Objectives: The pollution status of heavy metals within the soil was investigated with an aim to establishing a sustainable soil environment within parks and amusement facilities installed in urban areas of Gyeonggi–do Province. Methods: As sampling sites, 14 locations were selected from a city with a number of factories near a residential area, a residential area, and a children s park in a city with mixed green areas. Seven kinds of heavy metals, including Cd, Pb, and Hg, and the pH of soil were analyzed three times by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). Results: In this study, the pH of the samples from the residential park and industrial park showed 5.7-6.5 and 5.9-7.0, respectively. The overall mean concentration (mg/kg) of heavy metals was Zn (132.8), Ni (73.0), Cu (47.4), Pb (35.9), As (4.84), Cd (0.39), and Hg (0.07), indicating that these concentrations of heavy metals were lower than those for the area 1 standard of soil pollution concern criteria. In addition, the sampling sites in the residential area and the industrial area also showed the same tendency for concentration distribution. Conclusions: We found that the soil pollution class (SPC) of some spots were over 200, which are third and fourth classes. In order to manage a sustainable soil environment in a city park, it is suggested that local governments, the management bodies for these parks, need to manage, supervise, and investigate soil pollution and quickly replace contaminated soil.
Injectable <i>In Situ</i>-Forming pH/Thermo-Sensitive Hydrogel for Bone Tissue Engineering

<P>We developed a novel pH- and thermo-sensitive hydrogel as a scaffold for autologous bone tissue engineering. We synthesized this polymer by adding pH-sensitive sulfamethazine oligomers (SMOs) to both ends of a thermo-sensitive poly(epsilon-caprolactone-co-lactide)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(epsilon-caprolactone-co-lactide) (PCLA-PEG-PCLA) block copolymer, yielding a pH/thermo-sensitive SMO-PCLA-PEG-PCLA-SMO block copolymer. The synthesized block copolymer solution rapidly formed a stable gel under physiological conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 degrees C), whereas it formed a sol at pH 8.0 and 37 degrees C, making it injectable. This pH/thermo-sensitive hydrogel exhibited high biocompatibility in a Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium extract test. Under physiological conditions, the hydrogel easily encapsulated human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2), with encapsulating efficiencies of about 90% and 85%, respectively. To assay for ectopic bone formation in vivo, we subcutaneously injected a polymer solution containing hMSCs and rhBMP-2 into the back of mice, after which we could observe hMSC differentiation for up to 7 weeks. Histological studies revealed mineralized tissue formation and high levels of alkaline phosphatase activity in the mineralized tissue. Therefore, this pH/thermo-sensitive SMO-PCLA-PEG-PCLA-SMO block copolymer demonstrated potential as an injectable scaffold for bone tissue engineering, with in situ formation capabilities.</P>

<P>Heterostructures enable the control of transport and recombination of charge carriers, which are either injected through electrodes, or created by light illumination. Instead of full 2D-material-heterostructures in device applications, using hybrid heterostructures consisting of 2D and 3D materials is an alternative approach to take advantage of the unique physical properties of 2D materials. In addition, 3D dielectric nanostructures exhibit useful optical properties such as broadband omnidirectional antireflection effects and strongly concentrated light near the surface. In this work, the optical properties of 2D MoS2 monolayers conformally coated on 3D Si-based nanocone (NC) arrays are investigated. Numerical calculations show that the absorption in MoS2 monolayers on SiO2 NC is significantly enhanced, compared with that for MoS2 monolayers on Si NC. The weak light confinement in low refractive index SiO2 NC leads to greater absorption in the MoS2 monolayers. The measured photoluminescence and Raman intensities of the MoS2 monolayers on SiO2 NC are much greater than those on Si NC, which supports the calculation results. This work demonstrates that 2D MoS2-3D Si nano-heterostructures are promising candidates for use in high-performance integrated optoelectronic device applications.</P>

The present study tested whether adult Korean learners of English are able to immediately integrate verb-specific structural information (i.e. subcategorization restrictions imposed by individual verbs) as they read sentences in English. Seventeen native speakers of English and 22 Korean learners of English participated in an eye-tracking experiment, in which they read English sentences that contained a wh-dependency between the head NP and the verb of a relative clause. The relative clause verbs consisted of three types that varied in terms of subcategorization properties: transitive verbs that take an NP complement more often than a PP complement, transitive verbs that take a PP complement more often than an NP complement, and unaccusative verbs that are strictly intransitive. The results suggest that whereas native speakers use verb subcategorization information in making initial parsing decisions regarding wh-dependency formation, Korean learners are only able to integrate the information in later stages of sentence processing. Possible accounts of this discrepancy in the time course of verb information integration are discussed.
Role of Verb Argument Structure in L2 English Sentence Processing by Korean Learners

이 연구는 한국인 영어 학습자가 영어의 간접 의문문 문장을 읽을 때 어떤 과정을 통해 wh-의존관계를 형성하는지에 초점을 두어 제2언어 문장 처리과정을 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 상위 수준의 한국인 영어학습자 32명과 영어 원어민화자 24명이 실시간 의미 개연성 판단 과업에 참여하였다. 실험에 사용된 문장은 의미적 개연성과 (예, “I wonder which book the child read in bed at night.”와 “I wonder which food the child read in bed at night.”) 내포된 동사의 논항구조(예, read, sent, reminded)를 조작하였다. 실험참여자는 주어진 문장을 지정된 버튼을 눌러 한 영역씩 읽으면서 해석하였고 문장의 의미가 더 이상 자연스럽지 않다고 판단되면 다른 지정 된 버튼을 눌렀다. 각 실험 조건에서 문장의 개연성 판단수행을 요약한 실험 결과는 한국인 학습자가 문장을 읽는 과정에서 접하는 동사의 논항구조를 문장이해 과정에서 고려할 수 있지만, 관련 정보를 실시간으로 처리하는 능력은 원어민화자에 비해 상대적으로 떨어진다는 것을 보여준다. 이러한 결과가 제2언어 문장 처리를 이해하는데 어떤 함의를 가지는지 논의하였다. The current study examines second language (L2) sentence processing with focus on how advanced Korean learners of English compute wh-dependencies while reading indirect wh-questions in English. 32 Korean learners and 24 native speakers of English participated in an online implausibility detection task. Participants read English sentences region by region that were either globally plausible (eg. I wonder which book the child read in bed at night.) or implausible (eg. I wonder which food the child read in bed at night.). The argument structure of the embedded verbs was also manipulated (eg. read, sent, reminded). While reading a sentence, participants indicated whether it was plausible or not at each region. The results suggest that Korean learners consider the argument structure of the verb that they encounter while reading a sentence, but their ability to incorporate the information is limited as compared to native speakers of English. Implications of the findings are discussed for a better understanding of L2 sentence processing.

The surface photovoltage (SPV) characteristics of periodic nanopillar (NP) arrays formed on Si wafers were investigated. The NP arrays exhibited broadband omnidirectional antireflection effects with Mie resonance. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) revealed that the positive fixed charges in SiNx layers induced band bending at the Si surface and increased surface photovoltage (SPV) at the NP top surface. Estimated SPV values, determined by the amount of surface band bending, were similar in NPs and planar counterparts. This finding suggests that field effect passivation by the dielectric layer coating could help improve photovoltaic performance of nanostructure-based Si solar cells and that KPFM may be a useful tool for the investigation of surface electrical properties of Si nanostructures.

Most cancer cells need more glucose. Because they produce energy by fermentation, even though they exist in the presence of oxygen. Cancer cell can escape a poor environment like hypoxia and under nutrition condition. Considering this fact, It is deducible that hypoglycemia affect cancer metastasis. But the research about cancer metastasis has been limited to hypoxia condition until now. Interestingly, it was reported that O-GlcNAc modification on protein was increased under hypoglycemic condition. And it was thought that O-GlcNAcylation is related with EMT. In our study, we want to examine whether hypoglycemic condition can induce cancer metastasis and it is related to increased O-GlcNAc modification or not. So we focused on EMT to visualize cancer metastasis. We found that the amount of several EMT marker were changed under hypoglycemic condition in cancer cell. And it was mitigated by OGT knock down. These findings tell us that hypoglycemic condition can be closely connected with cancer metastasis via O-GlcNAclation. So we suggest possibilities that hypoglycemic condition induced EMT in cancer cell and it related with increased O-GlcNAc modification.
