      • The Dynasty Model and Business Groups in the Philippines

Richard B. Daite 한국무역연구원 2014 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.10 No.2

One of the economic models used to explain household behavior is the so-called Dynasty Model, which states that individuals derive satisfaction on seeing the perpetuation of the family line or business. Their behavior is shaped by the motivation to exert effort such that the family business (and the family line) is spared from destruction or extinction. In terms of transfer behavior, this implies that individuals will tend to leave behind a bequest only if their child/children carry on the family line or the family business. The interest of this paper is to gather indications of dynastic behavior of familybased business groups in the Philippines. Using information from corporate reports of the prominent business groups sampled, the dynastic motives in family-based business groups in the Philippines are evident. These highly diversified groups tend to perpetuate the business by concentrating control within family boundaries.

      • Supply-Chaining, Transaction Costs, and Governance Structures : A Conceptual Framework and Its Applications

Richard B. Daite 한국무역연구원 2012 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.8 No.1

While supply-chain management is principally a business management concept, supply chains involve contractual relationships among economic agents, uncertainty of outcomes, conflict and complementarity, power and property rights, and the prevalence of opportunity costs. A fuller understanding of its workings necessitates a more multidimensional approach. This paper focuses on the theoretical underpinnings of new institutional economics to better frame the analysis of supply chains. Specifically, the transaction cost economics (TCE) concepts marshaled by Ronald Coase and Oliver Williamson were used to build a framework for analyzing the design of supply chains. The paper tries to situate the concept of supply chain within the range of structures proposed in the TCE literature, with the markets on one end of the spectrum and hierarchies in the other. We show that an integrated supply chain belongs to a middle category in the spectrum. Case studies of several industries affirmed that a dominant governance structure in the form of either a coordinated or fully integrated supply chain would evolve to minimize transaction costs.

      • Mainstreaming Green Growth in the Global Swine Industry

Maria Angeles O,Cateloa,Richard B,Daite 아시아무역학회 2017 Journal of Asia Trade and Business Vol.4 No.1

Global trade in pig meat is forecast to grow on an upward trend as it did between 2006 and 2015. But in meeting future higher demand for pig meat, growth in swine production and productivity has to occur sustainably because of the environmental problems that are associated with it. The pursuit of green growth is a strategic initiative towards achieving sustainable development and inclusive growth particularly for developing countries in Asia, such as the Philippines which ranked 8th in the world in terms of the carcass equivalent of swine production. Applying a comparative analysis of environmental indicators to a balanced panel dataset of 80 swine farm observations from top swine-producing regions of Central Luzon and South Luzon for 2002 and 2015, this paper examines whether swine production in the Philippines exhibits the characteristics of green growth. The paper also determines the potential and constraints of mainstreaming green growth in swine production. The results of the analysis reveal that swine farms exhibit green growth characteristic of pollution reduction but only to a certain degree, scale, and production arrangement. Mainstreaming green growth in swine production is not impossible but will entail many cost, market, financial, and institutional barriers to hurdle.

LINC00562 drives gastric cancer development by regulating miR-4636–AP1S3 axis

Lin Xu,Daiting Liu,Xun Wang 대한약리학회 2023 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.27 No.3

Dysregulation of certain long non-coding RNAs may facilitate tumor initiation and progression. However, numerous carcinogenesis-related long noncoding RNAs have not been characterized. The goal of this study was to elucidate the role of LINC00562 in gastric cancer (GC). The expression of LINC00562 was analyzed using real-time quantitative PCR and Western blotting. The proliferative capacity of GC cells was determined using Cell Counting Kit-8 and colony-formation assays. The migration of GC cells were evaluated using wound-healing assays. The apoptosis of GC cells was assessed by measuring the expression levels of apoptosis-related proteins (Bax and Bcl-2). Xenograft models in nude mice were constructed for in vivo functional analysis of LINC00562. The binding relationship between miR-4636 and LINC00562 or adaptor protein complex 1 sigma 3 (AP1S3), obtained from public databases, was confirmed using dual-luciferase and RNA-binding protein immunoprecipitation experiments. LINC00562 was expressed in GC cells at high levels. Knockdown of LINC00562 repressed GC cell growth and migration, promoted apoptosis in vitro, and inhibited tumor growth in nude mouse models. LINC00562 directly targeted miR-4636, and miR-4636 depletion restored the GC cell behavior inhibited by LINC00562 absence. AP1S3, an oncogene, binds to miR-4636. MiR-4636 downregulation increased AP1S3 level, restoring GC cell malignant behaviors inhibited by AP1S3 downregulation. Thus, LINC00562 exerts carcinogenic effects on GC development by targeting miR-4636-mediated AP1S3 signaling.
