Parkinson’s disease (PD), the second common neurodegenerative disease, is characterized by theloss of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Because of L-dopa’s side effects, newtherapeutic methods were considered such as stem cells for PD treatment. The major challengefacing stem cell therapy following transplantations is their peripheral sequestration anddecreased survival. Thus, the ability of erythropoietin (EPO) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) toenhance mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) proliferation and therapeutic efficiency for alleviatingrotenone-induced PD was investigated. Therefore, we compared the influence of stem cellpreconditioning with erythropoietin versus LLLT on MSCs’ homing ability and the chances ofsurvival. Forty-eight male Swiss mice were included in the in vivo protocol and ten in the invitro work. The mice in the in vivo study were divided randomly into six groups (8 in each);group I; control group and group II; induced PD (untreated) group, group III; L-dopa, group IV;MSCs, group V; EPO-activated MSCs and group VI; laser-activated MSCs. Treatment with MSCs(either preconditioned or not) improved these neurological features by restoring the normalbalance between glutamate and GABA neurotransmitters, and dopamine as well as increasedtyrosine hydroxylase levels. Stem cell therapy decreased oxidative stress, miRNA-155 levels,enhanced neuronal architecture in SN, and decreased the number of apoptotic cells. LLLTenhanced MSC expression of integrin β1 which was reflected in the homing of PKH26-labelledMSCs into corpus striatum and SN. Thus, the optimum results were achieved with laseractivatedMSCs.
Synthesis of Certain 6-(Arylthio)uracils and Related Derivatives as Potential Antiviral Agents

New series of 6-(arylthio)uracils, 6-(4-substituted-1-piperazinyl)uracils, 2,4,5-trioxo-1H,3H-benzothiopyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidine and 5-aryl-2,4-dioxo-1H,3H-pyrimido[5,4-f]benzo[1,4]thiazepines have been prepared and screened for their in vitro activity against herpes simplex-1 virus (HSV-1) and human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1). The in vitro cytotoxic activity was also evaluated. The results of biological testing revealed that compound 5b showed marginal activity against HSV-1, while compounds 5b and 5f exhibited marginal activity against HIV-1. The rest of the tested compounds were found devoid of antiviral activity against both HSV-1 and HIV-1.

We aimed to investigate any association between hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in the view of cytokines that control inflammation/angiogenesis and their correlation with certain CD markers. NHL patients with or without HCV infection were studied. CD5, CD30, CD3, CD20 and CD45 were immunohistochemically evaluated. Plasma levels of vascular endothelial and platelet derived growth factors (VEGF, and PDGF), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-${\alpha}$), transforming growth factor (TGF-${\beta}$), interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, IL-4, IL-12 and interferon gamma (IFN-${\gamma}$) were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). HCV+ve NHL patients showed a significant reduction in VEGF, PDGF, IFN-${\gamma}$, CD5 and CD45 and a significant increase in IL-12 and IL-8. In conclusion, there was a significant change in cytokine secretion and expression of CD markers in HCV+ve NHL patients. Based on our results, HCV infection in NHL patients requires more in-depth investigations to explore any role in lymphoma progression.

The present study concerned with the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides (238U, 234U, 230Th, 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and, 235U) in ten sedimentary rock samples collected from fault zone, Gabal Um Hamd, southwestern Sinai, Egypt. These samples were investigated to study their behavior during a part of geologic time. The activity concentrations were measured using γ-ray spectrometry (HPGe detector). The investigated samples were analyzed for major oxides using the XRF technique. The results demonstrated high average activity concentrations of 238U, 234U, 230Th, 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and, 235U than the worldwide average values as reported by UNSCEAR 2008. Theil diagram showed that there are accumulation and leaching of uranium in some samples in the two sides of the fault zone. It is noticed that the ages of uranium depositions for the samples collected from the downthrown of the fault zone vary from 121.5 to 440.1 ky, while for the sample collected from the upthrown of the fault is 210.9 ky. The 230Th/232Th activity ratios range between 4.55 and 91.04 for downthrown samples and between 4.75 and 6.05 for upthrown samples which are smaller than 20 except for two samples, indicating a contamination of the samples by detrital 230Th. After subtraction of the detrital 230Th, the corrected ages for downthrown samples vary from 119.1 to 231.7 ky while for upthrown samples vary from 164.4 to 390 ky
Synthesis of certain thiaxanthones as potential schistosomicidal agents

Twenty nine substituted thiaxanthone derivatives were synthesized for schistosomicidal evaluation. The compounds, 1-morpholino-4-methyl-6-nitrothiaxanthone and 1-(2-diethyl-aminoethyl-amino)-4 methyl-6-nitrothiaxanthone dipicrate were found to possess promising schistosomicidal activity against Schistosoma mansoni in mice.

A convenient route is reported for the synthesis of certain series of 4H-thieno[2,3-b][1]benzothiopyran-4-ones, carrying various substituents at position 2 such as arylazomethines (7,8), thiazolidin-4-ones (9-13), ${\alpha},\;{\beta}-unsaturated$ ketones (16,17), 2-pyridones (19-23), tetrahydrothiophen-4-ones (24,28), and nitroalkenes (29,30), as potential schistosomicidal or antihistaminic agents.

From the phenolic profile of Acacia pennata L. leaves hydromethanolic extract, nine flavonoids were tentatively character- ized (liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry), of which Kaempferol 3,7-di-O-hexoside, Apigenin 6,8-di-C-hexoside, Luteolin-6-C-pentoside-8-C-hexoside, Apigenin-6-C-hexoside-8-C-pentoside and Apigenin-6-C-pento- side-8-C-hexoside were detected for the first time from the plant. Three doses of the plant extract (12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg bw/d, four weeks treatment) were used to assess its protective effect against acetominophen induced genotoxicity in hepatic cells of male rats (2 g/kg bw twice per week). A. pennata extract and Acetominophen treated animal groups attenuated DNA damage rates (Comet assay) by 5.6, 6.2 and 6.4% for the three doses, respectively, compared with the acetaminophen treated and untreated groups by 21.2% and 5.8%, respectively. It also decreased DNA fragmentation, significantly down-regulate the expression of p53 tumour suppressor gene and mdr1b multidrug resistance gene [real-time PCR (qPCR)] and ROS genera- tion rates induced by Acetaminophen by 715.4, 453.8 and 376.9% in rats in a dose dependant effect. The results highlighted the DNA protection potential of A. pennata phytoconstituents from drug abuse harmful effects.
