical characteristics and density of the developed concretes. The addition of siltstone rocks at concentrations ranging from 0 to 40 wt% of the coarse aggregate concentration raises the density of the concrete from 2.05 g/cm3 to 2.3 g/cm3. Furthermore, partial substitution of basalt with siltstone rocks improves gamma-ray shielding properties. The experimental results for the linear attenuation coefficient show an increase in its value from 0.146 cm1 to 0.160 cm 1 when the siltstone concentration is increased between 0 and 40 wt% at 0.662 MeV. Furthermore, increasing the concentrations of siltstone affected the half-value thickness, which varied between 4.759 and 4.319 cm at 0.662 MeV. Therefore, the replacement presents a new alternative coarse aggregate that can enhance the mechanical and radiation shielding properties of ordinary concretes.

SOME NUMERICAL RADIUS INEQUALITIES FOR SEMI-HILBERT SPACE OPERATORS

Feki, Kais Korean Mathematical Society 2021 대한수학회지 Vol.58 No.6

Let A be a positive bounded linear operator acting on a complex Hilbert space (𝓗, ⟨·,·⟩). Let ωA(T) and ║T║A denote the A-numerical radius and the A-operator seminorm of an operator T acting on the semi-Hilbert space (𝓗, ⟨·,·⟩A), respectively, where ⟨x, y⟩A := ⟨Ax, y⟩ for all x, y ∈ 𝓗. In this paper, we show with different techniques from that used by Kittaneh in [24] that $$\frac{1}{4}{\parallel}T^{{\sharp}_A}T+TT^{{\sharp}_A}{\parallel}_A{\leq}{\omega}^2_A(T){\leq}\frac{1}{2}{\parallel}T^{{\sharp}_A}T+TT^{{\sharp}_A}{\parallel}_A.$$ Here T#A denotes a distinguished A-adjoint operator of T. Moreover, a considerable improvement of the above inequalities is proved. This allows us to compute the 𝔸-numerical radius of the operator matrix $\(\array{I&T\\0&-I}\)$ where 𝔸 = diag(A, A). In addition, several A-numerical radius inequalities for semi-Hilbert space operators are also established.

      • Context Aware and Ontology Specification for Assistive Environment

M,A,Feki,M,Mokhtari 한국과학기술원 인간친화 복지 로봇 시스템 연구센터 2005 International Journal of Assistive Robotics and Me Vol.6 No.4

This paper describes the ongoing research on the design of a context aware model Ontology dedicated to smart environment for dependant people (aging and disabilities). The aim of this research work is to provide “just-in-time” services for accessibility and assistance of people with disabilities and elderly people in their own daily living environment. Existing context aware frameworks did not consider these types of application, nor anticipated the development of adapted ontology taking into account the user profile of dependant people. In this paper we present our current context aware ontology based model, issued from former development on human-machine interface experimented in real life environment with people having severe physical disabilities. The aim is to provide an appropriate ontology based model applied to assistive technology. The ultimate goal objective is to build a context aware assistive framework fostering a rapid and widespread adoption of assistive services in order to enable people with disabilities and ageing citizens to fully participate to society.

Tuberculous and Brucellar Spondylodiscitis: Comparative Analysis of Clinical, Laboratory, and Radiological Features

        Hammami Fatma,Koubaa Makram,Feki Wiem,Chakroun Amal,Rekik Khaoula,Smaoui Fatma,Marrakchi Chakib,Mnif Zeineb,Jemaa Mounir Ben 대한척추외과학회 2021 Asian Spine Journal Vol.15 No.6

Study Design: This was a retrospective study. Purpose: The aim was to compare the clinical, laboratory, radiological, and evolutionary features of tuberculous spondylodiscitis (TS) and brucellar spondylodiscitis (BS). Overview of Literature: Clinical presentation of spondylodiscitis varies according to the underlying etiology, among which brucellosis and tuberculosis represent the primary cause, in endemic countries. Only a few studies have compared the characteristics between TS and BS. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted using the data of all patients hospitalized for TS and BS in the infectious diseases department between 1991 and 2018. Results: Among a total of 117 patients, 73 had TS (62.4%) and 44 had BS (37.6%). Females were significantly more affected with TS than males (56.2% vs. 22.7%, p <0.001). Fever (72.7% vs. 45.2%, p =0.004) and sweating (72.7% vs. 47.9%, p =0.009) were significantly more frequent among patients with BS. The median erythrocyte sedimentation rate was significantly higher in the TS group (median, 70 mm/hr; interquartile range [IQR], 45–103 mm/hr) than in the BS group (median, 50 mm/hr; IQR, 16–75 mm/hr) (p =0.003). Thoracic involvement was significantly more frequent in the TS group (53.4% vs. 34.1%, p =0.04), whereas lumbar involvement was significantly more frequent in the BS group (72.7% vs. 49.3%, p =0.01). Initial imaging findings revealed significantly higher frequencies of posterior vertebral arch involvement, vertebral compaction, and spinal cord compression in the TS group. Percutaneous abscess drainage (20.5% vs. 2.3%, p =0.005) and surgical treatment (17.8% vs. 2.3%, p =0.01) were more frequently indicated in the TS group, with a significant difference. Conclusions: A combination of clinical, laboratory, and radiological features can be used to distinguish between TS and BS while these patients await diagnosis confirmation.

Novel alkali borosilicate glasses: Preparation, structural investigation and thermal study

Hassane Oudadesse,Amina Gharbi,Hafed El Feki 한국화학공학회 2016 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.33 No.4

Bioactive glasses are indicated for use as bone substitutes in orthopedic or dental surgery because of their high reactivity once in contact with the biological medium. Boron is known as a glass network former and an activator of the glasses bioactivity. In this work, bioactive glass was doped by 5, 10 and 20 wt% of B2O3 according to the melting process. Adding boron oxide with high content enhances glass materials’ bioactivity. Likewise, thanks to their solubility, borate-containing bioactive glasses were fluently used as orthopedic implants. The aim of our study was to investigate of boron effect on the thermal characteristics of our bioactive glass to better understand their proprieties in order for use as bone biomaterial. The obtained results proved that the more the boron content in the glass network increases, the more the melting temperature decreases and the more the thermal stability increases.

Impact of a 12-week high-intensity interval training without caloric restriction on body composition and lipid profile in sedentary healthy overweight/obese youth

        Marwa Khammassi,Nejmeddine Ouerghi,Sameh Hadj-Taieb,Moncef Feki,David Thivel,Anissa Bouassida 한국운동재활학회 2018 JER Vol.14 No.1

Although High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has shown its effective-ness in improving body composition, cardio-respiratory fitness and lipid profile in obese adults, evidences remain limited in overweight/obese youth. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of a 12-week HIIT program without caloric restriction on body composition and lipid profile among young overweight/obese men. Twenty healthy obese youth were randomly allocated into two groups; experimental group (HIIT) and control group. The HIIT program consisted in 3 exercises sessions per week (30 sec of work at 100% maximal aerobic velocity [MAV]) interspersed by 30 sec of active recovery at 50% MAV, starting by 15 repetitions to reach 27 by the end of the program. Aerobic capaci-ty (MAV and maximum oxygen uptake [VO2max]), body composition (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference [WC], and fat mass percent) and lipid profile (triglycerides [TG] and total, high-density lipoprotein [HDL] and low-density lipoprotein [LDL] cholesterol) were determined before and after the HIIT program. Following 12 weeks of HIIT, WC, BMI (P<0.01), and fat mass percent (P<0.05) were significantly decreased. MAV and VO2max were significantly improved in the HIIT group, only. To-tal cholesterol (P<0.05) and TG (P<0.05) decreased significantly in the HIIT group, while LDL and HDL cholesterol levels remained unchanged in both groups. HIIT may be particularly useful in overweight/obese youth to improve body composition, aerobic fitness and lipid profile.
