Numerical performance assessment of Tuned Mass Dampers to mitigate traffic-induced vibrations of a steel box-girder bridge

Elyas Bayat,Meysam Bayat,Raheb Hafezzadeh 국제구조공학회 2021 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.78 No.2

In this paper, the effects of Tuned Mass dampers (TMDs) on the reduction of the vertical vibrations of a real horizontally curved steel box-girder bridge due to different traffic loads are numerically investigated. The performance of TMDs to reduce the bridge vibrations can be affected by the parameters such as dynamic characteristics of TMDs, the location of TMDs, the speed and weight of vehicles. In the first part of this study, the effects of mass ratio, damping percentage, frequency ratio, and location of TMDs on the performance of TMDs to decrease vertical vibrations of different sections of bridge deck are evaluated. In the second part, the performance of TMD is investigated for different speeds and weights of traffic loads. Results show that the mass ratio of TMDs is the more effective parameter in reducing imposed vertical vibration in comparison with the damping ratio. Furthermore, it is found that TMD is very sensitive to its tuned frequency, i.e., with a little deviation from a suitable frequency, the expected performance of TMD significantly decreased. TMDs have a positive and considerable performance at certain vehicle speeds and this performance declines when the weight of traffic loads is increased. Besides, the results reveal that the highest impact of TMD on the reduction of the vertical vibrations is when free vibrations occur for the bridge deck. In that case, maximum reductions of 24% and 59% are reported in the vertical acceleration of the bridge deck for the forced and free vibration amplitudes, respectively. The maximum reduction of 13% is also obtained for the maximum displacement of the bridge deck. The results are mainly related to the resonance condition.

Size-dependent free vibration and dynamic analyses of a sandwich microbeam based on higher-order sinusoidal shear deformation theory and strain gradient theory

        Mohammad Arefi,Elyas Mohammad-Rezaei Bidgoli,Ashraf M. Zenkour 국제구조공학회 2018 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.22 No.1

The governing equations of motion are derived for analysis of a sandwich microbeam in this paper. The sandwich microbeam is including an elastic micro-core and two piezoelectric micro-face-sheets. The microbeam is subjected to transverse loads and two-dimensional electric potential. Higher-order sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory is used for description of displacement field. To account size dependency in governing equations of motion, strain gradient theory is used to mention higher-order stress and strains. An analytical approach for simply-supported sandwich microbeam with short-circuited electric potential is proposed. The numerical results indicate that various types of parameters such as foundation and material length scales have significant effects on the free vibration responses and dynamic results. Investigation on the influence of material length scales indicates that increase of both dimensionless material length scale parameters leads to significant changes of vibration and dynamic responses of microbeam.

Novel High Step-Up DC/DC Converter Structure Using a Coupled Inductor with Minimal Voltage Stress on the Main Switch

        Majid Moradzadeh,Sajjad Hamkari,Elyas Zamiri,Reza Barzegarkhoo 전력전자학회 2016 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.16 No.6

A high-step-up DC/DC converter for renewable energy systems is proposed. The proposed structure provides high voltage gain by using a coupled inductor without the need for high duty cycles and high turn ratios. The voltage gain is increased through capacitor-charging techniques. In the proposed converter, the energy of the leakage inductors of the coupled inductor is reused. This feature reduces the stress on the switch. Therefore, a switch with low ON-state resistance can be used in the proposed converter to reduce losses and increase efficiency. The main switch is placed in series with the source. Therefore, the converter can control the energy flow from the source to the load. The operating principle is discussed in detail, and a steady state analysis of the proposed converter is conducted. The performance of the proposed converter is verified by experimental results.

A Cascaded Modular Multilevel Inverter Topology Using Novel Series Basic Units with a Reduced Number of Power Electronic Elements

        Reza Barzegarkhoo,Naser Vosoughi,Elyas Zamiri,Hossein Madadi Kojabadi,Liuchen Chang 전력전자학회 2016 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.16 No.6

In this study, a new type of cascaded modular multilevel inverters (CMMLIs) is presented which is able to produce a considerable number of output voltage levels with a reasonable number of components. Accordingly, each series stage of the proposed CMMLI is comprised of two same basic units that are connected with each other through two unidirectional power switches without aiming any of the full H-bridge cells. In addition, since the potentiality for generating a higher number of output voltage levels in CMMLIs hinges on the magnitude of the dc voltage sources used in each series unit, in the rest of this paper, four different algorithms for determining an appropriate value for the dc sources’ magnitude are also presented. In the following, a comprehensive topological analysis between some CMMLI structures reported in the literature and proposed structure along with several simulation and experimental results will be also given to validate the lucrative benefits and viability of the proposed topology.

A Novel Switched Capacitor High Step-up dc/dc Converter Using a Coupled Inductor with its Generalized Structure

        Sajjad Hamkari,Majid Moradzadeh,Elyas Zamiri,Mehdi Nasiri,Seyed Hossein Hosseini 전력전자학회 2017 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.17 No.3

In this study a new high step-up dc-dc converter is presented. The operation of the proposed converter is based on the capacitor switching and coupled inductor with a single active power switch in its structure. A passive voltage clamp circuit with two capacitors and two diodes is used in the proposed converter for elevating the converter's voltage gain with the recovered energy of the leakage inductor, and for lowering the voltage stress on the power switch. A switch with a low (on) DS R can be adopted to reduce conduction losses. In the generalized mode of the proposed converter, to reach a desired voltage gain, capacitor stages with parallel charge and series discharge techniques are extended from both sides of secondary side of the coupled inductor. The proposed converter has the ability to alleviate the reverse recovery problem of diodes with circuit parameters. The operating principle and steady-states analyses are discussed in detail. A 40W prototype of the proposed converter is implemented in the laboratory to verify its operation.

NUMERICAL EXPERIMENTS OF THE LEGENDRE POLYNOMIAL BY GENERALIZED DIFFERENTIAL TRANSFORM METHOD FOR SOLVING THE LAPLACE EQUATION

Amoupour, Ebrahim,Toroqi, Elyas Arsanjani,Najafi, Hashem Saberi Korean Mathematical Society 2018 대한수학회논문집 Vol.33 No.2

Finding a solution for the Legendre equation is difficult. Especially if it is as a part of the Laplace equation solving in the electric fields. In this paper, first a problem of the generalized differential transform method (GDTM) is solved by the Sturm-Liouville equation, then the Legendre equation is solved by using it. To continue, the approximate solution is compared with the nth-degree Legendre polynomial for obtaining the inner and outer potential of a sphere. This approximate is more accurate than the previous solutions, and is closer to an ideal potential in the intervals.

Soil hydrophysical degradation associated with forest operations

        Ehsan Abdi,Mostafa Moghadamirad,Elyas Hayati,Dirk Jaeger 한국산림과학회 2017 Forest Science And Technology Vol.13 No.4

Skid trails in the Hyrcanian forest of northern Iran are important for moving wood to log landings; however, they can cause soil compaction and alter water infiltration. This research therefore presents an analysis of the impact of ground-based skidding on soil hydrophysical properties in Kuhmiyan forest located in the Hyrcanian forest. Soil infiltration, bulk density, and soil resistance to penetration have been studied at three different depths of soil along the skid trails. Three sampling locations were considered: wheel ruts, center of skid trails, and undisturbed forest (control). The results showed that the total infiltration rate, and also the instantaneous infiltration rate, were significantly higher in the control treatment. The results also showed an increase of 57% and 31% for the soil bulk density at wheel ruts and centers of skid trails compared to the control. Furthermore, there was a significant difference between soil resistance in the control and the other two treatments, with wheel ruts having the highest resistance. According to the results, there was a strong negative correlation between infiltration and soil resistance (r = –0.94), and between infiltration and bulk density (r = – 0.93). Using a protective layer of slash and logging debris and residual on skid trails can be highly recommended to moderate soil compaction and mitigate the destructive impact of logging equipment.

The Effect of Garlic (Allium sativum L) Supplementation on Circulating Adiponectin: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

        ( Shima Sharifi ),( Sepide Talebi ),( Elyas Nattagh-eshtivani ),( Yasaman Amiri ),( Gholamreza Askari ) 한국임상영양학회 2021 Clinical Nutrition Research Vol.10 No.3

Our aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effect of garlic on serum adiponectin levels. We searched Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Cochrane Library to databases up to January 2021. RCTs investigating the effects of garlic on serum adiponectin levels in adult participants were included. The change in serum adiponectin levels was estimated using weighted mean differences (WMD) and standard deviations (SD). The random effects model was used to provide a summary of mean estimates and their SDs. Out of 386 records, 6 trials with 8 arms treatment which enrolled 266 subjects were included. Garlic supplementation resulted in a non-significant increase in adiponectin concentrations when compared to placebo, according to the pooled data (WMD, 0.27 Hedges' g; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.07, 0.62; p = 0.124). Greater effects on adiponectin were observed in trials with supplementation dose less than 1.5 gram per day (WMD, 0.71 Hedges' g; 95% CI, -0.01, 1.43; p = 0.600) and in trials with female subset (WMD, 0.62 Hedges' g; 95% CI, -0.96, 2.21; p = 0.441). Garlic boosts adiponectin levels in general. However, due to different target population, various units for reporting adiponectin level and few eligible studies in final analysis, more research is needed to get a firm conclusion about the influence of garlic on adiponectin levels.
