Polyakov loops and the Hosotani mechanism on the lattice

We explore the phase structure and symmetry breaking in four-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory with one spatial compact dimension on the lattice (16(3) x 4 lattice) in the presence of fermions in the adjoint representation with periodic boundary conditions. We estimate numerically the density plots of the Polyakov loop eigenvalues phases, which reflect the location of minima of the effective potential in the Hosotani mechanism. We find strong indications that the four phases found on the lattice correspond to SU(3)-confined, SU(3)-deconfined, SU(2) x U(1), and U(1) x U(1) phases predicted by the one-loop perturbative calculation. The case with fermions in the fundamental representation with general boundary conditions, equivalent to the case of imaginary chemical potentials, is also found to support the Z(3) symmetry breaking in the effective potential analysis.

<P>Interfaces of perovskite oxides, due to the strong interplay between the lattice, charge and spin degrees of freedom, can host various phase transitions, which is particularly interesting if these transitions can be tuned by external fields. Recently, ferromagnetism was found together with a seemingly insulating state in superlattices of manganites and titanates. We therefore study the (111) oriented (LaMnO3)(6-x)|(SrTiO3)(6+ x) (x = -0.5, 0, 0.5) superlattices by means of ab initio calculations, predicting a ferromagnetic ground state due to double exchange in all cases. We shed light on the ferromagnetic coupling in the LaMnO3 region and at the interfaces. The insulating states of specific superlattices can be understood on the basis of Jahn-Teller modes and electron/hole doping. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2017</P>

장기간의 매립지 배출물질의 저감을 통한, 다양한 매립지 안정화방법의 특성을 조사하기 위해 Lab-scale 실험과 모형 매립조 실험을 수행하였다. MBP(기계적 생물학적 전처리), 호기성 매립과 준호기성 매립(semi-aerobic), flushing 등의 방법을 전처리하지 않은 폐기물의 전형적인 매립방법인 혐기성매립과 비교연구 하였으며 다양한 방법의 조합을 통한 연구도 수행하였다. 기계적-생물학적 전처리에 준호기성 방법과 Flushing(PAF model)법의 조합에 의한 공기주입법을 조합하였을 때 각 방법의 시너지 효과를 나타내었다. 현재 본 연구는 진행중이며 더 나아가 full-scale 모델의 적응성을 평가하기 위한 연구가 필요하다고 할 수 있다. Lab-scale tests and a large lysimeter column were set up to investigate the behaviour of different options for achieving sustainability by reducing long term landfill emissions. The options which have been studied and compared with the traditional anaerobic landfill for unprocessed refuse were: mechanical- biological pretreatment, landfill aeration with forced and with natural advective air flow (semi-aerobic), flushing. Combination of different options have been experimented. The combination of mechanical- biological pretreatment, Aeration by the semi-aerobic method and Flushing (PAF model) seems to synergize the advantages of the individual options. The research is on going and further studies are necessary in order to assess the full-scale applicability of the model.

Study Design: This was a retrospective review of patients with compressive cervical radiculopathy treated with a minimally invasive anterior cervical foraminotomy (ACF). Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the results and complication rates of ACF in a consecutive series of patients and to report our clinical results of ACF as a minimally invasive technique in a series of 45 consecutive patients treated for compressive cervical radiculopathy. Overview of Literature: ACF is a motion-sparing procedure and an alternative to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and posterior cervical foraminotomy for direct nerve root decompression in patients with compressive cervical radiculopathy. Methods: The chart review recorded clinical and radiological features preoperatively and postoperatively and at follow-up (FU). The effect of prognostic factors was analyzed in relation to the clinical outcome. Results: Between January 2004 and October 2019, 45 patients (15 females and 30 males) with a mean age of 55.9 years (range, 28–78 years) underwent ACF for unilateral cervical radiculopathy. The global clinical outcome according to the MacNab scale was evaluated as excellent in 64.5% of patients (n=29), good in 28.9% (n=13), fair in 4.4% (n=2), and poor in 2.2% (n=1). The radiological FU was available for 73.3% (n=33). The statistical analysis revealed no influence of age, sex, operated level, and side on the clinical outcome. Only one patient (2.2%) exhibited spontaneous bone fusion at the operated level on FU after a right-sided C6–7 ACF with no clinical consequences. No patient presented with signs of delayed segmental instability. The overall reoperation rate of this series was 4.4%. Conclusions: ACF is a feasible and low-cost alternative to ACDF in selected patients with cervical radiculopathy. The use of tubular retractors in ACF may confer an added advantage that creates a safe corridor for direct cervical root decompression yet minimizing surrounding soft tissue retraction and avoiding unnecessary bone removal.
The Burden of Agoraphobia in Worsening Quality of Life in a Community Survey in Italy

Objective Current nosology redefined agoraphobia as an autonomous diagnosis distinct from panic disorder. We investigated the life-time prevalence of agoraphobia, its association with other mental disorders, and its impact on the health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). Methods Community survey in 2,338 randomly selected adult subjects. Participants were interviewed with the Advanced Neuropsy-chiatric Tools and Assessment Schedule (ANTAS), administered by clinicians. The diagnoses were based on the ICD-10 criteria. The Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12) was used to quantify HR-QoL. Results In the sample, 35 subjects met the criteria for agoraphobia (1.5%), with greater prevalence among women (2.0%) than men (0.9%): odds ratio (OR) 2.23; 95% CI: 1.0-5–2. Agoraphobia was more often seen among those with (n=26; 1.1%) than without (n=9; 0.4%) panic disorder: OR=8.3; 2.9–24.4. Co-morbidity with other mental disorders was substantial. The mean score of SF-12 in people with agoraphobia was 35.2±7.8, with similar levels of HR-QoL in people with (35.3±7.9) or without (34.8±7.3) panic disorder: ANOVA: F(1;33)=0.0; p=1.00. Conclusion One out of seventy people may suffer from agoraphobia in their lifetime. The attributable burden in terms of HR-QoL is substantial and comparable to the one observed for chronic mental disorders such as major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. The aim was to determine the relationship between muscle structure and meat quality traits in neuromuscular compartments (NMCs: R1, R2, R3, R4) of pig semitendinosus muscle. Barrows from the INTA-MGC genetic line (Argentina) were slaughtered at 100 kg body weight. In each NMC the following parameters were determined: the fibre types I, IIA, IIX and IIB by immunohistochemistry, the fibre cross sectional area (FCSA), the pH of meat after 24 h post-mortem ($pH_{24}$), instrumental meat tenderness (WB) and colour ($L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$). There were significant differences in the following: $L^*$ (R1 = R4<R2 = R3), $a^*$ (R1>R4>R2 = R3), $b^*$ (R1 = R4<R2 = R3), WB (R2>R1 = R3 = R4), $pH_{24}$ (R1 = R4>R2 = R3). The relative percentages of FCSA were as follows: I (R4>R1>R3>R2), IIA (R1>R4>R3>R2), IIX (R1 = R2 = R3 = R4) and IIB (R2>R3>R1>R4). The correlation values were statistically significant between IIB and WB (R1 and R4, $r_s$ = 0.66), (R2 and R3 $r_s$ = 0.74), IIB and $L^*$ (R1 and R4 $r_s$ = 0.84), IIX and $L^*$ without discriminating NMCs. Our data suggest that the NMC where the sampling takes place is important for determining meat quality traits because of the heterogeneity of the whole muscle.
