FBG(Fiber Bragg grating) sensor, which is one of the fiber optic sensors for the application of smart structures, can not only measure one specific point but also multiple points by multiplexing techniques. We have proposed a novel multiplexing technique of FBG sensor by the intensity modulation of light source. This technique is applicable to WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technique and number of sensors in this system can be increased by using this technique with WDM technique

The electrophoretic patterns of hemoglobin, plasma protein, lactate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase from eight avian blood have been investigated with the aid of cellulose acetate electrophoresis. The electrophoretic comparisons demonstrate that the species-specificity does not seem to be reflected in the patterns of lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase and hemoglobin but in those of plasma protein.
Triple-layer appearance of Brodmann area 4 at thin-section double inversion-recovery MR imaging.

<P>PURPOSE: To investigate whether thin-section axial double inversion-recovery (DIR) brain magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at 3.0 T can help distinguish the primary motor cortex (PMC), or Brodmann area 4, from other selected cortical regions, including the primary sensory cortex (PSC), or Brodmann areas 1-3, on the basis of the presence of a 'triple-layer' appearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study was approved by the institutional review board; informed consent was obtained from patients. This study included 191 patients (94 female, age range, 5-80 years; 97 male, age range, 5-76 years) with normal findings at 3.0-T MR imaging. The presence or absence of a triple-layer appearance within selected cortical regions on DIR images was graded independently by two neuroradiologists as definitely present (grade 2), probably present (grade 1), or definitely absent (grade 0). Ten additional patients with tumors underwent DIR imaging and intraoperative cortical mapping for further validation of the PMC. A myelin-stained brain specimen image in a patient not imaged with DIR was correlated with a representative set of DIR images. RESULTS: A triple-layer appearance was found in the PMC bilaterally in 184 of 191 patients; grade 0 was assigned in only seven patients, who were all younger than 10 years. Grades were significantly lower in patients younger than 10 years than in others (P < .0001) but were not significantly different between older age groups (P > .0018). Interobserver agreement was excellent (weighted kappa = 0.843). The PMC determined on DIR images was confirmed with cortical mapping in all 10 patients with tumors. Triple-layer appearance was not present in the other cortical regions examined, including the PSC (P < .01). The triple-layer appearance on DIR images corresponded to the myelin band within the PMC present on the myelin-stained specimen image. CONCLUSION: A triple-layer appearance was found in the PMC at thin-section 3.0-T DIR imaging but not in other examined brain regions and therefore might be useful as an adjunct sign for identification of motor regions.</P>

<P>A 63-year-old woman complained of a growing neck mass. Sonography revealed a solid and cystic mass in the right thyroid lobe. Color Doppler study and computed tomography revealed anechoic cystic portions within the thyroid nodule to be a pseudoaneurysm arising from the right inferior thyroid artery. The only identifiable risk factor was a past thyroid needle biopsy performed approximately 5 years previously according to the patient's recollection. Right lobectomy was performed and the pseudoaneurysm was treated without complication.</P>

<P><B>Objective</B></P><P>Many diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies of the corpus callosum (CC) have been performed with a relatively thick slice thickness in the axial plane, which may result in underestimating the fractional anisotropy (FA) of the CC due to a partial volume effect. We hypothesized that the FA of the CC can be more accurately measured by using mid-sagittal DTI. We compared the FA values of the CC between the axial and mid-sagittal DTI.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>Fourteen healthy volunteers underwent MRI at 3.0 T. DTI was performed in both the mid-sagittal and axial planes. One 5-mm mid-sagittal image and twenty-five 2-mm axial images were obtained for the CC. The five regions of interest (ROIs) that included the prefrontal (I), premotor and supplementary motor (II), motor (III), sensory (IV) and parietal, temporal and occipital regions (V) were drawn along the border of the CC on each sagittal FA map. The FA values obtained from each region were compared between the two sagittal maps.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The FA values of all the regions, except for region V, were significantly increased on the mid-sagittal imaging. The FA values in region IV were significantly underestimated on the mid-sagittal image from the axial imaging, compared with those in the regions I and V (<I>p</I> = 0.037 and <I>p</I> = 0.001, respectively).</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>The FA values of the CC were significantly higher on the mid-sagittal DTI than those on the axial DTI in regions I-IV, and particularly in the region IV. Mid-sagittal DTI may provide more accurate FA values of the CC than can the axial DTI, and mid-sagittal DTI may be more desirable for studies that compare between patients and healthy subjects.</P>
Signal Integrity Improvements of a MEMS Probe Card Using Back-Drilling and Equalizing Techniques

<P>This paper characterizes the electrical performance of a probe card that is currently used for the test of memory devices operating at 300 MHz. The large printed circuit board assembly of the probe card has been found to consume 70% of the total signal transmission loss. We propose a simultaneous application of the back-drilling and the equalization techniques that greatly improve the signal integrity (SI) by reduction of the insertion loss and by planarization of the frequency response, respectively. These techniques are very simple and easy to be implemented by the numerical control of the drilling equipment and the surface mount technology. The Δ 3-dB bandwidth has greatly been improved from 0.66 GHz of the conventional probe card to 2.46 GHz after both of the equalization and the back-drilling. We also achieved 53% reductions of the transition times (Tr/Tf) and 51% improvement of the peak-to-peak jitter. We expect the simultaneous application of the back-drilling and the equalization be effectively used for further improvements of current wafer-level probe card performance.</P>

Juvenile polyps are the most common types of polyps in children, and patients usually present with lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding as the predominant symptom. These lesions, which are referred to as hamartomas, usually measure approximately 2 cm in size and are benign tumors located mainly in the rectum and sigmoid colon. The most common symptom of a juvenile polyp is mild intermittent rectal bleeding. It is rare for anemic patients because the amount of blood loss is small and often not diagnosed immediately. We present the case of a 6-year-old girl with a juvenile polyp in the distal transverse colon, who developed hypovolemic shock due to massive lower GI bleeding. Pediatricians must perform colonoscopy for thorough evaluation of polyps, because their location and size can vary and they can cause massive bleeding.

<P>Arazyme is a metalloprotease released by Aranicola proteolyticus that was shown to inhibit cytokine release in HaCaT and endothelial cells. However, the regulatory effects of arazyme in atopic dermatitis remain to be fully understood. In the present study, the anti?inflammatory effects of arazyme in BALB/c and Nc/Nga mice induced with 2,4?dinitrochlrobenzene (DNCB) were investigated. BALB/c mice were sensitized with DNCB and were subsequently administered arazyme for 4 weeks either orally, dorsally or orally/dorsally. Arazyme administration significantly reduced epidermal thickening and infiltration of inflammatory cells into the dermis compared with the DNCB group. However, serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels were not altered by arazyme treatment. Additionally, the level of secretion of interleukins (IL)?4, ?5 and ?13 in the splenocytes of BALB/c mice was elevated following stimulation with concanavalin A, while the increase of IL?4 and IL?13 was inhibited by arazyme. Administration of arazyme (25 mg/kg in phosphate?buffered saline) to Nc/Nga mice that had been sensitized with DNCB for 6 weeks reduced the skin severity score compared with that in the DNCB group and inhibited the histological manifestations of atopic dermatitis?like skin lesions. In addition, the serum IgE levels were reduced in the arazyme?treated NC/Nga mice relative to the DNCB group. Collectively, these results indicated that arazyme attenuates the development of atopic dermatitis?like lesions via lowering the levels of IgE and inflammatory cytokines. The results of the present study will aid in the development of effective therapeutic strategies for the treatment of allergic diseases, including atopic dermatitis.</P>
