Visual Attentional Pattern of the Eyewitness in a Mock Crime with Weapon Presence

The weapon focus effect is defined as eyewitnesses focus more on weapons than other details(e.g., perpetrator) of the crime scene which cause memory bias. The present study investigated how the presence of a weapon affects the visual attention and memory of the eyewitness. Participants were randomized within two groups: the weapon focus effect condition(WC) and the novelty condition(NC). The participants' visual attention pattern(dwell time) was measured while participants were observing the interaction between the two individuals(clerk and customer) at the mock crime slide show. At the end of the experiment, the participants were asked about what they saw on the slide show. As a result, it was confirmed that the weapon condition showed a different attention pattern from those in the non-weapon condition. Overall, both groups were found to spend more time on target objects(knife/cashier's check), but WC participants spent longer time on clerks when weapons were presented than NC participants. On the other hand, in both groups, there was no difference in memory. This study provided evidence for the visual attention patterns of eyewitnesses at simulated crime scenes with weapons.
Wi-Fi Backscatter Systems for IoT Sensors with Enhanced Communication Reliability

IoT 기술이 발전함에 따라 배터리 문제가 대두되었다. 미국의 워싱턴 대학에서 저전력으로 Tag를 동작시키는 Wi-Fi 백스케터 기술을 처음 제시하였다. 그러나 이 방식은 전송 성능 및 전송률이 낮다는 단점이 있었다. 이를 개선하기 위해 Tag에서 에너지를 조절하는 M-레벨 변조 방식을 통해 전송률을 높이는 방법이 제시되었다. 그러나 M-레벨 변조 방식은 낮은 SNR환경에서 신뢰성이 떨어지는 문제점이 있었다. 본 논문에서는 딥러닝 기반의 수신기를 구성함으로써 낮은 SNR 환경에서도 Wi-Fi backscatter 시스템의 성능을 높일 수 있도록 하였다. 또한, Tag의 구성을 그대로 적용하기 때문에 전송률뿐 아니라 Tag에서 배터리가 필요하지 않으며, 사용되는 에너지가 적다는 장점도 있다. 제안하는 딥러닝 방식은 2-level일 때 22dB SNR 환경에서 10-3 BER 성능을 확인하였다.

It is difcult to calculate monitor units in the proton treatment planning system due to the complexity of using this system in the double scattering mode of proton therapy. Moreover, the range and spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) values using the conversion algorithm (CONVALGO) provided by IBA (Crange, CSOBP) are diferent from the actual measured range (Mrange) and SOBP (MSOBP) values. In this regard, the CONVALGO (FC) value (FCrange, FCSOBP) should be measured according to the quality assurance (QA) of patient treatment, which requires physical efort and time. This study, therefore, aimed to reduce the time and efort spent on QA. The predictive model was trained using six parameters. Main option, sub-option, Mrange and MSOBP were used as input values, and FCrange and FCSOBP were used as label. The trained model predicted the CONVALGO (PC) values of PCrange and PCSOBP. The test dataset has 261 patient data that were not used for training. Diference, mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) values were used for comparison. Compared to the FC value, the maximum diference was −2.2 mm for PCrange and −3.4 mm for Crange. The acceptable standard of patient QA in our institute is within 1 mm and the number of data points that met the acceptable standard was 196 for PCrange and 191 for Crange. For the MAE of PCSOBP, options 1, 2, and 3 showed values within 1 mm. In the MAE of CSOBP, the values were>1 mm for all options.

<B>ABSTRACT</B><P>The reactive α-oxoaldehydes such as glyoxal (GO) and methylglyoxal (MG) are generated <I>in vivo</I> from sugars through oxidative stress. GO and MG are believed to be removed from cells by glutathione-dependent glyoxalases and other aldehyde reductases. We isolated a number of GO-resistant (GO<SUP>r</SUP>) mutants from <I>Escherichia coli</I> strain MG1655 on LB plates containing 10 mM GO. By tagging the mutations with the transposon Tn<I>phoA</I>-132 and determining their cotransductional linkages, we were able to identify a locus to which most of the GO<SUP>r</SUP> mutations were mapped. DNA sequencing of the locus revealed that it contains the <I>yqhC</I> gene, which is predicted to encode an AraC-type transcriptional regulator of unknown function. The GO<SUP>r</SUP> mutations we identified result in missense changes in <I>yqhC</I> and were concentrated in the predicted regulatory domain of the protein, thereby constitutively activating the product of the adjacent gene <I>yqhD</I>. The transcriptional activation of <I>yqhD</I> by wild-type YqhC and its mutant forms was established by an assay with a β-galactosidase reporter fusion, as well as with real-time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR. We demonstrated that YqhC binds to the promoter region of <I>yqhD</I> and that this binding is abolished by a mutation in the potential target site, which is similar to the consensus sequence of its homolog SoxS. YqhD facilitates the removal of GO through its NADPH-dependent enzymatic reduction activity by converting it to ethadiol via glycolaldehyde, as detected by nuclear magnetic resonance, as well as by spectroscopic measurements. Therefore, we propose that YqhC is a transcriptional activator of YqhD, which acts as an aldehyde reductase with specificity for certain aldehydes, including GO.</P>

Insects and animals can recognize surrounding environments by detecting thousands of chemical odorants. Olfaction is a complicated process that begins in the olfactory epithelium with the specific binding of volatile odorant molecules to dedicated olfactory receptors (ORs). OR proteins are encoded by the largest gene superfamily in the mammalian genome. We report here the whole genome analysis of the olfactory receptor genes of S. scrofa using conserved OR gene specific motifs and known OR protein sequences from diverse species. We identified 1,301 OR related sequences from the S. scrofa genome including 1,113 functional OR genes and 188 pseudogenes. OR genes were located in 46 different regions on 16 pig chromosomes. We classified the ORs into 17 families, three Class I and 14 Class II families, and further grouped them into 349 subfamilies. We also identified inter- and intra-chromosomal duplications of OR genes residing on 11 chromosomes. A significant number of pig OR genes (n=212) showed less than 60% amino acid sequence similarity to known OR genes of other species. We also performed a similar analysis on the cattle OR subgenome and identified 1,071 OR related sequences. We show that S. scrofa has one of the largest OR repertoires, suggesting an expansion of OR genes in the swine genome. Considering available information from literature, it seems that OR systems between mammals and insects possess high similarity in their action mechanisms and rapid evolutionary changes due to differences in living environments.
Modeling and Control of an Electronic-Vacuum Booster for Vehicle Cruise Control

A mathematical model and control laws for an Electronic-Vacuum Booster (EVB) for application to vehicle cruise control will be presented. Also this paper includes performance test result of EVB and vehicle cruise control experiments. The pressure difference between the vacuum chamber and the apply chamber is controlled by a PWM-solenoid-valve. Since the pressure at the vacuum chamber is identical to that of the engine intake manifold, the output of the electronic-vacuum booster is sensitive to engine speed. The performance characteristics of the electronic-vacuum booster have been investigated via computer simulations and vehicle tests. The mathematical model of the electronic-vacuum booster developed in this study and a two-state dynamic engine model have been used in the simulations. It has been shown by simulations and vehicle tests that the EVB-cruise control system can provide a vehicle with good distance control performance in both high speed and low speed stop and go driving situations.<br/>
SYAN 환경에서 드론 및 IoT 장비를 위한 무선통신 시스템

본 논문에서는 채널 환경이 일반적인 채널 환경과 다르게 매우 열악한 채널 환경을 가진 선박 내부(Ship)와 선박 건조 지역(Yard)에서 드론 및 IoT장치와 같은 다중 무선장치를 고려한 CI-OFCDM 방식의 무선 통신 시스템에 대해 제안한다. 이 결과 전파의 난반사 및 전파 전송 경로의 불확실성이 높은 SYAN (Ship and Yard Area Network) 환경에서의 무선 통신 성능을 향상시킬 수 있다. 제안하는 시스템은 MATLAB 시뮬레이션을 통해 성능을 확인하였다.
