Rhomboid intercostal and subserratus plane block -a case series-

        Elsharkawy Hesham,Hamadnalla Hassan,Altinpulluk Ece Yamak,Gabriel Rodney A. 대한마취통증의학회 2020 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.73 No.6

Background: The rhomboid intercostal and subserratus plane (RISS) block is a new interfascial block technique that has shown promising results for abdominal and thoracic surgeries. Our objective was to describe the improved analgesia and dermatomal coverage in patients who received bilateral RISS blocks after a major abdominal surgery.Case: Twenty-one patients who underwent abdominal surgery received the rhomboid intercostal component of the block at the T5 to T6 levels, and the subserratus component block was performed at the T6 to T9 levels. The RISS blocks provided effective postoperative analgesia. There was a variation in the dermatomal coverage ranging from T3 to T12. Patients reported a high satisfaction rate from pain management. Conclusions: The RISS block in abdominal surgery seems to have an important role in perioperative pain management, complementing the multimodal analgesic regimen. To determine the efficacy of the RISS block for abdominal surgery, we need further randomized control trials.

Induction of Systemic Resistance against Cucumber mosaic virus in Arabidopsis thaliana by Trichoderma asperellum SKT-1

Elsharkawy, Mohsen Mohamed,Shimizu, Masafumi,Takahashi, Hideki,Ozaki, Kouichi,Hyakumachi, Mitsuro The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2013 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.29 No.2

Trichoderma asperellum SKT-1 is a microbial pesticide that is very effective against various diseases. Our study was undertaken to evaluate T. asperellum SKT-1 for induction of resistance against yellow strain of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV-Y) in Arabidopsis plants. Disease severity was rated at 2 weeks post inoculation (WPI). CMV titre in Arabidopsis leaves was determined by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) at 2 WPI. Our results demonstrated that among all Arabidopsis plants treated with barley grain inoculum (BGI) of SKT-1 NahG and npr1 plants showed no significant reduction in disease severity and CMV titre as compared with control plants. In contrast, disease severity and CMV titre were significantly reduced in all Arabidopsis plants treated with culture filtrate (CF) of SKT-1 as compared with control plants. RT-PCR results showed increased expression levels of SA-inducible genes, but not JA/ET-inducible genes, in leaves of BGI treated plants. Moreover, expression levels of SA- and JA/ET-inducible genes were increased in leaves of CF treated plants. In conclusion, BGI treatment induced systemic resistance against CMV through SA signaling cascade in Arabidopsis plants. While, treatment with CF of SKT-1 mediated the expression of a majority of the various pathogen related genes, which led to the increased defense mechanism against CMV infection.

      • Build a Real-Time Flight Control Algorithm for the Lighter than Air Indoor Robot Using PX4 Autopilots Support from UAV Toolbox

        Ahmed Elsharkawy,Khawar Naheem,Mun Sang Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2021 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2021 No.10

With the widespread use of robots, there is a need to develop new designs that are suitable for special applications. These designs can differ mechanically introducing new dynamic characteristics not found in common designs. For these designs, developing adequate control algorithms that run in real-time is considered to be challenging, especially for those who do not have sufficient experience dealing with low-level embedded software. We seek to show the flexibility offered by using MathWorks provided PX4 autopilot support to build customized real-time control flight and vehicle management algorithms. We show the pipeline of autopilot"s algorithm design to stably fly an in-house developed lighter than air indoor robot (LAIDR). In our study, we deal with highly nonlinear problems to fly LAIDR due to the properties of the physical body. However, the “PX4 autopilot support for UAV toolbox” allows dealing with these challenges smoothly through developing the algorithm in a modular but integrated form. We evaluated LAIDR by broadcasting live clips of an indoor (theater) event. The results show how efficient LAIDR performs to achieve different shooting angles (e.g., sky view) while following the desired flying path.

      • An affordable indoor reference positioning system for lighter-than-air robot navigation

        Khawar Naheem,Ahmed Elsharkawy,Mun Sang Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2021 제어로봇시스템학회 국내학술대회 논문집 Vol.2021 No.6

The evaluation of a flying vehicle localization during navigation task demands an accurate reference system when the tracked body is large and operational space is wider than room size. Highly accurate reference positioning systems are usually expensive, complex to handle, suffer from short range, and require precise initial calibration. In this paper, a simple, affordable, and accurate solution to track the 3D reference position of a lighter than air (balloon) robot in wide indoor spaces is presented. To track our flying robot in 3D, a 2D laser sensor was installed offboard providing global positioning information while a 1D laser sensor was installed onboard to detect the robot height locally. The height information could be directly acquired from 1D laser sensor without any further processing however a special algorithm is needed to extract the position from 2D laser sensor. In this special algorithm, first the unwanted scanned data outside the operation area is removed then a radial fitting technique is applied to find the robot’s position. At the end, an experiment is performed to show the validity of described algorithm with acceptable position accuracy under 7 cm.

      • 24/7 Elderly Guard Robot: Emergency Detecting, Reacting, and Reporting

        Deok-won Lee,Ahmed Elsharkawy,Kooksung Jun,Yun-dong Lee,SeungJun Kim,Mun Sang Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2021 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2021 No.10

As the number of elderly persons increases, greater attention must be given to how they or their caregivers deal with emergency situations. This paper describes an automated tracking, fall detection, and emergency recovery system for elderly persons, and shows that efficient a Socially Assistive Robot (SAR) can resolve emergency situations and abnormal behaviors for at-risk populations. Our assistant robot uses position data provided by Ultra-WideBand (UWB) wireless network and motion sensor information to detect potentially dangerous situations for elderly persons. In this context, a deep neural network–based double-check method has been developed to detect and confirm fall situation with high accuracy using in-house developed sensory hardware. We then simulated four typical emergency scenarios using SILBOT-3 robot. Interaction scenarios were demonstrated to 28 caregivers, who were then invited to complete a short questionnaire regarding benefits and improvements for our system. Caregivers responded positively to our system’s performance and stated that they would accept an assistant robot that could notify them quickly about a dangerous situation or possibly resolve the situation autonomously.

      • Tracking Feasibility of UWB Positioning System for Lighter-than-Air Indoor Robot Navigation

        Khawar Naheem,Ahmed Elsharkawy,Mun Sang Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2021 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2021 No.10

Due to increasing use of flying robots indoors, it is important to safely navigate them without collision. The basic necessity for safe navigation is to first locate these flying robots. For this sake, recently, ultra-wideband (UWB) technology caught attention because of its low price, long range, and multi-agent tracking. This paper presents the tracking feasibility of UWB positioning system for a lighter-than-air indoor robot (LAIDR) navigation application. At beginning, the LAIDR’s hardware is described including the actuating mechanism and followed up by UWB sensors’ infrastructure. After that, the three layers’ data framework is presented to share the external sensory data for LAIDR’s indoor navigation task. Finally, a real-time experiment comprised of a line navigation is conducted to evaluate tracking feasibility of UWB positioning system for LAIDR navigation. Where a laser scanner is adopted as a reference instrument for comparative validation. The comparative results confirm that UWB positioning system is a feasible indoor tracking option with acceptable accuracy for performing LAIDR navigation inside a wider space.

Control of Root Rot and Wilt Diseases of Roselle under Field Conditions

        ( Naglaa Hassan ),( Mohsen Mohamed Elsharkawy ),( Masafumi Shimizu ),( Mitsuro Hyakumachi ) 한국균학회 2014 Mycobiology Vol.42 No.4

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is one of the most important medicinal crops in many parts of the world. In this study, the effects of microelements, antioxidants, and bioagents on Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, and Macrophomina phaseolina, the causal pathogens of root rot and wilt diseases in roselle, were examined under field conditions. Preliminary studies were carried out in vitro in order to select the most effective members to be used in field control trials. Our results showed that microelements (copper and manganese), antioxidants (salicylic acid, ascorbic acid, and EDTA), a fungicide (Dithane M45) and biological control agents (Trichoderma harzianum and Bacillus subtilis) were significantly reduced the linear growth of the causal pathogens. Additionally, application of the previous microelements, antioxidants, a fungicide and biological control agents significantly reduced disease incidence of root rot and wilt diseases under field conditions. Copper, salicylic acid, and T. harzianum showed the best results in this respect. In conclusion, microelements, antioxidants, and biocontrol agents could be used as alternative strategies to fungicides for controlling root rot and wilt diseases in roselle.
