Objectives: Bone loss after bariatric surgery is well recognized but the best method for quantifying bone mineral density (BMD) remains controversial. BMD measured with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is prone to measurement errors in this population while quantitative computed tomography (QCT) is less affected. We report the skeletal changes after bariatric surgery at 1-year in a multi-ethnic Asian cohort using both central DXA and QCT. Methods: Areal BMD (aBMD) and volumetric BMD (vBMD) of twenty-two participants (mean age 40.6; female 59%) undergoing sleeve gastrectomy (n ¼ 12) or gastric bypass (n ¼ 10) were measured with central DXA and QCT respectively before and 12-months after surgery. Results: Weight and BMI decreased significantly but discordant QCT and DXA results were noted. aBMD was significantly reduced at the total hip (TH) and femoral neck (FN) by 6.9 and 8.5% respectively but was not significantly different at the lumbar spine (LS). By contrast, there were no significant changes in vBMD at TH and FN. Instead, a significant 11.2% decrease in vBMD was noted at the LS. These findings were largely similar between the two surgical subgroups. Interestingly, cortical vBMD increased at both TH and FN while trabecular vBMD decreased at the TH. These changes were observed despite no significant post-operative changes in serum calcium, iPTH or 25-OH vitamin D levels. Conclusion: Technical or physiological factors may be involved in the discordance between QCT and DXA results during short-term follow-up and the most suitable method of bone density measurement for post-bariatric surgery patients remains uncertain. © 2015 The Korean Society of Osteoporosis. Synthesis and Experimental Implementation of DSP Based Backstepping Control of Positioning Systems
Chang, Jie,Tan, Yaolong The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2007 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.7 No.1
Novel nonlinear backstepping control with integrated adaptive control function is developed for high-performance positioning control systems. The proposed schemes are synthesized by a systematic approach and implemented based on a modern low-cost DSP controller, TMS320C32. A baseline backstepping control scheme is derived first, and is then extended to include a nonlinear adaptive control against the system parameter changes and load variations. The backstepping control utilizes Lyapunov function to guarantee the convergence of the position tracking error. The final control algorithm is a convenient in the implementation of a practical 32-bit DSP controller. The new control system can achieve superior performance over the conventional nested PI controllers, with improved position tracking, control bandwidth, and robustness against external disturbances, which is demonstrated by experimental results.

Bareogonalos xibeidai Tan and van Achterberg, 2017 (Hymenoptera: Trigonalyidae) was newly recognizedin South Korea. The species was reared from the nest cells of the Korean yellowjacket, Vespula koreensiskoreensis Radoszkowski, 1887 (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), which is a new host record for the trigonalidspecies. Diagnoses and images of the species and genus are provided in the present study.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The influence of <I>A</I>-site deficiency on the relaxor properties in the lead-free (1-<I>x</I>)(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-<I>x</I>BaTiO3 solid solution system was studied by intentionally reducing Na content in reference to the stoichiometric compositions. We observed that for all compositions, the higher the level of Na deficiency was, the lower the transition temperature from a ferroelectric to relaxor state became. The compositions with intermediate BaTiO3 contents (<I>x</I> = 0.06, 0.09, 0.13, and 0.40) showed sprout-shaped strains and pinched polarization curves at room temperature, indicating a crossover from a non-ergodic relaxor to ergodic relaxor state above a certain level of Na deficiency. We demonstrate that the presence of recently proposed oxygen octahedral tilt disorder as a prerequisite for the relaxor features in this system is not necessarily true, but the presence of stress-field-induced defect dipoles matters. A transmission electron microscopy confirmed that micro domains break down into nano domains with increasing Na deficiency level.</P>

<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>We present a polarization-sensitive optical detection platform for label-free quantitative optical biosensing diagnosis using liquid crystals (LCs). This is capable of determining quantitatively the optical birefringence of optical cells containing LCs, whose orientation depends on the immobilized biomolecules.</P><P><B>Patients and methods</B></P><P>This technique uses a polarization-dependent double-port detection without any polarizer at a single wavelength and removes the need of aligning optical cells of LCs in the azimuthal direction, with respect to the light path through the optical cell. Thus, this technique enables a stand-alone detection in a relatively compact format without an additional optical instrument, such as a retardation compensator, a Michael–Levy chart, and a spectrophotometer, in order to determine the optical birefringence quantitatively.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>We demonstrate that bovine serum albumin immobilized on the gold surface of the cell hybrid interfaces that support both homeotropic and planar anchoring of LCs causes optical phase retardation change which can be determined quantitatively. The estimated limit of bovine serum albumin detection is approximately 2.1 μM.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>This optical technique with LCs can serve an optical platform for label-free quantitative diagnosis of proteins in a real time manner.</P>

Hydroacoustic surveys were performed to clarify the density and spatial distribution of fish upstream and downstream of Changzhou Dam in the Pearl River, China, with regard to the condition of the spillways. Fish were densely distributed in the forebay of the upstream dam and the average fish density was 0.22 individuals/㎥ under open spillways on 24 June 2010, but when the spillways were closed on 25 June 2010, the fish in the upstream dam dispersed and the average fish density decreased to 0.007 individuals/㎥. Meanwhile, the average fish density in the downstream region was 0.28 individuals/㎥ before the spillway was opened on 24 May 2010, but it decreased to 0.08 individuals/㎥ on 26 June, just after the spillway was closed. The vertical distribution of fish upstream of the dam was not consistent. The target strength (TS) of fish upstream of the dam was larger than that of fish in the downstream region, although the distribution of TS was similar between the upstream and downstream regions. Therefore, we concluded that while numerous fish could swim to the upstream region while the spillways were open, closed spillways obstructed fish migrating upward from the downstream region.

We report on cyclic anisotropic magnetoresistance change induced by current pulse injection in perpendicularly magnetized Co/Ni nanowire. By alternating the polarity of the injection pulse, domain walls (DWs) can be deterministically created and annihilated within the nanowire. The injection induces a combined effect of spin transfer torque and Oersted field that leads to simultaneous creation and driving of DWs in the nanowire. DWcreated by single pulse injection exhibits a fixed depinning field. For multi-pulse injection, the depinning field increases and this is ascribed to the formation of DWs with opposite chirality.

Long duty hours have been associated with significant medical errors, adverse events, and physician “burn-out”. An innovative night float (NF) system has been implemented in our internal medicine program to reduce the negative effects of long duty hours associated with conventional full-call systems. However, concerns remain if this would result in inadequate training for interns. We developed a structured questionnaire to assess junior doctors’ perceptions of the NF system compared to full calls, in areas of patient safety, medical training, and well-being. Ninety-seven (71%) of the 137 doctors polled responded. Ninety-one (94%) felt the NF system was superior to the full call system. A strong majority felt NF was beneficial for patient safety compared to full call (94% vs. 2%, p<0.001). The NF system was also perceived to reduce medical errors (94% vs. 2%, p<0.001) and reduce physician “burn-out” (95% vs. 5%, p<0.001). Beyond being a practical solution to duty-hour limitations, there was a significant perceived benefit of the NF system compared to the full call in terms of overall satisfaction, patient safety, reducing medical errors and physician “burn-out”.
