Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

I-Muscone의 심혈관계에 관한 약리연구

In order to investigate the pharmacological properties of l-muscone, effects of l-muscone and musk were studied on the cardiovascular system with various experimental models. In isolated rat aorta, l-muscone and musk made the relaxation of blood vessels in maximum contractile response to phenylephrin (10^-6M) in endothelium-containing rings of the rat aorta, but not in endothelium-denuded rings. However, l-muscone and musk in the presence of the inhibitor of NO synthase and guanylate cyclase did not make the relaxation of blood vessel. In spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), l-muscone and musk slightly reduced blood pressure but significantly decreased heart rate. In the isolated perfused rat hearts. l-muscone and musk did not affect significantly on LVDP, contractile force, coronary flow and (-dp/dt)/(+dp/dt). These results suggest that l-muscone and musk have weak cardiovascular effects with relaxation of blood vessel and decrease of heart rate, but without significant cardiac functions.

Leaching and adsorption equilibria of Sr Chemical Species from the near field of a repository has been studied in solidified cement with Fe and oxidized Fe. The absorption percent, Ads %, and distribution coefficient, K_d were calculated using equilibrium concentration to predict the extent of leaching and adsorption. In the mixed aqueous solutions the Ads % increase as Cement(C)/Water(W) ratios increase and K_d was decreased for Sr. These behaviors were discussed by adsorption and equilibrium of spiked ions. Oxides Fe promoted adsorption of spiked ions, but pure Fe had no effect. E_h values were also estimated and discussed to elucidate oxidation-reduction environment of experimental system.

평판 충돌 미립자의 반발궤적

Experiments were conducted to get a better understanding of the rebound trajectory of impinging particle on a Flat Plate. The particle motion along the jet centerline relating to particle diameter impinging on a flat plate was visualized by using laser and a digital camera. The jet Reynolds number was 3300 and 8700, and glass beads of 30, 58 and 100㎛ in diameter were used. The photographs of particle motion trajectory show that one is impingement and rebound, which depends on the momentum of particle; and the other, which depends on the particle diameter and entrainment velocity of environment air during the second-impingement. The rebound height of particle increased with increasing particle diameter.

에틸 아크릴레이트 아이오노머의 성질에 미치는 양이온 크기의 영향

The effects of the size of cations on the properties of polyfethyl acrylate-co-metal acrylate) ionomers containing 3.8 mol% of ionic moiety were investigated. It was found that with changing cations, matrix T_(g)s seem to remain constant; however, cluster T_(g)s increase with decreasing the size of cations. Since ion-hopping occurs at a cluster T_(g) and the electrostatic force of ion pairs decreases with the size of ions increasing, it was suggested that the effect of the size of cation on a cluster T_(g) is operative, but not on a matrix T_(g). It was also found that activation energies for a cluster T_(g) were decreased with decreasing the size of cations; which means that the activation energy values for a cluster T_(g) are not directly related to the cluster T_(g)s. In the present study, the highest value of a cluster T_(g) for the Li ionomer may be one of the reasons why the Li ionomer has the lowest value for an activation energy.

金剛山댐 建設에 따른 北漢江 上流 水域의 環境 모니터링에 관한 硏究

Aquatic ecosystem was studies in Lake Paro to monitor the effects of the Keumkangsan Dam construction in North Korea. Water quality, primary prodectivity, and microbes were serveyed bimonthly in 1987. The texture and composition of sediments, and meterological sapects were also investigated. The most remarkable change of water quality was the increase of turbidity. due to the dam construction. Overall chemical and biological aspects were greatly changed because of the high turbidity. The concentration of phosphate increased and subsequently phytoplankto standing corp increased. The effect of phosphate increase was compensated by the decrease of light penetration, and, therefore areal primary prodectivity was not so high as expected from the chlorophyll concentration. From the standing corp of microbes, the trophic state of lake Paro was evaluated as mesotrophy. As for the horizontal variation of microbial activity, the microbial heterotrophy was higher in the upstream regions than in the downstream regions. Sediment types are almost clayey silt and the mean sizes of sediments were homogeneous through the whole lake area. Organic carbon contents of the sediment seemed to be influenced by seasonal variation of primary productivity.

신원방우황청심원액의 심혈관계에 관한 약효

In order to investigate the pharmacological properties of New Wonbang Woohwangchungsimwon Liquid (NSCL), effects of Wonbang Woohwangchungsimwon Liquid (SCL) and NSCL were compared. In isolated rat aorta, NSCL and SCL showed the relaxation of blood vessels in maximum contractile response to phenylephrine (10^-6M) regardless to intact endothelium or denuded rings of the rat aorta. Furthermore, the presences of the inhibitor of NO synthase and guanylate cyclase did not affect the relaxing effect of NSCL and SCL. NSCL and SCL inhibited the vascular contractions induced by acetylcholine, prostaglandin endoperoxide or peroxide in a dose-dependent manner. In conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), NSCL and SCL significantly decreased heart rate. NSCL and SCL, at high doses, had a negative inotropic effect that was a decrease of left ventricular developed pressure and (-dp/dt)/(+dp/dt) in the isolated perfused rat hearts, and also decreased the contractile force and heart rate in the isolated rat right atria. In excised guinea-pig papillary muscle, NSCL and SCL had no effects on parameters of action potential such as resting membrane potential, action potential amplitude, APD_90 and V_max at low doses, whereas inhibited the cardiac contractility at high doses. These results suggested that NSCL and SCL have weak cardiovascular effects with relaxation of blood vessels and decrease of heart rate, and that this effect is no significant differences between cardiovascular effects of two preparations.

急性 骨髓性 白血病 患者 1例에 對한 臨床報告

AML is the most common type of leukemia in adults. AML(acute myeloid leukaemia) is characterised by a rapid accumulation of abnormal white blood cells in the blood and bone marrow, resulting in severe anemia, and possibly infection, and hemorrhage during the course of the disease. In general the prognosis of patient with relapsed AML is poor. At this time, however, the only potentially curative therapy for relapsed patients is allogeneic BMT(bone marrow transplantation). This clinical study were carried out 1 case of female patient aged 44 with relapsed AML treated by herb medicine. At the time of admission, she complained of mild fever, nausea, vomitting, abdominal pain, anorexia and no sign of bleeding. For the 10 days of admission, she was treated with Oriental-Western medicine and all the symptoms were disappeared. After that, the syptoms were aggravated because of secondary infection. Anyway, above result showed the possibility of Oriental therapy as Supportive Care in AML.

Mark Twain의 社會批評

It is my thesis that Mark Twain's social criticism was firmly based on his Americanism, not on such ideas as are proposed by Maxwell Geismar, who seems to suggest that Mark Twain declare the fall of his country. I think this is too much. Twain's social criticism was influnced, first of all, by his intense Americanism, the love of his country. In fact, Twain's strong Americanism showed itself in many ways; at times, he became quite jingoistic. His bitter and serious criticism of the American civilization is nothing but his explosion of the conflict between appearance and reality of democracy. Although Twain could find nobility and goodness in individuals, he regarded the human race collectively as stupid, mean, and despicable. He hated its sham and pretense, its hypocrisy, its vain pretensions, its cruelty and injustice, its lust for killing, its moral cowardice, its peversity. Twain's "damned human race" attitude was most pronounced in his later years when he was beset by a number of personal tradegies, traces of it can be found in his early sketches. These traces have been collected in this paper. Unedrneath the sparkling humor lay important moral and social criticism. It was unfortunate that he was regarded as a professional "funny man" without no particular literary ability except his unique sense of humor. His masterful use of language, the sharpness of descriptive detail, his vivid portrayal of character in his writings are to be emphasized; yet, his role as moralist and social critic should be pushed to the front, since his writings present much incisive comment on human society. Twain's acceptance of the philosophy of mechanistic determinism was never a complete one, and as a result there always remained a strange dichotomy in his view of man. On the other hand, his heart was filled with pity and sympathy for doomed mankind, the victim of forces beyond his control. He also raged at the human race, thus tacitly admitting a glimmer of hope for human betterment. The ambivalence of Mark Twain's view of man is reflected in his writings. But at heart Twain was also a romantic idealist and he believed that man's ideal could be trained upwards within the limits prescribed by his make. It was this glimpse of hope for mankind which prodded him into his role as moralist and social satirist. In this paper, Twain's Americanism, his ideal of democracy, his ideas for individual and society and his strong hatred for monarchy hove been investigated. He is a sharp and critical examiner of life, and his writings abound in incisive comment; however, he seldom has the patience to get to the core of the matter. This is his weakness as a social critic. As a result he frequently jumps to conclusions before he has thoroughly explored all aspects of the problem. His hasty judgements frequently lead him to hold contradictory views simultaniously. Thus, for instance, he repeatedly states his determinstic concept of man as a machine, but at the same time he reiterates his belief in the possibility of fostering higher ideas through training. In conclusion, I would like to add that Mark Twain's moral and social criticism suffers from his hit-and-run technique. This defect in him gives the impression of superficial thinking, even though he is a more profound thinker than most people realize.

Copolyesters containing oxybenzoate as a rigid rod molecule and methylene group and dimethyl tetramethyl disiloxane as flexible spacers were prepared by room temperature solution polymerization for the purpose of the developement of polymeric composite materials. The thermal properties and the characteristics of the polymers were investigated by DSC and a polarizing microscope. The polymers may be formed nematic liquid crystal phase, and the thermodynamic characteristics of their mesophase to isotropic phase transition could be explained on the basis of its structural features.
