A Study on a Displacement Amplifier for the Depth Scan of 3D Confocal Endomicroscope

Three-dimensional confocal fluorescence endomicroscopy (3D CFE) is getting attention as a minimally invasive optical diagnostic technique which may replace the section biopsy during a surgery. The 3D CFE has a piezo actuator that can search in the depth direction. However, due to the small actuation of the piezo actuator, it needs to have longer piezo actuation. Here, this study developed a fiber-optic scanning 3D CFE with a displacement amplifier to increase the depth scan range with a short piezo actuator. The newly devised displacement amplifier allows longer depth scan in spite of relatively short actuator lengths. Its kinematic analysis was achieved. Design and analysis of the displacement amplifier have been performed by a FEM software (ANSYS). Also, its parts were successfully assembled to build the displacement amplifier. And its amplification is demonstrated by measuring amplification of the actuator displacement by a capacitive sensor. We hope that the displacement amplifier can be applied to 3D CFE as a head-mount type with its piezo actuator length.
