Peucedanum japonicum Thunberg (PJT) has been used in traditional medicine to treat colds, coughs, fevers, and other inflammatory diseases. The goal of this study was to investigate whether 3′-isovaleryl-4′-senecioylkhellactone (IVSK) from PJT has anti-inflammatory effects on lung epithelial cells. The anti-inflammatory effects of IVSK were evaluated using phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-stimulated A549 cells and regular human lung epithelial cells as a reference. IVSK reduced the secretion of the inflammatory mediators interleukin (IL)-8 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and the mRNA expression of IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, and IL-1β. Additionally, it inhibited the phosphorylation of IκB kinase (IKK), p65, Iκ-Bα, and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) p38, JNK, and ERK in A549 cells stimulated with PMA. Moreover, the binding affinity of activator protein-1 (AP-1) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) was significantly reduced in the luciferase assay, while nuclear translocation was markedly inhibited by IVSK in the immunocytochemistry. These findings indicate that IVSK can protect against inflammation through the AP-1 and NF-κB pathway and could possibly be used as a lead compound for the treatment of inflammatory lung diseases.

Environmental and health inequality experienced by mothers and infants during early child development has a continuous effect on health and development after childhood, and is further exacerbated if there is no appropriate early intervention. Therefore, most countries primarily use the (national) healthcare system and healthcare services to implement early intervention for mothers and infants during the early stages of child development. However, domestic healthcare services have gaps in terms of time, place, and connection between services, and studies comparing and analyzing foreign systems in terms of time, place, and connection are also insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to suggest ways to improve maternal and child health care services in South Korea by subdividing healthcare services provided in the United States, Japan, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom according to life cycle and type, and comparing and analyzing each dimension. The results of the comparative analysis between countries are as follows: First, all countries (used for comparative study) manage their health through the “in-service” type. Second, the United States, Japan, and Germany mainly managed maternal and child health through clinic and hospital clinic services, while Sweden and the United Kingdom managed maternal and child health through home visiting services. Third, the United States, Japan, and Germany all had gaps in at least one of the temporal (time), spatial (place), and linkage (connection) dimensions, but Sweden and the United Kingdom were excellent in all dimensions. Fourth, all countries demanded a bachelor's degree or higher from home visiting service personnel (providers), and Sweden and the UK demanded high expertise, such as master's degrees, as home visiting personnel played a large role. Therefore, as in the case of advanced countries, Korea needs to reduce various dimensions of inequality through early intervention for early childhood development in order to promote the healthy start and growth of pregnant women and infants.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A series of 4-aryl-thieno[1,4]diazepin-2-one were synthesized and evaluated for their antiproliferative activities against the A375P melanoma and U937 hematopoietic cell lines. Several compounds showed very potent antiproliferative activities toward both cell lines and the activities were better than that of sorafenib, the reference standard. Derivatives were made as amide (<B>8a</B>–<B>8i</B>, <B>9a</B>–<B>9m</B>) and urea (<B>10a</B>–<B>10d</B>, <B>11a</B>–<B>11d</B>) with diverse hydrophobic moieties. One of the most potent inhibitor <B>10d</B>, 1-(4-((4-ethylpiperazin-1-yl)methyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3-(4-(2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-<I>1H</I>-thieno [3,4-<I>b</I>][1,4]diazepin-4-yl)phenyl)urea was found to be very potent inhibitor of multi-protein kinases including FMS kinase (IC<SUB>50</SUB> = 3.73 nM) and is a promising candidate for further development in therapeutics for cancer.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Recently, the Korean government has been carrying out various policies for the development of SMEs, especially the technology development of advanced IT-related SMEs. In other words, it has classified enormous investment and support policies into eco-friendly and smart cars, high technology industries, pharmaceutical and bio-industries, drones and renewable energy. The purpose of this study is to examine the case of a company that benefited from the financing support project for IT-related SMEs based on the government policy. In other words, we tried to consider the comprehensive competitiveness of the companies, mainly DAIHAN Scientific, Co., Ltd., a beneficiary of government loans support policy. To do this, we analyze the factors influencing prosperity and growth by using Michael Porter’s diamond model and value chain model. DAIHAN Scientific, Co., Ltd. is engaged in the distribution and manufacture of laboratory equipments, and is steadily growing through continuous innovation. As a result of the analysis, it can be confirmed that the government's support policy helps the development of the company and has an important positive effect. In conclusion, the concept and recent changes in the 4th Industrial Revolution and the GPN (Global Production Network) is discussed, and strategic implications for the future of the company are also suggested.

대부분의 국내 기후변화 영향 연구는 기후변화가 일부 산업 등에 미치는 개별 효과 추정을 중심으로 한정되어 있고, 통합기후모형을 통한 기후변화의 종합적인 경제 피해 비용, 또는 탄소의 사회적 비용 추정은 아직 미미한 상태이다. 본 연구는 최신 통합기후모형인 Golosov, Hassler, Krusell, and Tsyvinski(2014)를 통하여 제주도에서의 탄소의 사회적 비용을 국내 최초로 추정하였다. 본 연구의 분석에 따르면 2019년 기준으로 제주도에서 탄소 배출로 인한 연평균 총 사회적 비용은 약 205~365억 원 정도로 추정되었다. 탄소의 사회적 비용을 1톤당 비용으로 전환했을 때 제주도에서의 비용은 약 16,000원~29,000원 사이로 추정 되었다. In Korea, most research on the economic effects of climate change is limited to partial analyses of climate change on individual industries and sectors. Estimates on aggregate costs of externality caused by climate change a.k.a. the social cost of carbon through a lens of the Integrated Assessment Model (IAM) are rare. Based on recent IAM proposed by Golosov, Hassler, Krusell, and Tsyvinski (2014) this study estimates the social cost of carbon in Jeju Island for the first time in Korea. We find that social cost of carbon in Jeju Island based on year 2019 are estimated between ₩20.5 and ₩36.5 billion. These results amount to the social cost of carbon of a range from ₩16,000 to ₩29,000 per ton carbon in Jeju Island.

With the growth of aging population in Korea, a better care of chronic and other degenerative illnesses is urgently needed. Evidences suggest that this can be achieved through incorporating a wide range of care options, expanding beyond medical interventions. The aim of this study is to analyze the distribution of publically funded research to understand if the Korean research and development funding system matches various approaches and purposes to successfully tackle the chronic care needs of an aging society. We complied the list of funded projects to be analyzed by searching the National Technical Information Service database with key words such as aging society/senescence, chronic diseases, disability, and health promotion. Most projects were based on the biomedical approach with the purpose of establishing the etiology and clinical (treatment) interventions. Health promotion projects showed a distinctive distribution with more percentage of projects based on psycho-behavioral approaches while research on chronic diseases predominantly biomedical. It would be necessary to diversify publically-funded research projects to develop effective and efficient care technologies for the future.
Chiral Cyclodimeric Zinc(II) Complexes: Enantio-recognition via Differential Pulse Voltammetry

<P>Self-assembly of a series of ZnX<SUB>2</SUB> (X<SUP>-</SUP> = Cl<SUP>-</SUP>, Br<SUP>-</SUP>, and I<SUP>-</SUP>) with (<I>S</I>)-(1-isonicotinoylpyrrolidin-2-yl)methyl isonicotinate (L) as a new chiral hemicircular bidentate ligand yields a system comprising 30-membered metallacyclodimeric species [ZnX<SUB>2</SUB>L]<SUB>2</SUB> with two chiral centers. In the solid state, the metallacyclodimers’ packing arrays differ according to the anions and nestled solvate molecules. In the present study, the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique was employed for chiral discrimination of amino acid enantiomers with <I>S</I>-chiral [ZnX<SUB>2</SUB>L]<SUB>2</SUB> and was found to be an effective tool for enantio-recognition of amino acids.</P><P>Chiral cyclodimeric species [ZnX<SUB>2</SUB>L]<SUB>2</SUB> (X<SUP>−</SUP> = Cl<SUP>−</SUP>, Br<SUP>−</SUP>, and I<SUP>−</SUP>) have showed significant enantioselective chiral recognition for amino acids via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). <I>S</I>-Chiral zinc(II) cyclodimers provide more effective enantio-recognition with the <SMALL>D</SMALL>-form than with the <SMALL>L</SMALL>-form amino acids.
