Prickly pear(Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten Makino, Cactaceae) is a tropical or subtropical plant, which is widely used as folk medicine for burned wound, edema and indigestion. Screening on the biological properties of the fruits(OFS-Fr) and stems(OFS-St) of the plant was carried out to prove the pharmacological significance. By hot plate and acetic acid-inducing writhing methods, significant analgesic effects of OFS-Fr and OFS-St were found in mice and anti-edemic effect was observed in carrageenin-induced inflammatory rats. However, the extracts showed no significant actions on central and autonomic nervous system and blood circulatory system, which imply no toxic effects to animal.
홍삼의 전처리에 의한 사염화탄소 및 갈락토사민 유발 간독성에 대한 보호효과

In present study, we examined whether or not the pretreatment of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) could protect hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄) and D-galatosamine (GalN). For this study, we not only tested activity of various plasma enzymes (AST, ALT, SDH, LDH), which are used as indicators of liver disease, but also checked the change of liver components such as lipid, glutathione and cytochromes content, and several liver enzyme<br/> activity. Pretreatment of KRG for two weeks significantly reduced the elevated plasma enzyme activities induced by CCl₄or GalN. Pretreatment of KRG also restored the hepatic enzymes, malonedialdehyde formation, and depletion of reduced glutathione content induced by CCl₄and GalN to near normal level. However, Y-glutamylcysteine synthetase activity was not affected by KRG. These results suggest that KRG shows the hepatoprotective effect by reducing lipid peroxidation, by reducing the activity of free radical generating enzymes, and by preserving the hepatic glutathione.
홍삼의 사염화탄소 및 갈락토사민 유발 간독성에 대한 치료효과

In this study, we investgated the effect of Red Ginseng (KRG) on liver damage induced by carbon tetrachloride (CTC) and galactosamine (GalN) in rats using indicator enzymes such as serum alanine/aspartate aminotransferases, sorbital dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, and Y-glutamyltransferase. Treatment of KRG restored these enzyme activities to near normal level compared to CTC or GalN treatment alone. Treatment of KRG also enhanced<br/> hepatic microsomal enzyme system, malondialdehyde formation, and depletion of reduced glutathione content, which were reduced by CTC or GalN. We also found that the decreased activities of glutathione S-transferase and glutathine reductase but not Y-glutamycysteine synthetase after KRG treatment restored to normal level. These results indicate that KRG has potent therapeutic activity against CTC- and GalN-induced hepatotoxicity in rat.

From the ethereal extract of the roots of Angelica koreana Max. (Umbelliferae) two furanocoumarins such as isooxypeucedanin and oxypeucedanin methanolate were newly isolated together with isoimperatorin, osthol, imperatorin, bergapten, oxypeucedanin and β-sitosterol.
저근백피성분의 생리활성에 관한 연구(III) - 디클로드메탄분획의 항암작용 -

The cytotoxic activities of methanolic extract and its fractions of Ailanthi Cortex Radicis and column chromatographic eluates of its dichloromethane fraction (DCM fr.) were investigated. DCM fr. Showed the strongest cytotoxicity against hepatoma cells. Furthermore, the active equates 1-3, 8 and 9 were obtained. Effects on free radical generation and the growth of vascular endothelial cells were tested to elucidate the action mechanism of anticancer activity. Eluates 1-3 stimulated free radical generation, while eluates 8 and 9 showed no changes. Especially, eluates 8 and 9 efffectively inhibited the proliferation of vascular endothelial cells in a dose- dependant manner. It is speculated that the anticancer effects of eluates 1-3, 8 and 9 might be due to free radical generation and inhibition of endothelial cell growth, respectively.

As a part of pharmacological studies of saikosaponins, which were reported to exhibit diverse biological activities especially concerning with liver function, effects of saikosaponin on metabolizing enzymes and lipid peroxide contents in liver were examined. As the result, UDP-glucose dehydrogenase activity and lipid peroxidation which were due to acetaminophen were inhibited by saikosaponin treatment. But other metabolizing enzyme activities were not modified.
간의 Bromobenzene 대사계에 미치는 Scoparone의 효과(I)

The effects of scoparone, one of coumarin derivative on the hepatic bromobenzene metabolizing enzyme system was estimated in rats. Scoparone pretreatment revealed dose-dependently the recovery of decrease in epoxide hydrolase activity due to the bromobenzene(310 mg/kg, i.p.) treatment. And also scoparone and scopoletin (each 5mg/kg, p.o.) pretreatments showed two times increase in the $V_{max}$ values compared to those of bromobenzene-treated group which were calculated from tripartite reciprocal plots. The mode of protective effect of scoparone against bromobenzene induced toxicity is considered to be due to the induction of microsomal enzyme activity by scopoletin, the intermediate metabolite of scoparone. The changes in cytochrome P-450 activity, aminopyrine N-demethylation, aniline hydroxylation and glutathione S-transferation in scoparone-treated group were not significantly different from those of the control group.
순산소 순환유동층 연소 조건에 따른 N<sub>2</sub>O 발생 및 제어 기술

순산소 연소 기술(Oxy-combustion technology)은 이산화탄소 포집 및 활용, 저장하는 기술 중 하나로써 공기분리장치(Air separation unit)에 의해 분리된 O<sub>2</sub>와 연소배가스의 이산화탄소를 이용하는 기술이며, 이를 응용한 초임계 발전과 NOx 발생 저감 등의 청정 화력발전 기술이다. 이를 석탄화력발전에 적용한 기술로써 순산소 순환유동층 연소(Oxy-fuel Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion, Oxy-CFBC) 과정에서, 로내 조건에 따라 아산화질소(N<sub>2</sub>O)가 발생될 수 있으며, 초미세먼지와 같은 가시적인 대기오염 문제를 일으키지 않아 N<sub>2</sub>O가스의 심각성에 대해 잘 알려지지 않고 있다. 그러나 N<sub>2</sub>O 가스의 지구온난화 기여 효과는 CO<sub>2</sub> 대비 약 310배에 해당하며, NO와 오존O<sub>3</sub>간 산소원자 치환반응으로 오존층 파괴를 촉진하고 있다. 이러한 심각성을 지닌 온실가스 N<sub>2</sub>O에 대한 주 배출원은 석탄화력발전에서 석탄표면 연소반응 및 NOx의 SCR 환원공정의 부반응에 의해 발생될 수 있으며, N<sub>2</sub>O의 생성과 분해 과정에 대한 뚜렷한 매커니즘이 밝혀지지 않고 있다. 본 연구에서는 순산소 순환유동층 연소(Oxy-CFBC)보일러에서 로내 실험 조건에 따른 N<sub>2</sub>O 발생 원인에 대해 다루고 있다. NOx의 환원을 위해 첨가한 요소수(urea, NH2CONH2) 및 암모니아(NH<sub>3</sub>) 투입량과 로내 연소온도를 변수로 하였으며, 이에 따른 N<sub>2</sub>O 농도 변화를 비교하였다. 환원제 비교실험에서, NOx 제거효과는 요소수가 암모니아에 비해 제거 우수성이 좋았으나, 요소수에 의한 NOx의 감소량 만큼 N<sub>2</sub>O가 발생하는 경향을 보였다. 한편, 암모니아(NH<sub>3</sub>)를 환원제로 공급할 경우 N<sub>2</sub>O의 증가경향이 명확하게 나타나지 않았다. 요소수 사용에 따른 N<sub>2</sub>O 발생원인은, 요소수의 로내 고온열분해로 생성된 이소시안산(iso-cyanic acid, HNCO)이 NOx를 환원시키는 과정에서 N<sub>2</sub>O가 발생된 것으로 판단되었다. 또한 연소로 온도증가에 따라 N<sub>2</sub>O 발생량은 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. Oxy-CFBC에서 발생되는 대용량 배가스 내 N<sub>2</sub>O 처리를 위해, 현재 개발중인 N<sub>2</sub>O 제어 기술에 대해 간략히 소개한다. 후연소 기술(afterburning technology)이 적용된 N<sub>2</sub>O 분해 기술은 탄화수소 환원제를 이용하여 비촉매 환원특성이 반영되었다. 본 연구 발표를 통해, Oxy-CFBC에서 온실가스 N<sub>2</sub>O 발생특성을 이해하고 후연소 기술이 적용된 N<sub>2</sub>O 분해 장치 개발에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Meliae toosendan Fructus is the fruit of Melia toosendan $S_{IEB}$. et $Z_{UCC}$. (Meliaceae), which is written in oriental terminology as clearing heat and drying dampness, and also explained using liver, stomach and small intestine for channels entered. Among the five fractions prepared from methanol whole extractive of the herb, the chloroform fraction which suggests the presence of triterpenoid, flavonoid and alkaloid stimulated the activities of drug metabolizing enzymes and bile secretion and lowered the serum transaminase activities of liver damaged by carbon tetrachloride.
