Inhibin is a gonadal hormone composed of an α- subunit and one of two β-subunits (βA, βB), and its primary role is to inhibit FSH secretion by the pituitary. To investigate the roles of inhibin α in the reproductive system, an expression plasmid, pCMV-rINA, with the rat inhibin α cDNA fused to the cytomegalovirus promoter, was introduced into muscle by direct injection. Inhibin α mRNA was detected in the muscle by RT-PCR and Southern blot analysis. Inhibin protein was also detected, and Western blot analysis revealed a relatively high level of serum inhibin, but not of activin βA. The estrous cycle of the pCMVrINA- injected mice was extended, but there was no change in levels of pituitary FSH mRNA or serum FSH and no ovarian cysts were observed. When injected female mice were mated with males of proven fertility, litter size increased. Surprisingly, the embryos of pregnant females injected with pCMV-rINA, were retarded in growth and had defects in internal organs. When male mice were injected, testicle weight increased slightly without any noticeable change in the histology of the seminiferous tubules. Taken together, our data indicate that the inhibin α subunit influences a number of the reproductive functions of female mice.
Characteristics of domain wall pinning and depinning in a three-terminal magnetic Y-junction

<P>The characteristics of domain wall (DW) pinning and propagation in a three-terminal magnetic Y-junction were investigated, where the junction consisted of two input and one output wires. The output switching depends strongly on the junction angle (α). Junctions with high angles of α>9.5° lead to DW pinning at the junction, whereas junctions with low angles of α<9.5° have no DW pinning effect. At the critical angle of α = 9.5°, the Y-junction showed a multimode DW propagation, which was ascribed to a moderate transverse field effect.</P>

<P>We have studied the influence of the insertion of a nano-oxide layer (NOL) into a magnetic GMR spin-valve. It was found that the spin-valve with NOL has a higher GMR ratio than that of the normal spin-valve without NOL. Naturally formed NOL without vacuum break shows a uniform layer, which effectively suppresses the current shunt, resulting in the reduction of the sheet resistance of GMR. The NOL spin-valve also shows a lower interlayer coupling (<I>H</I>in) than that of the optimal normal spin-valve, which is consistent with AFM measurement showing lower roughness of NOL formed CoFe surface. Based on the advantage of NOL, we succeeded in lowering <I>H</I>in while maintaining GMR ratio by insertion of NOL inside the CoFe free layer, where the free layer consists of CoFe/NOL/CoFe/NOL/Capping layer.</P>
Expression of a sperm flagellum component encoded by the <i>Als2cr12</i> gene

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Genes exclusively expressed in male germ cells encode proteins that play important roles in spermatogenesis and fertilization. In this study, we investigated the expression of a novel spermatogenic cell-specific gene known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 2 chromosome region candidate 12 (<I>Als2cr12)</I>. Our in silico and in vitro analyses revealed that the mouse <I>Als2cr12</I> gene produces two transcript isoforms by alternative splicing and that one of the isoforms is unique to spermatogenic cells. Using an antibody against the ALS2CR12 protein, we found that a protein from the germ cell-specific <I>Als2cr12</I> transcript is present in mature sperm from the epididymis as well as germ cells in the testis. Further analysis of the ALS2CR12 protein in sperm disclosed the localization of the protein in the sperm tail. Specifically, our data suggest that the ALS2CR12 protein is associated with the fibrous sheath in the sperm flagellum. Thus, our study provides the first information regarding the expression of the <I>Als2cr12</I> gene at the transcriptional, protein and cellular levels.</P>

<P>15-Deoxy-Δ<SUP>12,14</SUP>-prostaglandin J<SUB>2</SUB> (15d-PGJ<SUB>2</SUB>) and activin are implicated in the control of apoptosis, cell proliferation, and inflammation in cells. We examined both the mechanism by which 15d-PGJ<SUB>2</SUB> regulates the transcription of activin-induced activin receptors (ActR) and Smads in HepG2 cells and the involvement of the nuclear factor-<I><I>κ</I></I>B (NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways in this regulation. Activin A (25 ng/mL) inhibited HepG2 cell proliferation, whereas 15d-PGJ<SUB>2</SUB> (2 <I><I>μ</I></I>M and 5 <I><I>μ</I></I>M) had no effect. Activin A and 15d-PGJ<SUB>2</SUB> showed different regulatory effects on ActR and Smad expression, NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B p65 activity and MEK/ERK phosphorylation, whereas they both decreased IL-6 production and increased IL-8 production. When co-stimulated with 15d-PGJ<SUB>2</SUB> and activin, 15d-PGJ<SUB>2</SUB> inhibited the activin-induced increases in ActR and Smad expression, and decreased activin-induced IL-6 production. However, it increased activin-induced IL-8 production. In addition, 15d-PGJ<SUB>2</SUB> inhibited activin-induced NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B p65 activity and activin-induced MEK/ERK phosphorylation. These results suggest that 15d-PGJ<SUB>2</SUB> suppresses activin-induced ActR and Smad expression, down-regulates IL-6 production, and up-regulates IL-8 production via suppression of NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B and MAPK signaling pathway in HepG2 cells. Regulation of ActR and Smad transcript expression and cytokine production involves NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B and the MAPK pathway via interaction with 15d-PGJ<SUB>2</SUB>/activin/Smad signaling.</P>

인터넷 사용은 청소년들에게 사이버강의, 메신저를 토한 의사소통, 정보수집, 취미나 여가활동 등으로 일상생활에서 필수적인 것으로 자리 잡고 있다. 그러나 지나치게 인터넷을 사용해 인터넷 중독으로 일상생활에서 부적응을 겪고 있는 청소년들이 많다. 연구 결과 생활수준이 어렵고, 켬퓨터와 인터넷의 사용기간이 길고, 인터넷 용도가 학습보다는 게임시간이 길수록 인터넷 중독이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 인터넷 중독정도에 따른 자기통제력은 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타나 인터넷 중독정도가 높은 집단이 낮은 집단보다 자기통제력이 낮았다. 이 결과 인터넷 중독정도는 자기통제력과 관련이 있음을 알 수 있다. 자기통제력이 낮은 청소년들은 쉽게 인터넷에 중독될 경향이 높기 때문에 부모들의 관심과 통제가 필요하다. 인터넷을 유용하게 활용하는 것과 오락성 게임 등에 집착해 중독되는 것은 차원이 다르다. 청소년들의 가정환경을 점검하는 것부터 시작하여 우리 사회 전체의 관심과 대응이 필요하다. The Internet has become an indispensable tool for teenagers who use it for cyber lectures, messenger-based communication, information collection, hobby, and leisure activities. Many teenagers, however, have difficulty in adjusting to their everyday life because of an excessive use of the Internet. This research shows that teenagers who belong to lower-income families, who use computers and the Internet for long hours, and who use the Internet for games rather than studying are more likely to become addicted to the Internet. Furthermore, a significant correlation between the degrees of Internet addiction and self-control was found. Teenage groups marked by higher degrees of Internet addiction evinced lower degrees of self-control. The research finding therefore shows that the degree of Internet addiction is related to self-control. Because teenagers characterized by lower self-control are more likely to becomevictims of Internet addiction, they need parents special care and control. The Internet can benefit as well as entrap its users. To prevent Internet addiction of teenagers, it is necessary for the whole society to examine family environments of teenagers and implement care as well as policy measures.
