Plan for Creating Forest Landscape in Janggye Neigborhood Park

Deugsoo Ahn,Sanghui Kang 전북대학교 휴양및경관계획연구소 2017 휴양및경관연구 (J East Asian Landscape Studies) Vol.11 No.2

The aim of this plan was the creation of a series of forests landscape within the forest-damaged areas in Janggye Neighborhood Park (132,000㎡), located in Jangsu-gun, Jeollabuk-do, for improving the quality of rural landscape and promoting leisure activities. Additional objectives included developing forest-related local festivals and energizing the local economy. In establishing these plans, the researcher considered analyses of the following designating the project areas: forests, types of forest landscape damage, views, landscape quality, and topographical characteristics. Local residents were given survey questions, and 58 sets of response sheets were incorporated into the construction plans for the forest landscape. The goal of the plan was established as the construction of specialized forests that offer outstanding landscape quality and healing effects. The selected trees were the Acer palmatum Thunb. (beautiful foliage), Chamaecyparis obtusa (outstanding healing effects), and Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm. (related festival applicability). The Acer palmatum Thunb. forest design reflects consideration for the highlighting of seasonal landscape changes and wintertime outdoor ambulation; thus, its location is planned along the trail in linear. Considerations for the Chamaecyparis obtusa forest were visitor accessibility and distribution of phytoncide; hence, placement is mostly in the valley near existing park facilities, with trees placed in rows for user convenience. For visual impact, the Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm. forest must be seen from nearby highways; thus, it was allocated to the higher elevation sites within forest-damaged areas using natural-looking patterns of planting. Local festivals featuring the Chamaecyparis obtusa and Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm. forests as themes were planned. Such programs were envisioned as contributing to revitalization of rural economy.

Analyses of Users Behavior to Construct and Manage Auto Campsites - A Case of the Auto Campsite in Jangsu Nuri Park -

Deugsoo Ahn,Nara Jeong 전북대학교 휴양및경관계획연구소 2018 휴양및경관연구 (J East Asian Landscape Studies) Vol.12 No.4

The aim of this study is to obtain basic data to set the direction for construct and managing auto campsites. A survey was conducted with users of an auto campsite located in Jangsu Nuri Park in October 2018, and 32 copies of the questionnaire were used in the analysis. Auto camping is typically undertaken for a night or two with family or friends/colleagues. The adequacy of fees and location are important factors in choosing the campsite, so it is desirable to build one in the suburbs of the city and offer it at a reasonable price. Proximity to tourist spots and convenience in using facilities are also factors that must be considered. People are generally engaged in activities such as taking walks, relaxing, and looking around campsites, and they want to enjoy various other amenities like attractions, experiences, entertainment, and active leisure options, which is why there must be facilities to support these behaviors. The first-time visitors of the campsite showed high satisfaction with its individual facilities, while repeat visitors showed high overall satisfaction, which indicates that satisfaction with individual elements did not lead to overall satisfaction.

Master Plan for Creating a Cultural and Historical Area around Deokjinji in Deokjin Park

Deugsoo Ahn,Sanghui Kang,Hyeonsang Choi 전북대학교 휴양및경관계획연구소 2016 휴양및경관연구 (J East Asian Landscape Studies) Vol.10 No.2

The goal of this master plan is to utilize the historical and cultural landscape resources of Deokjin park, with a thousand years of history, to improve the park’s value, promote the creative development of the historical and cultural landscape, increase the number of tourists, and tourists’ experience elating to traditional culture in the northern district of Jeonju, Korea. To establish master plan, this study analyzed the location, natural environment, and human environment of Deokjin park. The target of this study was limited to the area surrounding Deokjinji within Deokjin park. In order to reflect visitors’ opinions, a survey was conducted relating to the tourism resources around Deokjinji. “Masterpiece of the world! Deokjin park” was selected as a vision statement for the park. The theme of the master plan for the area surrounding Deokjinji is “Pure love that has bloomed for a millennium in Deokjinji,” with the motifs of millennial history and lotus flowers. The development strategy includes thematizing the love of Deokjinji over a thousand years, strengthening the connections with nearby resources, and specializing in the nightscape and nighttime activities. This study suggested the following as facilities for year-round tourism: a traditional dike to reinforce the historic nature of Deokjinji; a performing ferryboat that connects Deokjinji with Jeonju Pansori (traditional dramatic songs); a water lily greenhouse and a botanical garden of sweet-flags/lotuses, thereby using lotuses, as the representative resource of Deokjinji. In particular, the dike around Deokjinji has been designed as the millennial love dike trail, taking into account the historic nature and structural significance based on its thousand-year history and its unique curved shape.

Behavior and IPA for Activating Cycling Road on Seomjin Riverside

Deugsoo Ahn,Sanghui Kang,Nara Jeong 전북대학교 휴양및경관계획연구소 2016 휴양및경관연구 (J East Asian Landscape Studies) Vol.10 No.4

The purpose of this study is to analyze the behavior of users of the Seomjin River cycling road, which is surrounded by gorgeous natural landscape. Further, we aim to understand the correlation between the importance and performance of various factors rated by users to obtain baseline data that can help to increase the usage of the bike path. We conduct a survey by performing one-on-one interviews at three locations, all of which have a certification center that verifies the completion of the bike path. The bike path attracts visitors from all over the country. First-time visitors and travel plans involving stays of at least one night account for a relatively high percentage of users. The primary purpose of the visit was more related to mental health issues rather than physical health issues. The most attractive feature of the Seomjin River is the beautiful landscape. However, the participation rate from clubs is low, and the visit rate to nearby tourist attractions is also low for scheduling reasons. Important factors that are considered using the bike path are accessibility, safety, bike path condition, amenity, and convenience, while the connectivity has a relatively low importance. We confirm that the convenience of the bike path is as important as providing a safe and amenity while surrounded by gorgeous landscape. The amenity and safety are rated highly for performance and while accessibility and convenience have low rating. The analysis of the detail evaluation items showed that the performance was high for surrounding gorgeous landscape, and non-crowded setting and performance was lowest for inadequate bike repair facilities. A comparison of the importance and performance showed that the performance lower than the importance, and had statistical significance. Accessibility, which is an external environmental factor, had the largest difference. On the other hand, for the detail evaluation items, the degree of crowding, surrounding landscape, and experience opportunities did not have statistical significance, but had a higher performance. This confirmed that they were factors that had the highest satisfaction for the Seomjin River cycling road. Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) results indicated that the items requiring consistent maintenance were surrounding landscape, bike path signs, safety from pedestrians and vehicles, and convenient accessibility. Items that required specific improvement were convenient transportation for returning home, pavement material, and the degree of damage. On the other hand, items that were more effective in terms of their ability to maintain the current conditions were experiences of nearby rural villages, accessibility to nearby tourist attractions, local tourist attractions, and bike repair facilities. The bike repair facilities option had a considerably low performance compared to the importance. For items that were rated with low importance but high performance, it was more effective to allocate the effort for corresponding sections to other items. However, for the degree of crowding, which belonged to this particular category, it was actually more efficient to place on attracting users in order to increase the usage of the bike path.

Assessment of Use Suitability for Resource Management in Natural Parks - Focusing on Jeollabuk-do Provincial Parks -

Deugsoo Ahn,Nara Jeong 전북대학교 휴양및경관계획연구소 2017 휴양및경관연구 (J East Asian Landscape Studies) Vol.11 No.2

This study analyzed the use suitability with regard to resource characteristics of provincial parks to provide basic data for park management, and has yielded the following results. Organized by resource, the use suitability is highest for landscape/scenery, weather/climate, smell/sound/colors, and topography/ geology. By season, weather/climate is important in the spring, and landscape/scenery is important in the summer and autumn in determining the use suitability. Aside from the temporary phenomena of the weather/climate, the resource that most influences the use suitability of provincial parks is landscape/scenery for spring, summer, and autumn. Specifically, on a park basis, Mt. Moak’s most important resource for park use suitability is the weather/climate; other parks’ most important resource is landscape/scenery. Mt. Moak and Mt. Seonun Provincial Parks have high use suitabilities in the spring; Mt. Daedun and Mt. Mai Provincial Parks have high use suitabilities in the spring and summer. Organizing parks on a seasonal basis, there are differences depending on the resource type; moreover, there are differences in use suitability between parks depending on the season. Through evaluating the use suitability of parks, it is possible to identify resource characteristics of parks and to predict the seasonal use frequency of parks in park management, which can be used as the basic data for determining the intensity of management. As such, this study can aid visitors in determining which park suits their use purposes, and for managers in determining the priority by which the parks should be managed.

Characteristics of Landscape Ecological Changes in an Urban Fringe Area

Deugsoo Ahn,Sungil Han,Keunho Kim 전북대학교 휴양및경관계획연구소 2016 휴양및경관연구 (J East Asian Landscape Studies) Vol.10 No.4

Landscapes are dynamic and therefore they experience frequent changes over time. This research analyzed the landscape changes and spatial characteristics of woodlands in an urban fringe landscape to provide information for the sustainable landscape ecological planning. The results showed that the studied landscape changed between 2002 and 2014 mainly due to new road construction and residential development. Several landscape ecological indicators were used to assess the woodland changes and the overall effect of woodland changes on the landscape structure. The results of the landscape ecological analysis revealed a decrease in patch size of less 5ha (n=13) and between 5ha and 9.9ha (n=2). AWSI decreased from 4.03 in 2002 to 3.89 in 2014, and MND increased from 38.41m in 2002 to 49.12m in 2014, and SDI of land cover type decreased from 1.16 in 2002 to 0.18 in 2014. The results suggest that woodlands have become smaller and more isolated. The shape of the woodlands has also become simpler and more regular. These spatial woodland changes adversely impact the biodiversity. For further information on landscape ecological conditions, a more comprehensive analysis based on more landscape ecological metrics and ecological information such as habitats and species surveys is needed in future studies.

Analyses of Schizophrenics’ Physiological Reaction and Visual Preference for Green Spaces

Deugsoo Ahn 전북대학교 휴양및경관계획연구소 2016 휴양및경관연구 (J East Asian Landscape Studies) Vol.10 No.2

The purpose of this study was to analyze physiological reactions and visual preferences for lawn and flowerbed preferred by mental patients, and green space which is highly related with healing effects. Subjects were 25 mild cases of schizophrenia, who on the recommendation of their doctor, resided in psychiatric hospitals located in Jeollabuk-do, Korea. The survey was carried out in August 2010. The subjects were shown computer graphic simulations by a beam projector, and then brain wave and preferences were measured. In regards to physiological responses, the separate arrangement of tree cluster promoted a sense of stability and vitality, simultaneously. In the aspect of visual preferences, just one mass was preferred. The natural landscape planting pattern was visually preferred. There was a difference in preferences for the planting proportion of evergreen and deciduous trees in the leaf-fall and leaf-color seasons, but when both of them are taken into consideration, it is advisable that 75% of trees planted be occupied by evergreens to encourage emotional stability. The higher the ratio of tree to a lawn, the higher the visual preference. The ratio of 1:1 or 1:0.5 between a lawn and trees is advisable if the physiological effect is considered, but creating a lawn alone should be avoided. With regard to color preferences for the flower bed, orange was visually preferred. Pink was desirable to create a sense of emotional stability, and red to physiologically revitalize the subjects.

A Comparative Study of the Location and Outdoor Space Composition of Korean and Chinese Seowons - Focusing on the Sosu and Bailudong Seowons -

Qinhong Ren,Deugsoo Ahn 전북대학교 휴양및경관계획연구소 2016 휴양및경관연구 (J East Asian Landscape Studies) Vol.10 No.1

This paper analyzes the location, landscape elements, and outdoor space composition in the Korean Sosu seowon and Chinese Bailudong seowon. The Sosu and Bailudong seowons were designed to fit well into similar valleys, and they share the approach of Jwa hak woo myo, which means the sacrificial space is on the right and the educational space is on the left. The two seowons each have unique layout characteristics, which reflect topographical features. In the case of the Sosu seowon, the buildings have different orientations, creating a natural arrangement of structures. By contrast, in Bailudong seowon, buildings have a fixed orientation and a formal serial-parallel arrangement along five abscissa axes and one longitudinal axis. Pedestrian systems were established in both seowons, designed to reflect the hierarchical order of the buildings. The Sosu seowon adopted the pedestrian system that encouraged strolling, while the Bailudong seowon’s orthogonal circulation system was set up lengthwise, in parallel with the transverse. The component buildings used for worshiping ancestors and giving lectures, as well as the supporting spaces, were created at the start of the building process, while various other buildings were built to meet the needs of later periods. The two waterscape facilities are also very different: the Takcheongji (pond) at the Sosu seowon symbolizes clarifying the mind through study, while the Panchi (pond) at the Bailudong seowon merges with the Lishengdian (shrine) to contain and represent Confucian culture. The rock carvings at the two seowons differ in both quantity and content. However both sets of rock carvings incorporate Neo-Confucian meanings designed to encourage students to cultivate themselves. From the perspective of earlier literature, both seowons took the meaning of trees very seriously, although they planted different types of trees in their grounds.
