Effects of Castor Meal on the Growth Performance and Carcass Characteristics of Beef Cattle

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing soybean meal with treated castor meal with (CMT) or without lime (CMNT) on the nutrient intake, performance, carcass characteristics, and yield of commercial cuts of beef cattle from a feedlot. Thirty male, castrated, crossbreed zebu cattle were used in the study, with an average initial weight of $360{\pm}30.27\;kg$. Five animals were used as a control group and were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment; the remaining animals (n = 25) were distributed in random blocks (repetitions), with body weight as the criterion for block assignment. The animals were fed a diet containing 65% corn silage and 35% of concentrate on dry matter (DM) basis. Five diets consisted of four levels of soybean meal (SM) substituted with CMT (0, 33, 67 and 100%) on a DM basis and a diet with 100% of SM replaced with CMNT. At the end of the experiment, all animals were slaughtered, and their gastrointestinal tracts were emptied to determine their empty body weights (EBW). No significant effects were observed (p>0.05) for the substitution of soybean meal with CMT on intake of dietary nutrients, the average daily body weight gain (ADG) or EBW gain (EBWG). In spite of greater (p<0.05) ricin intake for the diet containing CMNT (3.06 mg/kg BW) compared to the CMT diet (0.10 mg/kg BW/d), there were no effects (p>0.05) on intake of dietary nutrients, ADG or EBWG. The average intake of DM and the ADG were 10,664.63 and 1,353.04 g/d, respectively. Regarding carcass characteristics, only carcass yield in relation to body weight was linearly reduced (p<0.05) upon substitution of SM by CMT. There was no effect (p>0.05) of the substitution of SM by CMT or CMNT on the yield of carcass basic cuts. CMT prices that are higher than 85% of the SM price do not economically justify the use of CMT. For CMT prices between 20 and 80% of the SM price, the optimal level was 67% substitution, while for prices below 15% of the SM price, the optimal level was 100% substitution with CMT. It can be concluded that treated castor meal with 6% lime can totally replace soybean meal in beef cattle diets.
The cerium peculiar valence charge in CeN

Rare earth nitrides are very interesting due to a well-behaved ionic radii-dependent physical observables. However, cerium nitride is different in many ways, for example, its lattice parameter does not “match” with Ce ionic radius in comparison with other rare-earth nitrides. To contribute to this issue, here I propose three models, based on very accurate classical calculations, which take into account charge transfers and/or contamination by Ce4+ ions to describe valence states in cerium nitride compounds from T = 0 K to T > 1500 K. This thermal dependence of the Ce valence charge has permitted to calculate many temperature-dependent physical observables. Such information is useful to clarify the Ce valence state in cerium nitride as well as give some estimations concerning experimental data in a very large temperature range of cerium nitride compounds.

Objectives This study investigated the prevalence and characteristics of external cervical resorption (ECR) regarding sex, age, tooth, stages of progression, and portal of entry, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Materials and Methods CBCT scans of 1,313 patients from a Brazilian subpopulation comprising 883 female and 430 male patients (mean age, 55.2 years), acquired using a PreXion 3D CBCT unit, were evaluated. All permanent teeth included in the scans were evaluated for the presence of ECR according to the 3-dimensional classification and the portal of entry. The association between the presence of ECR and the factors studied was assessed using the χ2 test. Intra-observer agreement was analyzed with the kappa test (α = 0.05). Results In total, 6,240 teeth were analyzed, of which 84 (1.35%) were affected by ECR. A significant association was found between the presence of ECR and sex, with a higher prevalence in male patients (p = 0.002). The most frequently affected teeth were the mandibular and maxillary central incisors. The most common height was the mid-third of the root. For the portal of entry, 44% of cases were on the proximal surfaces, 40.5% on the lingual/palatal surface and 15.5% on the buccal surface. Intra-observer agreement was excellent. Conclusions The prevalence of ECR was 1.35%, with a higher prevalence in male patients and a wide age distribution. The mandibular and maxillary central incisors were the most commonly affected teeth, and cases of ECR most frequently showed a height into the mid-third of the root and proximal entry. Surgical Treatment of Acetabular Posterior Wall Fracture with Hip Arthroscopy: A Case Report

Posterior wall fractures are the most common type of acetabular fractures. Treatment can be conservative or surgical. Operative treatment is indicated for acetabular fractures that result in hip joint instability and/or incongruity, as well injuries with incarceration of fragments of bone or soft tissue within the hip joint. Surgical treatment can range from open reduction and osteosynthesis to hip arthroplasty. Arthroscopy has recently been used as the main surgical technique or as a reduction aid. In this case a 26-year-old male with a fracture of the posterior wall who underwent a posterior miniinvasive approach, followed by hip arthroscopy. This allowed joint wash, removal of the loose body, confirmation of reduction and absence of intra-articular hardware. Excellent clinical and radiological results were obtained. This case demonstrates the advantage of using hip arthroscopy in assessment of fracture reduction, the absence of intra-articular hardware or fragments, as well as a less invasive approach.

The objective of the present study was to monitor and characterize morphological alterations in ovaries of agouti (Dasyprocta prymnolopha), reared in captivity, by using abdominal ultrasonography. All animals underwent daily vaginal cytological examination to identify the current cycle phase. For each phase of the estrous cycle, ultrasound examinations were carried out to identify and describe the morphology of both ovaries. Topographic parameters in an ultrasound window were established to locate the ovaries. The agouti estrous cycle lasted an average of 29.94 ± 6.77 days. During vaginal cytology examinations, all cell types were identified, and each phase of the estrous cycle was established by cell counts. No significant alterations were observed in the assessed ovarian morphometry measurements. In 75% of the animals examined, ovarian follicle presence was observed in the proestrus phase.
