Developing a Mindfulness Program for Filipino Children

Previous studies established that mindfulness is an effective strategy in promoting social and emotional learning and holistic development of children, which is vital to academic and life success. Thus, this study explored the development of a mindfulness program for preschool-aged children. The researcher developed and implemented a six-week mindfulness program called Alumana for 28 preschool children aged 4-6 years old. Results were analyzed through document analysis of the facilitator’s logs and thematic analysis of parents’ responses in open-ended interviews. Findings showed that the participants gradually transitioned from being hesitant during the first weeks of the mindfulness-based activities to being responsive and enthusiastic through various strategies towards the end of the program. The significance of incorporating children’s responses to make the program more developmentally appropriate and engaging for the children is highlighted in the study. The use of props and relatable activities is important to produce a more engaging program for young children. Findings also present the perceived benefits in learning and the holistic development of the children according to the participants’ parents and age-appropriate mindfulness program in a local context is applicable in preschool. Through this study, implementing a more mindfulness program in a local context could be further examined for young Filipino children.
Fatty Acid Modulation of Atherosclerosis by Peroxisome Proliferator- Activated Receptors

While atherosclerosis is a major killer, there is now concern that mortality from the disease will increase due to the rising incidence of type II diabetes. Because diet can potentially influence both diseases, it is important to elucidate the role of diet in the progression of atherosclerosis. In addition, the mechanisms involved in dietary-related alterations of the disease need to be defined to guide public health recommendations to reduce athero-sclerosis incidence and limiting unwanted side effects. Since diet is thought to play a role in atherosclerosis even without added complications due to type II diabetes, reducing the incidence of that metabolic disease will not be enough. While evidence is increasing that high intake of carbohydrate can lead to type II diabetes and atherosclerosis, the preponderance of existing evidence indicates that intake of specific fats as a major dietary causal factor. It has recently been hypothesized that a dietary fat link to atherosclerosis may depend partly on the activity of a transcriptional regulator, the peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPAR). Thusfar, PPAR $\alpha$, $\beta$/$\delta$ and ${\gamma}$, have been shown to play a major role in metabolism, inflammation, and cancer. Furthermore, PPAR may regulate specific processes associated with atherosclerosis such as triglyceride and low density lipoprotein (LDL) metabolism; the reverse cholesterol transport pathway; lipid accumulation within plaques; the local inflammatory response and plaque stability. Synthetic ligands for PPAR have been developed; however, natural ligands include specific fatty acids and their metabolites. Though the role of PPAR in atherosclerosis has been reported with respect to synthetic ligands, additional studies need to be done with established and possible natural ligands. In this review, we will focus on the relation of dietary fat to PPAR alteration of atherosclerosis.
Health Impacts of The Business Process Outsourcing Industry : Condom Use in Call Centers

The business process outsourcing industry is viewed as a major contributor in the Philippine economy although concerns have been raised regarding the health impacts, particularly the sexual behavior of its workers and the increasing number of Human Immunodeficiency Virus and/or Acute Immune Deficiency Syndrome cases, engendered by the culture of these firms. Using a multinomial logistic regression model on data gathered from a survey of call center agents in Metro Manila, this study provides an analysis of the factors that affect condom use in call centers. Results of this study show that risk awareness and social influence positively and significantly affect the choice to use condoms, although condom use among these workers is still at a level that can contribute to increased incidence of infections. Risky sexual behavior is prevalent among call center agents despite high awareness of the associated risks and the social acceptability of condom use.
ON NILPOTENCE INDICES OF SIGN PATTERNS

The work in this paper was motivated by [3], where Eschenbach and Li listed four 4 by 4 sign patterns, conjectured to be nilpotent sign patterns of nilpotence index at least 3. These sign patterns with no zero entries, called full sign patterns, are shown to be potentially nilpotent of nilpotence index 3. We also generalize these sign patterns of order 4 so that we provide classes of n by n sign patterns of nilpotence indices at least 3, if they are potentially nilpotent. Furthermore it is shown that if a full sign pattern A of order n has nilpotence index k with $2{\leq}k{\leq}n-1$, then sign pattern A has nilpotent realizations of nilpotence indices k, k + 1, $\ldots$, n. Hence, the four 4 by 4 sign patterns in [3, page 91] also allow nilpotent realizations of nilpotence index 4.

<P>In this work, nickel-rich, layered-structure LiNi0.65Co0.08Mn0.27O2 cathode materials were synthesized and compared with materials of the same overall composition, but with a concentration gradient throughout the particles: the Ni concentration is higher at the center of the particles and lower at surface, while the opposite is true for the Mn concentration. The co-precipitation synthesis parameters were optimized, with two different annealing protocols for the final products and the effect of chelating agent concentration during synthesis examined. The gradientmaterials provided superior capacity and rate capability than their respective non-gradient-materials, at normal operating potentials and temperatures, e.g. 30 degrees C up to 4.3 V vs. Li. The reasons for the improved discharge capacity of the gradient materials were explored through impedance spectroscopy and post-mortem characterization. The gradient structure evolution was examined via TEM and electron diffraction measurements of particle cross-sections. Prolonged cycling, even at elevated temperatures, did not change the initial concentration profiles determined by the synthesis. Additionally, long-term cycling experiments of the second-generation material electrodes vs. graphite electrodes in full cells were performed in order to explore the practical advantage of these novel materials.
