To develop a better model of isolated perfusedheart, a new aparatus of “coronary artery cannula-fixed-in-aortic tube” was developed for continuousnormothermic perfusion and compared to the Casalisapparatus with cold ischemia. Eight mongrel pigsw i t h t h e b o d y w e i g h t o f 1 8 t o 2 4 k g w e r e d i v i d e d h a l finto two groups.Al the continuous perfusion experimental heartsresumed a spontaneous heart beat and stabilizeddefibrilator or pacemaker, indicating no reperfusioninjury on the heart. Al the xperimental hearts did notshow fibrillation or stoped beating during the ntireexperiment, whereas the control hearts fibrillated. Twocontrol hearts toped beating, and only one of thetwo survived with the lp of pacemaker. Thecoronary systolic, diastolic, and mean presures weremore stable with low variation in the xperimentalhearts than the cold ischemic ontrol hearts. Theexperimental hearts consumed more oxygen than theAcording to these results, the continuous normothermicperfusion method by the new cannula, even thoughwith a short-period of hypothermic perfusion, providedbetter myocardial protection than the cold ischemia.
