<P>We study the connection between the observed star formation rate-stellar mass (SFR-M-*) relation and the evolution of the stellar mass function (SMF) by means of a subhalo abundance matching technique coupled to merger trees extracted from an N-body simulation. Our approach consists of forcing the model to match the observed SMF at redshift z similar to 2.3, and letting it evolve down to z similar to 0.3 according to a tau model, an exponentially declining functional form that describes the star formation rate decay of both satellite and central galaxies. In this study, we use three different sets of SMFs: ZFOURGE data from Tomczak et al., UltraVISTA data from Ilbert et al., and COSMOS data from Davidzon et al. We also build a mock survey combining UltraVISTA with ZFOURGE. Our modeling of quenching timescales is consistent with the evolution of the SMF down to z similar to 0.3, with different accuracy depending on the particular survey used for calibration. We tested our model against the observed SMFs at low redshift, and it predicts residuals (observation versus model) within 1 sigma observed scatter along most of the stellar mass range investigated, and with mean residuals below 0.1 dex in the range similar to[10(8.7)-10(11.7)]M-circle dot. We then compare the SFR-M-* relation predicted by the model with the observed one at different redshifts. The predicted SFR-M-* relation underpredicts the median SFR at fixed stellar mass relative to observations at all redshifts. Nevertheless, the shapes are consistent with the observed relations up to intermediate-mass galaxies, followed by a rapid decline for massive galaxies.</P>
4-Methylcoumarin Derivatives Inhibit Human Neutrophil Oxidative Metabolism and Elastase Activity

Increased neutrophil activation significantly contributes to the tissue damage in inflammatory illnesses; this phenomenon has motivated the search for new compounds to modulate their effector functions. Coumarins are natural products that are widely consumed in the human diet. We have evaluated the antioxidant and immunomodulator potential of five 4-methylcoumarin derivatives. We found that the 4-methylcoumarin derivatives inhibited the generation of reactive oxygen species by human neutrophils triggered by serum-opsonized zymosan or phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate; this inhibition occurred in a concentration-dependent manner, as revealed by lucigenin- and luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence assays. Cytotoxicity did not mediate this inhibitory effect. The 7,8-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin suppressed the neutrophil oxidative metabolism more effectively than the 6,7- and 5,7-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarins, but the 5,7- and 7,8-diacetoxy-4-methylcoumarins were less effective than their hydroxylated counterparts. An analysis of the biochemical pathways suggested that the 6,7- and 7,8-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarins inhibit the protein kinase C-mediated signaling pathway, but 5,7-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin, as well as 5,7- and 7,8-diacetoxy-4-methylcoumarins do not significantly interfere in this pathway of the activation of the human neutrophil oxidative metabolism. The 4-methylcoumarin derivatives bearing the catechol group suppressed the elastase and myeloperoxidase activity and reduced the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical the most strongly. Interestingly, the 5,7-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin scavenged hypochlorous acid more effectively than the o-dihydroxy-substituted 4-methylcoumarin derivatives, and the diacetoxylated 4-methylcoumarin derivatives scavenged hypochlorous acid as effectively as the 7,8-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin. The significant influence of small structural modifications in the inhibitory potential of 4-methylcoumarin derivatives on the effector functions of neutrophil makes them interesting candidates to develop new drugs for the treatment of inflammatory diseases mediated by increased neutrophil activation.

Novel 6-aryl-2-methylnicotinic acid hydrazides 4a-c and their corresponding hydrazones 5a-c and 6a-i were synthesized. X-ray single crystal diffraction of 6h confirmed the chemical structure of hydrazones 6a-i. Antiproliferative activity of the synthetic compounds was investigated against K562 leukemia cell lines. Variable cell growth inhibitory activities were obtained with IC50 range from 24.99 to 66.78 μM where the compound 6c exhibited the maximum activity. Structure activity relationship analysis has been performed and a common pharmacophore model for the synthesized derivatives has been obtained by using the pharmacophore elucidation module of the software MOE. The best model obtained is characterized by two projected locations of potential H-bond donors (F3 and F4) and two Aromatic annotations (F1 and F2).
Changes in Speech Range Profile Are Associated with Cognitive Impairment

Background and Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the variations in the speech range profile (SRP) of patients affected by cognitive decline. Methods: We collected the data of patients managed for suspected voice and speech disorders, and suspected cognitive impairment. Patients underwent an Ear Nose and Throat evaluation and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). To obtain SRP, we asked the patients to read 18 sentences twice, at their most comfortable pitch and loudness as they would do in daily conversation, and recorded their voice on to computer software. Results: The study included 61 patients. The relationship between the MMSE score and SRP parameters was established. Increased severity of the MMSE score resulted in a statistically significant reduction in the average values of the semitones to the phonetogram, and the medium and maximum sound pressure levels (p<0.001). The maximum predictivity of MMSE was based on the highly significant values of semitones (p<0.001) and the maximum sound pressure levels (p=0.010). Conclusions: The differences in SRP between the various groups were analyzed. Specifically, the SRP value decreased with increasing severity of cognitive decline. SRP was useful in highlighting the relationship between all cognitive declines tested and speech.
