        OGLE-2005-BLG-018: CHARACTERIZATION OF FULL PHYSICAL AND ORBITAL PARAMETERS OF A GRAVITATIONAL BINARY LENS

        <P>We present the result of the analysis of the gravitational binary-lensing event OGLE-2005-BLG-018. The light curve of the event is characterized by two adjacent strong features and a single weak feature separated from the strong features. The light curve exhibits noticeable deviations from the best-fit model based on standard binary parameters. To explain the deviation, we test models including various higher-order effects of the motions of the observer, source, and lens. From this, we find that it is necessary to account for the orbital motion of the lens in describing the light curve. From modeling the light curve considering the parallax effect and Keplerian orbital motion, we are able to not only measure the physical parameters but also to find a complete orbital solution of the lens system. It is found that the event was produced by a binary lens located in the Galactic bulge with a distance of 6.7 +/- 0.3 kpc from the Earth. The individual lens components with masses 0.9 +/- 0.3 M-circle dot and 0.5 +/- 0.1 M-circle dot are separated with a semi-major axis of a = 2.5 +/- 1.0 AU and orbiting each other with a period P = 3.1 +/- 1.3 yr. This event demonstrates that it is possible to extract detailed information about binary lens systems from well-resolved lensing light curves.</P>

        The purpose of this study was to analyze the image of stripe pattern expressed in contemporary fashion. For this research, the fashion magazines, Dong-a TV, Internet sites were used as references. In the middle age, the use of stripe pattern was banned because it was regarded as the pattern of the devil in Europe. But nowadays the stripe pattern plays the role of symbolizing health, youth, and personality. The stripe pattern is being used in various kinds of patterns like alternate stripe, block stripe, candy stripe, chalk stripe, herringbone stripe, hombre stripe, pekin stripe, pin stripe, rope stripe, sports stripe, and stitch stripe. The stripe patterns were expressed by the techniques of weaving, printing, sewing, knitting, and embroidery. The image of stripe pattern appeared during 2006 S/S∼2008 S/S collections could be classified into five images of modern, mannish, elegant, exotic, and sporty image.

      • Effect of sintered microporous coating at the evaporator on the thermal performance of a two-phase closed thermosyphon

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, the effects of sintered microporous coating at the evaporator on the thermal performance of a two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT) are experimentally investigated using distilled water as a working fluid. The TPCT comprises evaporator, adiabatic, and condenser sections, which have an inner diameter of 25 mm and lengths of 300, 300, and 325 mm, respectively. Copper microparticles are sintered on the inner surface of the evaporator to form a 500-μm-thick microporous structure. Boiling and condensation heat transfer coefficients on the microporous coated TPCT are obtained at filling ratios (FRs) ranging from 0.25 to 1.0 and inclination angles ranging from 90° to 5°. The boiling heat transfer coefficient at the microporous coated evaporator is enhanced owing to an increase in the number of nucleation sites and thin film evaporation in the liquid film formed by capillary force through the porous structure, especially at a low FR. The condensation heat transfer is also affected by the microporous coated evaporator due to the increased amount of vapor generation at the low FR. The overall thermal resistance of the microporous coated TPCT is reduced by 51% at an FR of 0.35 and 30% at an FR of 0.75. The TPCT used in this study shows the best thermal performance at inclination angles between 15° and 30° and FRs between 0.2 and 0.4.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Boiling heat transfer in the thermosyphon is enhanced on the microporous coated surface. </LI> <LI> Condensation heat transfer performance is also affected by the microporous coating. </LI> <LI> The overall thermal resistance is reduced up to 51% through the microporous coating. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Depolarization Ratio Retrievals Using AERONET Sun Photometer Data

        We present linear particle depolarization ratios (LPDRs) retrieved from measurements with an AERONET Sun photometer at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Korea (35.10° N, 126.53° E) between 19 October and 3 November 2009. The Sun photometer data were classified into three categories according to Ångström exponent and size distribution: 1) pure Asian dust (19 October 2009), 2) Asian dust mixed with urban pollution observed in the period from 20-26 October 2009, and 3) clean conditions (3 November). We show that the LPDRs can be used to distinguish among Asian dust, mixed aerosol, and non-Asian dust in the atmosphere. The mean LPDR of the pure Asian dust case is 23 %. Mean LPDRs are 13 % for the mixed case. The lowest mean LPDR is 6 % in the clean case. We compare our results to vertically resolved LPDRs (at 532 nm) measured by a Raman LIDAR system at the same site. In most cases, we find good agreement between LPDRs derived with Sun photometer and measured by LIDAR.

        Acute Abdominal Pain in Patients with Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome in the Emergency Department

        Purpose: Severe abdominal pain and signs of peritoneal irritation in some patients with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) can mimic an acute surgical disease of the abdomen. We performed this study to analyze the clinical features and the laboratory and radiographic findings of HFRS patients who had acute abdominal pain upon visiting the emergency department (ED). Methods: The electronic medical records were retrospectively investigated during a 3 year period between January 2006 and December 2008. Results: Among the 44 patients with HFRS at the ED, 21patients (47.7%) complained of acute abdominal pain. On physical examination, three patients (14.3%) had rebound tenderness. The most common laboratory findings were thrombocytopenia, azotemia and proteinuria. Ascites, pericholecystic fluid collection, peri-renal fluid collection and pleural effusion were the major findings of abdominal computed tomography. Conclusion: Acute abdominal pain can be a presenting symptom of HFRS at the ED. In an endemic area, HFRS should be suspected in young patients who have acute abdominal pain, fever (or history of fever), tenderness (and rebound tenderness) of the abdomen, thrombocytopenia and proteinuria. Failure to recognize HFRS might delay the appropriate diagnostic approach and treatment.

      • Combating Resistance to Anti-IGFR Antibody by Targeting the Integrin <b>β</b>3-Src Pathway

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>Several phase II/III trials of anti–insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have shown limited efficacy. The mechanisms of resistance to IGF-1R mAb-based therapies and clinically applicable strategies for overcoming drug resistance are still undefined.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>IGF-1R mAb cixutumumab efficacy, alone or in combination with Src inhibitors, was evaluated in 10 human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and six non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines in vitro in two- or three-dimensional culture systems and in vivo in cell line– or patient-derived xenograft tumors in athymic nude mice (n = 6–9 per group). Cixutumumab-induced changes in cell signaling and IGF-1 binding to integrin β3 were determined by Western or ligand blotting, immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence, and cell adhesion analyses and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data were analyzed by the two-sided Student <I>t</I> test or one-way analysis of variance.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Integrin β3–Src signaling cascade was activated by IGF-1 in HNSCC and NSCLC cells, when IGF-1 binding to IGF-1R was hampered by cixutumumab, resulting in Akt activation and cixutumumab resistance. Targeting integrin β3 or Src enhanced antitumor activity of cixutumumab in multiple cixutumumab-resistant cell lines and patient-derived tumors in vitro and in vivo. Mean tumor volume of mice cotreated with cixutumumab and integrin β3 siRNA was 133.7mm<SUP>3</SUP> (95% confidence interval [CI] = 57.6 to 209.8mm<SUP>3</SUP>) compared with those treated with cixutumumab (1472.5mm<SUP>3</SUP>; 95% CI = 1150.7 to 1794.3mm<SUP>3</SUP>; <I>P</I> < .001) or integrin β3 siRNA (903.2mm<SUP>3</SUP>; 95% CI = 636.1 to 1170.3mm<SUP>3</SUP>; <I>P</I> < .001) alone.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Increased Src activation through integrin ανβ3 confers considerable resistance against anti–IGF-1R mAb-based therapies in HNSCC and NSCLC cells. Dual targeting of the IGF-1R pathway and collateral integrin β3–Src signaling module may override this resistance.</P>

Paradoxically, membrane-bound (mb)-IL-21 has been shown to improve human NK cell proliferation when cultured with IL-2/mb-IL-15. To clarify the role of IL-21, we investigated the effect of the timing of IL-21 addition to NK cell culture.</P>

        Characterization of 22 Antituberculosis Drugs for Inhibitory Interaction Potential on Organic Anionic Transporter Polypeptide (OATP)-Mediated Uptake

        <B>ABSTRACT</B><P>We investigated the inhibitory interaction potential of 22 currently marketed antituberculosis (TB) drugs on organic anion-transporting polypeptide 1B1 (OATP1B1)-, OATP2B1-, and OATP1B3-mediated uptake using<I>in vitro</I>Xenopusoocytes and HEK cells. Rifabutin, ethambutol, amoxicillin, linezolid,<I>p</I>-amino salicylic acid, and rifapentine exhibited mild to moderate inhibitory effects on OATP-mediated uptake of estrone-3 sulfate, estradiol 17β-d-glucuronide, and rosuvastatin. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of rifabutin, amoxicillin, ethambutol,<I>p</I>-amino salicylic acid, and linezolid were 35.4, 36.2, 57.6, 72.6, and 65.9 μM, respectively, for uptake mediated by organic anionic transporter polypeptide 1B1 (OATP1B1) and 28.8, 28.9, 53.9, 31.5, and 61.0 μM, respectively, for uptake mediated by organic anionic transporter polypeptide 1B3 (OATP1B3). Streptomycin and linezolid showed greater inhibition of organic anionic transporter polypeptide 2B1 (OATP2B1)-mediated uptake, with IC50values of 33.2 and 35.6 μM, respectively, along with mild inhibition of other drugs. Furthermore, rifabutin, amoxicillin, and rifapentine significantly inhibited OATP1B1-mediated rosuvastatin uptake, with IC50values of 12.3, 13.0, and 11.0 μM, respectively, which showed a similar profile to estrone-3 sulfate uptake. The calculated<I>R</I>values ([<I>I</I>]<I>u inlet,max</I>/<I>Ki</I>, where [<I>I</I>]<I>u inlet,max</I>represents the maximum estimated inhibitor concentration inlet to the liver and<I>Ki</I>is the inhibition constant) as the drug-drug interaction (DDI) indexes of PAS, ethambutol, and amoxicillin were 26.1, 6.5, and 4.3 for OATP1B1 and 52.0, 8.0, and 4.6 for OATP1B3, and those for streptomycin, amikacin, and linezolid were 5.0, 4.2, and 4.4 for OATP2B1, respectively, suggesting a higher possibility of<I>in vivo</I>DDIs. This study is the first comprehensive report to show the novel inhibitory potential of 22 marketed anti-TB drugs on OATP-mediated uptake, providing evidence for future<I>in vivo</I>clinical DDI studies.</P>
