Effect of Intermittent Fasting on Glucose Homeostasis and Bone Remodeling in Glucocorticoid-Induced Osteoporosis Rat Model

        Majed G. Alrowaili,Abdelaziz M. Hussein,Elsayed A. Eid,Mohamed S. Serria,Hussein Abdellatif,Hussein F Sakr 대한골대사학회 2021 대한골대사학회지 Vol.28 No.4

Background: The present study examined the effect of intermittent fasting (IF) on bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) and the markers of bone remodeling in a glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO) rat model. Methods: Forty male rats were allocated to 4 groups (N=10 per group): control group of normal rats; control+IF group (normal rats subjected to IF for 16-18 hr daily for 90 days); dexamethasone (DEX) group: (DEX [0.5 mg i.p.] for 90 days); and DEX+IF group (DEX and IF for 90 days). By the end of the experiment, BMD and BMC in the right tibia were measured. Serum levels of the following were measured: glucose; insulin; triglycerides (TGs); total cholesterol; parathyroid hormone (PTH); osteoprotegerin (OPG); receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (RANK); bone-resorbing cytokines, including bone deoxypyridinoline (DPD), N-terminal telopeptide of collagen type I (NTX-1), and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRAP-5b); and bone-forming cytokines, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteocalcin (OC). Results: DEX administration for 90 days resulted in significantly increased serum levels of glucose, insulin, TGs, cholesterol, PTH, OPG, DPD, NTX-1, and TRAP-5b and significantly decreased BMD, BMC, and serum levels of RANK, OC, and ALP (all P<0.05). IF for 90 days significantly improved all these parameters (all P<0.05). Conclusions: IF corrected GIO in rats by inhibiting osteoclastogenesis and PTH secretion and stimulating osteoblast activity.

Synthesis of polyoxometalates supported on HZSM-5 for the photocatalytic purification of crude terephthalic acid under mild conditions

        Hussein, A.M.,Mady, A.H.,Mahmoud, S.,Shim, J.-J.,Yehia, F.Z. Elsevier 2019 Journal of photochemistry and photobiology Chemist Vol.377 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Phosphomolybdic (PMo) and vanadium-containing phosphomolybdic (PV2Mo) acids were synthesized and supported on HZSM-5 zeolite via a wet impregnation technique and used as photocatalysts for the purification of terephthalic acid (TA) via an economic process. Nowadays, purified TA can be obtained from crude TA due to their great commercial importance by separating 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (4-CBA), which represents high environmental toxicity and negatively affects the applications of TA. For these reasons, conversion of 4-CBA to TA is highly desirable for both enhancing the efficiency of purified TA production and environmental reasons. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, BET, SEM, and TEM. The purification process was carried out by under different parameters as VUV irradiation, persulfate (PS), time, and different types of catalysts (PMo or PV2Mo)/HZSM-5. This kind of combination showed complete removal of the 4-CBA with a high yield of PTA in 2 h. The high efficiency attributed to the acidity of the polyoxometalates/HZSM-5, which increase the selectivity to oxidize 4-CBA at room temperature and much shorter reaction time compared to other common methods.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> PMo or PV2Mo / HZSM-5 used as a photocatalyst for the economic purification of CTA. </LI> <LI> Catalyst achieve complete purification for CTA at 2 h and at room temperature. </LI> <LI> PV2Mo/HZSM-5 show no significant loss of catalytic activity for four consecutive. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Effect of Supplemental Chromium Levels on Performance, Digestibility and Carcass Characteristics of Transport-stressed Lambs

        Kraidees, M.S.,Al-Haidary, I.A.,Mufarrej, S.I.,Al-Saiady, M.Y.,Metwally, H.M.,Hussein, M.F. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.8

A trial was conducted to study the effect of supplemental chromium (Cr) levels from a Cr-yeast source on performance, digestibility and carcass characteristics of transport-stressed lambs. Forty-eight Naemi lambs (avg. BW 31.7 kg) were transported by truck for a distance of 1,450 km. On arrival day, the lambs were randomly allocated to four groups receiving diets supplemented with 0.0, 0.3, 0.6 or 0.9 ppm Cr. Each group consisted of four separately housed replicates of three lambs each. The lambs were fed their respective diets ad libitum for 84 d (21 d stress period, followed by 63 d growing period). Road transit of lambs resulted in a decreased (p<0.001) live body weight of 8.5%. Supplementation of Cr-yeast did not alter the performance of lambs during the stress period. Linear and quadratic increases (p<0.05) were observed in DMI and ADG, respectively, with increasing supplemental Cr levels in the diets during the growing period. Values were greater (p<0.05) by 14.7% and 20.8%, respectively, for lambs fed 0.3 ppm Cr compared to control, while those fed on the other two levels were intermediate. Over the 84-d feeding period, a trend was noted towards a slight increase in loin eye area and a decrease in body wall fat thickness for lambs fed Cr supplementation compared to the control group. This study suggests that the supplementation of Cr-yeast, especially at 0.3 ppm level, is beneficial for improving the performance of growing lambs whether the animals are stressed or not.

Effect of Chromium Dietary Supplementation on the Immune Response and Some Blood Biochemical Parameters of Transport-stressed Lambs

        Al-Mufarrej, S.I.,Al-Haidary, I.A.,Al-Kraidees, M.S.,Hussein, M.F.,Metwally, H.M. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2008 Animal Bioscience Vol.21 No.5

Forty-eight Naemi lambs (avg. BW 31.7 kg) were transported by truck for a distance of 1,450 km from Al-Jouf to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. On arrival day, the lambs were randomly allocated to four groups receiving diets supplemented with 0.0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 ppm organic chromium (Cr). Each group consisted of four separately housed replicates of three lambs each. The animals were fed ad libitum on a grower diet for 84 days. Blood samples were obtained shortly before transportation, upon arrival and at weekly intervals thereafter from all lambs for analysis of plasma and serum. Plasma glucose and serum cortisol, total protein, albumin, urea-N and total cholesterol concentrations were determined. A cursory clinical examination of the lambs, along with rectal temperature, was undertaken at different intervals during the experiment. The lambs were inoculated each with 2 ml i.v. chicken red blood cells (CRBC) on days 0, 21, and 42. Serum total, IgG and IgM antibody titers were determined at weekly intervals post-immunization. An in vivo intradermal hypersensitivity test was carried out on 6 lambs from each group on days 10 and 70. Transportation of the lambs resulted in a significant (p<0.001) elevation of serum cortisol, total protein and albumin levels, as well as increased plasma glucose concentration, with corresponding decrease in total cholesterol, while blood urea-N remained largely unchanged. These constituents returned to normal levels during subsequent weeks, with no significant differences in their concentrations being observed between the Cr-supplemented groups and controls. Rise in rectal temperature after transportation was reduced to a greater extent (p<0.05) in Cr-supplemented versus control lambs. Total, IgG and IgM antibody titers against CRBC rose significantly (p<0.05) during immunizations in all groups, with significantly and linearly higher (p<0.05) total and IgG titers in Cr-supplemented versus control lambs. By contrast, no significant effect due to Cr supplementation was recorded in IgG titers, which increased equally in Cr-fed and control groups. Skin thickness in response to intradermal inoculation of phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) was also significantly (p<0.01) increased as a result of Cr supplementation. These results indicate that dietary Cr supplementation might be useful during stress especially for enhancing immune responses in transport-stressed lambs.

THE HAEMATOLOGY OF GROWING CAMELS (Camelus dromedarius) DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF LIFE

        Hussein, M.F.,Liman, M.M.,Mogawer, H.H.,Bakkar, M.N.,Garel Nabi, A.R. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1992 Animal Bioscience Vol.5 No.3

The haematological profiles of camel calves of either sex were monitored at monthly intervals between 1-12 months of age. RBC, Hb and PCV increased with age for several months, with corresponding increases in MCH and MCHC, and a relative reduction in MCV. WBC and lymphocyte counts were highest at the age of 1 month, fell progressively during the following 6 months, and stabilized thereafter. Neutrophils were also highest at the age of one month and decreased slowly with advancing age. Eosinophils, monocytes and basophils fluctuated only from month to month. Age effect was significant for WBC, lymphocytes and neutrophils, and all the erythrocytic parameters, except MCV. Sex effect was significant for Hb and eosinophils.

Effects of heme oxygenase-1 upregulation on isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction

Eltobshy, Somaia A.G.,Hussein, Abdelaziz M.,Elmileegy, Asaad A.,Askar, Mona H.,Khater, Yomna,Metias, Emile F.,Helal, Ghada M. The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2019 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.23 No.3

The present study was designed to examine the effect of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) induction by cobalt protoporphyrin (CoPP) on the cardiac functions and morphology, electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, myocardial antioxidants (superoxide dismutase [SOD] and glutathione [GSH]), and expression of heat shock protein (Hsp) 70 and connexin 43 (Cx-43) in myocardial muscles in isoproterenol (ISO) induced myocardial infarction (MI). Thirty two adult male Sprague Dawely rats were divided into 4 groups (each 8 rats): normal control (NC) group, ISO group: received ISO at dose of 150 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 2 successive days; ISO + Trizma group: received (ISO) and Trizma (solvent of CoPP) at dose of 5 mg/kg i.p. injection 2 days before injection of ISO, with ISO at day 0 and at day 2 after ISO injections; and ISO + CoPP group: received ISO and CoPP at a dose of 5 mg/kg dissolved in Trizma i.p. injection as Trizma. We found that, administration of ISO caused significant increase in heart rate, corrected QT interval, ST segment, cardiac enzymes (lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase-muscle/brain), cardiac HO-1, Hsp70 with significant attenuation in myocardial GSH, SOD, and Cx-43. On the other hand, administration of CoPP caused significant improvement in ECG parameters, cardiac enzymes, cardiac morphology; antioxidants induced by ISO with significant increase in HO-1, Cx-43, and Hsp70 expression in myocardium. In conclusions, we concluded that induction of HO-1 by CoPP ameliorates ISO-induced myocardial injury, which might be due to up-regulation of Hsp70 and gap junction protein (Cx-43).

Studies on the morphology and histology of the ovary of red palm weevil female irradiated with gamma rays

        Samira E.M. El Naggar,Eman A. Mahmoud,Hussein F. Mohamed 한국응용곤충학회 2010 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.13 No.1

The present study involves red palm weevil adults Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Oliver) (Coleoptera:Curculionidae) irradiated with 5, 10 or 15 Gy of gamma radiation. The biological effects of gamma irradiation on the F1 adult females, descendant of irradiated parental male pupae, were studied. The percentage egg hatch decreased significantly, as the dose increased, compared with the untreated control. The effect of gamma irradiation on the morphology of the ovaries showed a remarkable effect on size, shape and measurement of the paired ovaries. Additionally, histological studies showed some damages by irradiation of the oocytes maturation, which increased with increasing dose. These symptoms were elongation of the terminal filament, rupture, separation, or shrinkage of external sheath and follicular epithelium, degenerated or absent of nurse cells, and ruptured oocytes at 15 Gy. Vacuolation appeared in different degrees inside the oocytes and the nurse cells were absent in some areas. The damage in the oocytes was more severe as the dose was increased. The follicular epithelium was thin, oocytes clumped together throughout the ovariole causing some oocytes become abnormal or rectangular in shape.
