Purpose: This study attempted to identify determinants affecting research collaboration and R&D distribution activities, especially regarding facility and equipment leasing of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in South Korea. The objective of this study was to find the most significant firm characteristics that affect firms participating in an R&D collaboration and distribution program and investing in R&D in terms of leasing payment for equipment. Research design, data, and methodology: This study analyzes which SMEs’ characteristics influence external research cooperation activities by examining the SMEs that received government support for equipment leasing using multiple regression analysis and residual plots. The survey combined two databases: 1) a fact-finding survey of participating firms by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and 2) leasing information by the Korea Association of University, Research Institute and Industry. Results: The study found that firm size positively impacts R&D investment, R&D collaboration and distribution. Conclusions: The study provided evidence to policymakers and government officials that firms with more employees will more likely participate in government support programs. The study results also prove that government officials believe firm location does not impact R&D investment, R&D collaboration and distribution.

<P>To evaluate the differences of cervical alignment between standing cervical lateral radiograph and whole-spine lateral radiograph with clavicle position. We prospectively evaluated 101 asymptomatic adults from whom standing cervical lateral radiograph with hands on both side followed by whole-spine lateral radiographs with clavicle position were obtained from April 2012 to December 2013. On two radiographs, cervical sagittal alignment from C2 to C7 was analyzed by Gore angle (GA) and Cobb angle (CA); head position was evaluated using the translation distance (TD, distance of the anterior tubercle of C1 compared with the vertical line through the posterior-inferior body of C7) and McGregor angle (MA, angle between the McGregor and horizontal lines). T1-slope was also evaluated. Cervical alignment on the cervical radiograph (GA -13.59A degrees [-15.58 to -11.60], CA -9.76A degrees [-11.65 to -7.86]) was significantly more lordotic than that on whole-spine radiographs (GA -6.28A degrees [-8.65 to -3.91] and -4.14A degrees [-6.40 to -1.89]). TD and MA on cervical radiographs (TD 34.98 mm [33.22-36.75]; MA 7.20A degrees [6.35-8.35]) were meaningfully higher than those on whole-spine radiographs (TD 31.31 mm [29.47-33.16]; MA 6.32A degrees [5.25-7.39]), but the MA values were not significant (p = 0.064). T1-slope was significantly lower in whole-spine radiographs (20.11A degrees [18.88-21.35]) than in cervical radiographs (24.37A degrees [23.14-25.6]). Values are expressed as mean (95 % confidence interval). Clavicle position during whole-spine radiograph caused a substantial decrease in the T1-slope; head position posteriorly translated followed by the cervical sagittal alignment became more hypo-lordotic, with slight downward gazing in comparison with the cervical radiograph.</P>

<B>Summary</B><P> Background: Alcohol ingestion influences sensory-motor function and the overall well-being of individuals. Detecting alcoholinduced impairments in gait in daily life necessitates a continuous and unobtrusive gait monitoring system. </P><P> Objectives: This paper introduces the development and use of a non-intrusive monitoring system to detect changes in gait induced by alcohol intoxication. </P><P> Methods: The proposed system employed a pair of sensorized smart shoes that are equipped with pressure sensors on the insole. Gait features were extracted and adjusted based on individual’s gait profile. The adjusted gait features were used to train a machine learning classifier to discriminate alcohol-impaired gait from normal walking. In experiment of pilot study, twenty participants completed walking trials on a 12 meter walkway to measure their sober walking and alcohol-impaired walking using smart shoes. </P><P> Results: The proposed system can detect alcohol-impaired gait with an accuracy of 86.2% when pressure value analysis and person-dependent model for the classifier are applied, while statistical analysis revealed that no single feature was discriminative for the detection of gait impairment. </P><P> Conclusions: Alcohol-induced gait disturbances can be detected with smart shoe technology for an automated monitoring in ubiquitous environment. We demonstrated that personal monitoring and machine learning-based prediction could be customized to detect individual variation rather than applying uniform boundary parameters of gait.</P>

<P>Apoptosis is thought to be a critical component of disc degeneration. Two main pathways of Fas-mediated apoptosis have been identified: Type I, which is the death-inducing signaling complex pathway, and Type II, which is the mitochondrial pathway. The apoptotic pathway for anulus fibrosus cells, which is phenotypically different from that of nucleus pulposus cells, has not been elucidated to our knowledge. The ultimate initiators or executioners of apoptosis are caspases. There are also inhibitors of caspases, which have the potential of being used as anti-apoptotic therapeutic agents. We therefore undertook this study to determine (1) the apoptotic pathway of anulus fibrosus cells and (2) the anti-apoptotic potential of caspase inhibitors.</P>

<P>We have developed a graphene sticker prepared by simply detaching graphene directly grown on a self-catalytic 관-Al???O??? substrate with a spin-coated polymer film. Our scheme is highlighted by the metal-free and bare-hand manageable process. The sticker is attached onto the flat surface of a D-shaped fiber to demonstrate an efficient fiber mode-locked laser. The 1-ps output pluses have the center wavelength, spectral width, and repetition rate of 1558.2 nm, 5.42 nm, and 4.77 MHz, respectively.</P>
Expression of Ezrin and Metastatic Tumor Antigen in Osteosarcomas of the Jaw

<P>AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Ezrin is a membrane-cytoskeleton linker protein involved in regulation of the growth and metastatic behavior of cancer cells. Metastatic tumor antigen (MTA) is a potential metastasis-associated protein. The objective of this study was to evaluate the expression of ezrin and MTA and their correlation with clinicopathological features in osteosarcomas of the jaw. METHODS: We analyzed ezrin and MTA protein levels by immunohistochemistry in 31 osteosarcomas of the jaw. RESULTS: The mean age at diagnosis was 39 years and half of the patients were male. The mandible (n = 19) was more frequently involved than the maxilla (n = 12). The predominant histological type was chondroblastic (58.1%) and 24 patients (77.4%) were classified as having a high grade of malignancy. Immunoreactivity for ezrin was identified in 6 of 31 cases (19.4%), while 77.4% displayed expression of MTA. All ezrin-positive patients had high-grade tumors. The high-grade tumors (n = 24) had a higher rate of MTA expression (42.9% vs 87.5%). Expression of ezrin and MTA was not significantly different according to age, sex, tumor site, histological type, and tumor ploidy. Follow-up information was available for 13 patients, with a mean follow-up time of 26.7 months (range, 6-48 months). At the time of last follow-up, 5 (38.5%) patients had died of disease and 8 patients (61.5%) were alive with no evidence of disease. Expression of ezrin and MTA was not significantly different according to the follow-up data. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, high-grade tumors had a higher rate of ezrin and MTA expression. This expression pattern indicates that ezrin and MTA positivity can be additional prognostic markers in osteosarcoma of the jaw.</P>
