An approximately 21 kDa antimicrobial protein was purified from an acidified testis extract of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, by ion-exchange and C<SUB>18</SUB> reversed-phase HPLC. A comparison of the N-terminal amino acid sequence with those of other known antimicrobial polypeptides revealed high homology between this antimicrobial protein and other histone H1 molecules; thus, it was designated flounder histone H1-like protein (fH1LP). fH1LP showed potent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus iniae (minimal effective concentrations [MECs], 2.8-30.0 μg/ml), Gram-negative bacteria, including Aeromonas hydrophila, Escherichia coli D31, Vibrio parahaemolyticus (MECs, 1.4-12.0 μg/ml), and Candida albicans (MEC, 2.0 μg/ml). cDNA cloning and tissue distribution studies of fH1LP indicated that it is constitutively expressed in testis and ovary. The fH1LP expression level was significantly dependent on developmental stage, and decreased dramatically after hatching. However, lipopolysaccharide stimulation did not induce fH1LP mRNA in other immune organs, including the kidney and spleen. These results suggest that fH1LP plays an important role in innate immunity in fish during reproduction, including mating, fertilization, and hatching.

The emulsion stability of W/O emulsion prepared by D phase emulsification during storage and handling is studied by using phase diagrams. The process of D phase emulsification begins with the formation of isotropic surfactant solution, followed by formation of oil-in-surfactant (O/D) gel emulsion by dispersion of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane(OMCS) in the surfactant solution. Polyols were essential components for this purpose. To understand the function of polyols, the solution behavior of nonionic surfactant/oil/water/polyol systems were investigated by the ternary phase diagrams of polyoxyethylene loeyl ether/OMCS/propylene glycol(PG) aqueous solutions. The addition of PG increased the solubility of oil in the isotropic surfactant phase. D phase emulsification method has been applied to a new type of cosmetics. By using this emulsification technique, O/W emulsion were formed without a need for adjust of HLB. Fine and stable W/O emulsions were prepared by D phase emulsion.

Fuel Cell operation at high temperature (e.g. 120 <SUP>o</SUP>C) and low relative humidity (e.g. 50%) remains challenging due to creep (in the case of Nafion<SUP>(</SUP>R)) and membrane dehydration. We approached this problem by filling PES 70, a sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) with a T<SUB>g</SUB> of 235 +/- 5 <SUP>o</SUP>C and a theoretical IEC of 1.68 mmol g<SUP>-1</SUP>, with 5-20% silica nano particles of 7 nm diameter and 390 +/- 40 m<SUP>2</SUP> g<SUP>-1</SUP> surface area. While simple stirring of particles and polymer solutions led to hazy, strongly anisotropic (air/glass side) and sometimes irregular shaped membranes, good membranes were obtained by ball milling. SEM analysis showed reduced anisotropy and TEM analysis proved that the nanoparticles are well embedded in the polymer matrix. The separation length between the ion-rich domains was determined by SAXS to be 2.8, 2.9 and 3.0 nm for PES 70, PES 70-S05 and Nafion<SUP>(</SUP>R) NRE 212, respectively. Tensile strength and Young's modulus increase with the amount of silica. Ex-situ in-plane proton conductivity showed a maximum for PES 70-S05 (2 mS cm<SUP>-1</SUP>). In the fuel cell (H<SUB>2</SUB>/air, 120 <SUP>o</SUP>C, <50%), it showed a current density of 173 mA cm<SUP>-2</SUP> at 0.7 V, which is 3.4 times higher than for PES 70.

<P>A series of novel 5'(7')-substituted-2'-oxospiro[1,3] dioxolane-2,3'-indoline-based N-hydroxypropenamides were designed, synthesized and evaluated for histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition and cytotoxicity. It was found that the compounds in this series displayed potent inhibitory effects against HDAC2 with IC50 values as low as 0.284 mu M, almost comparable to that of SAHA (IC50, 0.265 mu M), a positive control. In Western blot analysis, these compounds also exhibited noted inhibition toward histone deacetylation and this inhibition was found to correlate well with the cytotoxicity of the compounds in three human cancer cell lines. Docking studies indicated the compounds in this series bound to HDAC2 with high binding affinities (similar to -9.8 kcal/mol) compared to SAHA (-7.4 kcal/mol). (C) 2015 The Authors. Alkyl chain modified sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) for fuel cell applications

A new alkyl chain modified sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) (mPES) was synthesized and formed into membranes. The MEAs were tested in the PEMFC and evaluated systematically in the DMFC by varying the methanol concentration from 0.5 to 5.0 M at 60 <SUP>o</SUP>C and 70 <SUP>o</SUP>C. The synthesized mPES copolymer has been characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and gel permeation chromatography. The proton conductivity of the resulting membrane is higher than the threshold value of 10<SUP>-2</SUP> S cm<SUP>-1</SUP> at room temperature for practical PEM fuel cells. The membrane is insoluble in boiling water, thermally stable until 250 <SUP>o</SUP>C and shows low methanol permeability. In the H<SUB>2</SUB>/air PEMFC at 70 <SUP>o</SUP>C, a current density of 600 mA cm<SUP>-2</SUP> leads to a potential of 637 mV and 658 mV for 50 μm thick mPES 60 and Nafion NRE 212, respectively. In the DMFC, mPES 60's methanol crossover current density is 4 times lower than that for Nafion NRE 212, leading to higher OCV values and peak power densities. Among all investigated conditions and materials, the highest peak power density of 120 mW cm<SUP>-2</SUP> was obtained with an mPES 60 based MEA at 70 <SUP>o</SUP>C and a methanol feed of 2 M.

The extremely halophilic archaeon, Halorubrum halophilum B8<SUP>T</SUP> (=JCM 18963<SUP>T</SUP>, CECT 8278<SUP>T</SUP>) was isolated from salt-fermented seafood. We report here the draft genome of H. halophilum B8<SUP>T</SUP>, containing 3,677,984bp with a G+C content of 65.1%. The genome consists of 19 genes predicted to encode esterases.

Halolamina rubra CBA1107<SUP>T</SUP> (=CECT 8421<SUP>T</SUP>, JCM 19436<SUP>T</SUP>), an extremely halophilic archaeon, was isolated from non-purified solar salt in the Republic of Korea. H. rubra CBA1107<SUP>T</SUP> shows agarase activity, and its draft genome contains 2955,064bp with a G+C content of 69.0%. This is the first genome that has been sequenced in the genus Halolamina.

The electrochemical reduction of CO<SUB>2</SUB> using Cu<SUB>2</SUB>O nanoparticle decorated polyaniline matrix (PANI/Cu<SUB>2</SUB>O) in 0.1M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) and methanol electrolyte was investigated under ambient conditions. The experiment was carried out in a divided H-type two-compartment cell with a Nafion membrane as diaphragm separating the cathodic and anodic compartments. The catalyst was synthesized electrochemically as a thin film by using cyclic voltammetry and constant current mode deposition technique. The as-fabricated electrode was analyzed with various techniques to probe the nature and composition of the nanoparticles deposited onto the polyaniline matrix, which confirmed the presence of well-defined Cu (I) species in the film. The reduction of CO<SUB>2</SUB> was carried out at various polarization potentials; the main products were formic and acetic acid with faradaic efficiencies of 30.4% and 63.0% at a polarization potential of -0.3V vs. SCE (sat. KCl). A possible reduction pathway is through the formation of H<SUB>ad</SUB> atoms and subsequent transfer to CO<SUB>2</SUB> through the polymer film to form the products. An appreciable efficiency was achieved in the formation of formic acid and acetic acid with the developed catalyst.
