      • Investigation of Bu,d→(π,K)π decays within unparticle physics

        Chen, Chuan-Hung,Kim, C.S.,Yoon, Yeo Woong Elsevier 2009 Physics letters: B Vol.671 No.2

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We investigate the implication of unparticle physics on the Bu,d→(π,K)π decays under the constraints of the Bd,s–B¯d,s mixing. We found that not only the unparticle parameters that belong to the flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) processes but also scaling dimension dU could be constrained by the Bd,s–B¯d,s mixing phenomenology. Employing the minimum χ2 analysis to the Bu,d→(π,K)π decays with the constraints of Bd,s mixing, we find that the puzzle of large branching ratio for Bd→π0π0 and the discrepancy between the standard model estimation and data for the direct CP asymmetry of B+→K+π0 and Bd→π+π− can be resolved well. However, the mixing induced CP asymmetry of Bd→KSπ0 could not be well accommodated by the unparticle contributions.</P>

Augmentation of Thermotolerance in Primary Skin Fibroblasts from a Transgenic Pig Overexpressing the Porcine HSP70.2

        Chen, Ming-Yu,Tu, Ching-Fu,Huang, San-Yuan,Lin, Jyh-Hung,Tzang, Bor-Show,Hseu, Tzong-Hsiung,Lee, Wen-Chuan Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2005 Animal Bioscience Vol.18 No.1

A high environmental temperature affects the economic performance of pigs. Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) has been reported to participate importantly in thermotolerance. This study aims to produce transgenic pigs overexpressing porcine HSP70.2, the highly inducible one of HSP70 members, and to prove the cellular thermotolerance in the primary fibroblasts from the transgenics. A recombinant plasmid in which the sequence that encodes the porcine HSP70.2 gene is fused to green fluorescence protein (GFP) was constructed under the control of cytomegalovirus (CMV) enhancer and promoter. Two transgenic pigs were produced by microinjecting pCMV-HSP70-GFP DNA into the pronucleus of fertilized eggs. Immunoblot assay revealed the varied overexpression level (6.4% and 1.4%) of HSP70-GFP in transgenic pigs. After heating at $45^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, the survival rate (78.1%) of the primary fibroblast cells from the highly expressing transgenic pig exceeded that from the non-transgenic pig (62.9%). This result showed that primary fibroblasts overexpressing HSP70-GFP confer cell thermotolerance. We suggest that transgenic pigs overexpressing HSP70 might improve their thermotolerance in summer and therefore reduce the economic loss in animal production.

Combined Assessment of Serum Alpha-Synuclein and Rab35 is a Better Biomarker for Parkinson’s Disease

        Hung-Li Wang,Chin-Song Lu,Tu-Hsueh Yeh,Yu-Ming Shen,Yi-Hsin Weng,Ying-Zu Huang,Rou-Shayn Chen,Yu-Chuan Liu,Yi-Chuan Cheng,Hsiu-Chen Chang,Ying-Ling Chen,Yu-Jie Chen,Yan-Wei Lin,Chia Chen Hsu,Huang-Li 대한신경과학회 2019 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.15 No.4

Background and Purpose It is essential to develop a reliable predictive serum biomarker for Parkinson’s disease (PD). Te accumulation of alpha-synuclein (αSyn) and up-regulated expression of Rab35 participate in the etiology of PD. Te purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the combined assessment of serum αSyn and Rab35 is a useful predictive biomarker for PD. Methods Serum levels of αSyn or Rab35 were determined in serum samples from 59 sporadic PD patients, 19 progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) patients, 20 multiple system atrophy (MSA) patients, and 60 normal controls (NC). Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves were calculated to determine the diagnostic accuracy of αSyn or/and Rab35 in discriminating PD patients from NC or atypical parkinsonian patients. Results The levels of αSyn and Rab35 were increased in PD patients. The serum level of Rab35 was positively correlated with that of αSyn in PD patients. Compared to analyzing αSyn or Rab35 alone, the combined analysis of αSyn and Rab35 produced a larger area under the ROC curve and performed better in discriminating PD patients from NC, MSA patients, or PSP patients. When age was dichotomized at 55, 60, 65, or 70 years, the combined assessment of αSyn and Rab35 for classifying PD was better in the group below the cutof age than in the group above the cutof age. Conclusions Combined assessment of serum αSyn and Rab35 is a better biomarker for discriminating PD patients from NC or atypical parkinsonian patients, and is a useful predictive biomarker for younger sporadic PD patients.

Search for a light-charged Higgs in a two-Higgs-doublet type II seesaw model at the LHC

Chen, Chuan-Hung,Nomura, Takaaki North-Holland Pub. Co 2017 Physics letters. Section B Vol.767 No.-

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A charged Higgs in the type II two-Higgs-doublet model (THDM) has been bounded to be above a few hundred GeV by the radiative <I>B</I> decays. A Higgs triplet extension of the THDM not only provides an origin of neutrino masses and a completely new doubly-charged Higgs decay pattern, but it also achieves a light-charged Higgs with a mass of O ( 100 ) GeV through the new scalar couplings in the scalar potential. It was found that these light-charged Higgs decays depend on its mass m H ± , tan ⁡ β , and mixing effect sin ⁡ θ ± : at tan ⁡ β = 1 , if m H ± > m W + m Z , b ¯ b W ± , W ± Z , and <I>τν</I> are the main decay modes; however, if m H ± < m W + m Z , the main decay modes are then b ¯ b W and <I>τν</I>, and at tan ⁡ β = 30 , the <I>τν</I> mode dominates the other decays. When m t > m H ± + m b , we found that the ATLAS and CMS recent upper bounds on the product of BR ( t → H + b ) BR ( H + → τ + ν ) can be directly applied and will give a strict constraint on the correlation of m H ± and sin ⁡ θ ± . If the upper bound of BR ( t → H + b ) BR ( H + → τ + ν ) is satisfied (escaped) for m t > ( < ) m H ± + m b , it was found that the significance of discovering the charged Higgs through H ± → W ± Z is much lower than that through H ± → b ¯ b W ± . With a luminosity of 100 fb − 1 at s = 13 TeV and including the experimental bounds, the significance of the H ± → b ¯ b W ± signal can reach around 6.2 ( 2.4 ) σ for m H ± < ( > ) m W + m Z .</P>

      • Phenomenology of an SU(2)1×SU(2)2×U(1)Y model at the LHC

        Chen, Chuan-Hung,Nomura, Takaaki American Physical Society 2017 Physical Review D Vol.95 No.1

<P>We investigate the implications of a minimal SU(2) gauge symmetry extension of the standard model at the LHC. To achieve the spontaneous symmetry breaking, a heavy Higgs doublet of the SU(2) is introduced. To obtain an anomaly- free model and the decays of new charged gauge bosons, we include a vectorlike quark doublet. We also employ a real scalar boson to dictate the heavy Higgs production via the gluon-gluon fusion processes. We find that the new gauge coupling and the masses of new gauge bosons can be strictly bounded by the electroweak rho-parameter and dilepton resonance experiments at the LHC. We find that due to the new charged gauge boson enhancement, the cross sections for a heavy scalar boson to diphoton channel measured by ATLAS and CMS can be easily satisfied when the values of Yukawa couplings are properly taken. Furthermore, by adopting event simulation, we find that the significance of pp -> (gamma gamma)(H) + jet, where the diphoton is from the heavy Higgs decay, can be over 4 sigma when the luminosity is above 60 fb(-1).</P>

Post-Traumatic Cerebral Infarction Following Low-Energy Penetrating Craniocerebral Injury Caused by a Nail

        Chen, Po-Chuan,Tsai, Shih-Hung,Chen, Yu-Long,Liao, Wen-I The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2014 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.55 No.5

Post-traumatic cerebral infarction (PTCI) is a secondary insult which causes global cerebral hypoxia or hypoperfusion after traumatic brain injury, and carries a remarkable high mortality rate. PTCI is usually caused by blunt brain injury with gross hematoma and/or brain herniation. Herein, we present the case of a 91-year-old male who had sustained PTCI following a low-energy penetrating craniocerebral injury due to a nail without evidence of hematoma. The patient survived after a decompressive craniectomy, but permanent neurological damage occurred. This is the first case of profound PTCI following a low-energy penetrating craniocerebral nail injury and reminds clinicians of possibility this rare dreadful complication for care of head-injured patients.

      • Characterization of Protein Arginine Methyltransferases in Porcine Brain

Hung, Chien-Jen,Chen, Da-Huang,Shen, Yi-Ting,Li, Yi-Chen,Lin, Yi-Wei,Hsieh, Mingli,Li, Chuan Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2007 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.40 No.5

Protein arginine methylation is a posttranslational modification involved in various cellular functions including cell signaling, protein subcellular localization and transcriptional regulation. We analyze the protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) that catalyze the formation of methylarginines in porcine brain. We fractionated the brain extracts and determined the PRMT activities as well as the distribution of different PRMT proteins in subcellular fractions of porcine brain. The majority of the type I methyltransferase activities that catalyze the formation of asymmetric dimethylarginines was in the cytosolic S3 fraction. High specific activity of the methyltransferase was detected in the S4 fraction (high-salt stripping of the ultracentrifugation precipitant P3 fraction), indicating that part of the PRMT was peripherally associated with membrane and ribosomal fractions. The amount and distribution of PRMT1 are consistent with the catalytic activity. The elution patterns from gel filtration and anion exchange chromatography also indicate that the type I activity in S3 and S4 are mostly from PRMT1. Our results suggest that part of the type I arginine methyltransferases in brains, mainly PRMT1, are sequestered in an inactive form as they associated with membranes or large subcellular complexes. Our biochemical analyses confirmed the complex distribution of different PRMTs and implicate their regulation and catalytic activities in brain.

Bounds on LFV Higgs decays in a vector-like lepton model and searching for doubly charged leptons at the LHC

Chen, Chuan-Hung,Nomura, Takaaki Springer 2016 European Physical Journal C Vol. No.

<P>The Higgs-portal lepton flavor violation is studied in a vector-like lepton model. To avoid the constraints from rare Z.-> l(j)(+/-)l(j)(-/+) decays, we introduce two triplet vectorlike leptons, (1, 3)(-1) and (1, 3)(0). The resultant branching ratio for h. -> mu tau can be up to 10(-4) when the constraints from the invisible Z decays are applied. As a result, the signal strength for the tau tau channel has a 12 % deviation from the standard model prediction, while the muon g - 2 is two orders of magnitude smaller than the data, and BR(tau -> mu gamma) is of the order of 10(-12). A predicted doubly charged lepton in pp collisions at root s = 13 TeV is analyzed, and it is found that the interesting production channels are pp -> (Psi(-)(1) (-)Psi(++)(1),Psi 1(+/-+/-)Psi(-/+)(1)). Both single and pair production cross sections of Psi(++)(1) are comparable, and can be a few hundred fb. The main decay channels for the doubly charged lepton are Psi(+/-+/-) -> l(+/-) W-+/-, and for the heavy singly charged lepton they are Psi(+/-)(1) -> nu W-+/-, l(+/-)Z. The numerical analysis is carried out with regard to 13 TeV LHC with 100 fb(-1) luminosity.</P>

        Charged-Higgs on $$R_{D^{(*)}}$$ R D ( ∗ ) , $$\tau $$ τ polarization, and FBA

        Chen, Chuan-Hung,Nomura, Takaaki Springer-Verlag 2017 European Physical Journal C Vol.77 No.9

<P>We study the influence of a charged-Higgs on the excess of branching fraction ratio, R-M = BR((B) over bar -> M tau (v) over bar (tau))/BR((B) over bar -> Ml (v) over bar (l)) (M = D, D*), in a generic two-Higgs-doublet model. In order to investigate the lepton polarization, the detailed decay amplitudes with lepton helicity are given. When the charged-Higgs is used to resolve excesses, it is found that two independent Yukawa couplings are needed to explain the R-D and R-D* anomalies. We show that when the upper limit of BR(B-c -> tau(v) over bar (tau)) < 30% is included, RD can be significantly enhanced while R-D* < 0.27. With the BR(B-c -> tau(v) over bar (tau)) constraint, we find that the tau-lepton polarizations can be still affected by the charged- Higgs effects, where the standard model ( SM) predictions are obtained: P-D(tau) approximate to 0.324 and P-D*(tau) approximate to -0.500, and they can be enhanced to be P-D(tau) approximate to 0.5 and P-D*(tau) approximate to -0.41 by the charged-Higgs. The integrated lepton forward-backward asymmetry (FBA) is also studied, where the SM result is (A) over bar (D()(FB)*(),tau) approximate to -0.359(0.064), and they can be enhanced ( decreased) to be (A) over bar (D()(FB)*(),tau) approximate to -0.33(0.02).</P>
