High performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of Lidamidine-HCI in the antidiarrheal preparations was developed Lidamidine-HCI was dissolved in methanol and separated on an octadecylsilane column (??u-Bondapak C_18) with a mixture of methanol and water (80 : 20) as a mobile phase and detected at 254nm. The detection limit was 5-15㎍ and rate of the recoveries from model preparations was 97.58%.

<P>Poloxamer-modified liposomes (PMLs) were prepared using poloxamers (P85 and F68) by the thin-film hydration method for overcoming the multidrug resistance and thereby enhancing the intracellular uptake of specific substrates of P-gp, rhodamine 123 (R123). The prepared liposomes, plain liposomes (PLs) and PMLs, were characterized by particle size, zeta potential and drug entrapment efficiency, and assessed by <I>in ?vitro</I> cellular uptake using KB and KBV20C (P-gp over-expression cell line) cells. The transmission electron microscopy study revealed the spherical shape of the prepared liposomes. No significant difference was observed between the PMLs and liposome without poloxamer (PLs) in the particle size (∼??60 ??nm) and zeta potential (∼??minus;??5 ??mV). The <I>in ?vitro</I> cellular uptake study showed that P85-modified liposomes (PML-P85) significantly increased the internalization of R123 in MDR tumour cells. Our results showed that PML-P85 could be an effective carrier for anticancer drugs in MDR cancer therapy.</P>

As more experience with computed tomography(C.T) is acquired, it is becoming apparent that differential diagnosis based on C.T appearances can be difficult. Many different pathologic processes can have similar enhancement patterns. We present 10 patients who underwent operation under the impression of brain tumor by C.T and angiogram but proved to have non-neoplastic lesions. The importance of careful evaluation of the history before offering a final opinion based on the C.T findings cannot be overemphasized. The clinician must be aware of the limitations and pitfalls associated with the computed tomography.

Four cases of cryptococcal meningitis were experienced in Keimyung University Hospital during 11 years periods. These patients were one pregnant woman, one man who had liver cirrosis and diabetes mellitus and two healthy men. After admission, all four patients were treated with antituberculous agent under the impression of tuberculous meningitis, but no clinical improvement was achieved. Later, Crytococcus neoformans was identified in CSF by India ink preparation or Sabouraud media culture, after then one patient was treated with combination of amphotericin B and 5-fluorocytosine and achieved much clinical and laboratory improvement. Unfortunately other three patients were not followed. The authors experienced four cases of crytococcal meningitis and herein presenting our experience and literature were reviewed.

Microemulsion-based Hydrogel Formulation of Itraconazole for Topical Delivery

The present study was aimed at preparing microemulsion-based hydrogel (MBH) for the skin delivery of itraconazole. Microemulsion prepared with Transcutol as a surfactant, benzyl alcohol as an oil and the mixture of ethanol and phasphatidyl choline (3:2) as a cosurfactant were characterized by solubility, phase diagram, particle size. MBHs were prepared using 0.7 % of xanthan gum (F1-1) or carbopol 940 (F1-2) as gelling agents and characterized by viscosity studies. The in vitro permeation data obtained by using the Franz diffusion cells and hairless mouse skin showed that the optimized microemulsion (F1) consisting of itraconazole (1% w/w), benzyl alcohol (10% w/w), Transcutol (10% w/w) and the mixture of ethanol and phospahtidylcholine (3:2) (10% w/w) and water (49% w/w) showed significant difference in the flux (${\sim}1{\mu}g/cm^2/h$) with their corresponding MBHs (0.25-0.64 ${\mu}g/cm^2/h$). However, the in vitro skin drug content showed no significant difference between F1 and F1-1, while F1-2 showed significantly low skin drug content. The effect of the amount of drug loading (0.02, 1 and 1.5% w/w) on the optimized MBH (F1-2) showed that the permeation and skin drug content increased with higher drug loading (1.5%). The in vivo study of the optimized MBH (F1-2 with1.5% w/w drug loading) showed that this formulation could be used as a potential topical formulation for itraconazole.

A case of histologically proved primary reticulum cell sarcoma is presented. A female patient with headache and left hemiplegia was proved to have reticulum cell sarcoma after surgery. The tumor was single in the frontal cortex and showed peculiar contrast enhancement pattern on computed tomogram. Near-total extirpation was verified by post-operative CT.

An intensive aging study for the forward resistive plate chambers (RPCs) was performed by using a 200 mCi 137Cs gamma-ray source. For the systematic aging study, four double-gap RPCs, 40 £ 40 cm2, were manufactured and tested for cosmic muons and the gamma rays irradiated from the source. The aging of the RPC gap is expected to be proportional to the integrated avalanche charge per unit area of the RPC. In this paper, a few diagnostic methods to observe aging phenomena are discussed, and the test result for a gamma irradiation of 150 days are presented. The integrated avalanche charge per unit area induced by the gamma rays in the RPC gap was 0.23 C/cm2/gap on average, which is equivalent to approximately 12 years of Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) RPC operation.
