<P>We found that beta-lapachone (beta-lap), a novel bioreductive drug, caused rapid apoptosis and clonogenic cell death in A549 human lung epithelial cancer cells in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. The clonogenic cell death caused by beta-lap could be significantly inhibited by dicoumarol, an inhibitor of NAD(P)H:quinone oxido-reductase (NQO1), and also by siRNA for NQO1, demonstrating that NQO1-induced bioreduction of beta-lap is an essential step in beta-lap-induced cell death. Irradiation of A549 cells with 4 Gy caused a long-lasting upregulation of NQO1, thereby increasing NQO1-mediated beta-lap-induced cell deaths. Although the direct cause of beta-lap-induced apoptosis is not yet clear, beta-lap treatment reduced the expression of p53 and NF-kappaB, whereas it increased cytochrome C release, caspase-3 activity, and gammaH2AX foci formation. Importantly, beta-lap treatment immediately after irradiation enhanced radiation-induced cell death, indicating that beta-lap sensitizes cancer cells to radiation, in addition to directly killing some of the cells. The growth of A549 tumors induced in immunocompromised mice could be markedly suppressed by local radiation therapy when followed by beta-lap treatment. This is the first study to demonstrate that combined radiotherapy and beta-lap treatment can have a significant effect on human tumor xenografts.</P>

In this work, we explore the feasibility of roll-pitch-yaw integrated autopilots for high angle-of-attack missiles. An investigation of the aerodynamic characteristics of a surface-to-air missile is presented, which reveals the strong effects of cross coupling between the longitudinal and lateral dynamics. Robust control techniques based on $H_{\infty}$ synthesis are employed to design roll-pitch-yaw integrated autopilots. The performance of the proposed roll-pitch-yaw integrated controller is tested in high-fidelity nonlinear five-degree-of-freedom simulations accounting for kinematic cross-coupling effects between the lateral and longitudinal channels. Against nonlinearity and cross-coupling effects of the missile dynamics, the integrated controller demonstrates superior performance when compared with the controller designed in a decoupled manner.

Methyleugenol reduces cerebral ischemic injury by suppression of oxidative injury and inflammation

<P>The present study tested the cytoprotective effect of methyleugenol in an <I>in vivo</I> ischemia model (i.e. middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 1.5 h and subsequent reperfusion for 24 h) and further investigated its mechanism of action in <I>in vitro</I> cerebral ischemic models. When applied shortly after reperfusion, methyleugenol largely reduced cerebral ischemic injury. Methyleugenol decreased the caspase-3 activation and death of cultured cerebral cortical neurons caused by oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) for 1 h and subsequent re-oxygenation for 24 h. Methyleugenol markedly reduced superoxide generation in the ischemic brain and decreased the intracellular oxidative stress caused by OGD/re-oxygenation. It was found that methyleugenol elevated the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase. Further, methyleugenol inhibited the production of nitric oxide and decreased the protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase. Methyleugenol down-regulated the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the ischemic brain as well as in immunostimulated mixed glial cells. The results indicate that methyleugenol could be useful for the treatment of ischemia/inflammation-related diseases.</P>
초전도 한류기를 적용한 계통의 3상 단락사고에 대한 EMTDC 시뮬레이션

We have performed an EMTDC simulation for the current limiting effects of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). A three-phase fault in the 154 kV transmission line between the gaepo and Sungnam substations produced a fault current of up to 60kA. The SFCL with 100 Ω impedance after quench limited the current to 17kA within a half cycle. This limited current is well below the upper limit of a circuit breaker, suggesting the impedance of the SFCL in the transmission line is sufficient.
비파괴 검사법에 의한 주사전자현미경의 대물렌즈용 폴피스의 구조 분석

주사전자현미경용 마그네틱 렌즈 내부의 폴피스의 국산화를 위하여 비파괴 검사에 의한 내부 구조 파악과 소재의 기계적 특성 평가시험을 수행하였다. 원통형 폴피스는 상하단에 각각 링(ring) 모양의 순동(copper) 고리가 설치되어 있다. 폴피스 본체는 평균 입도가 110 ㎛인 armco 철이며, 냉간 가공에 의한 결조직이 관찰되지 않았다. 방사선 투과시험과 초음파 탐상시험을 통하여 상세도면을 확보하였다. 본체의 인장강도, 항복강도 및 연신율은 각각 24.5kg/㎟, 12.7 kg/㎟, 68%이며 경도는 64 H_B이었다. Structure of the pole piece in the magnetic lens of a scanning electron microscope was analyzed by non-destructive methods and its mechanical properties were determined to domestic design and manufacture. The cylindrical pole piece was made of armco steel with copper rings at near top and bottom regions with average grain size of 110 ㎛ without texture induced by cold working. The detail drawing was completed by radiography and acoustic emission analysis. The mechanical properties of the material such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness were 24.5 kg/㎟, 12.7 g/㎟, 68% and H_B, respectively

Churg-Strauss syndrome is a rare systemic vasculitis characterized by presence of asthma and eosinophilia. Survival was rare in pre--steroid era. After introduction of steroid, there have been much improvement in overall survival rate and median survival. The vascultic illness usually requires high dose steroid teratment for several weeks and responds well to corticosteroids. But mononeuritis multiplex responds to steroids more gradually and sometimes requires cytotoxic drugs such as azathioprine, hydroxyurea or cyclophophamide We report a 40 year-old asthmatic female with purpuric skin lesions, pain and paresthesia of both hands and feet, left foot drop and eosinophila. Skin and nerve biopsy demonstrated necrotizing vascultis with perivascular infiltration of eosinophils. Nerve conduction studies showed changes compatible with mononeuritis multiplex. Purpuric skin lesion disappeared and both eosinophilia and sedimentation rate decreased into normal range within a week after steroid treatment whereas neurologic symptoms

<P>We synthesized 1 (San78-130), a reversible version of L-783277, as a selective and potent ALK1 inhibitor. Our study showed that 1 possesses great kinase selectivity against a panel of 342 kinases and more potent activity against ALK1 than L-783277. Among the six ALK isotypes (ALK1-6), ALK1 is most significantly inhibited by compound 1. Compound 1 suppresses the BMP9-induced Smad1/5 pathway by mainly inhibiting ALK1 in C2C12 cells. Our molecular dynamics simulations suggest that H-bonding interaction between the C-4' hydroxyl group of 1 and Arg334 of ALK1 substantially contributes to the ALK1 inhibition. To the best of our knowledge, 1 is the first selective ALK1 inhibitor. Furthermore, compound 1 promoted angiogenesis in both endothelial tube formation and microfluidic chip based 3D angiogenesis assays, suggesting that 1 could be a lead compound for therapeutic angiogenesis agents. Our study may provide an insight into designing selective and potent inhibitors against ALK1.</P>
Phase Diagram of Physisorbed Argon Monolayer on Graphite

Studies on adsorption isotherms with sharp step-wised layer condensation help us better understanding on two-dimensional systems. We have presented vapor-pressure adsorption isotherm studies of argon films on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite in the monolayer region, by using a phase-modulated ellipsometric technique. The successive gas-liquid-solid phase transition observed during build up of a monolayer in Kr/graphite and Xe/graphite isotherms is not observed in any argon monolayer isotherms. The critical temperature, determined from the width in the chemical potential of the layer condensation step, is about 55.6 K, which is close to Migone’s capacity result. However if the background, known to come from the inhomogeneous nature of the graphite substrate, is considered, it is about 58 K. From our work and Migone’s heat-capacity results, we were able to complete a phase diagram of argon on graphite in the monolayer region. <
