:Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is an important vegetable crop in the world and contains various health promoting compounds including many antioxidants such as lycopene and beta-carotene. Genetic diversity of cultivated watermelon is very narrow, which is one of major factors limiting the improvement of watermelon breeding program. Gummy stem blight (Didymella bryoniae (Auersw.)) is one of the most destructive diseases and causes crown blight, defoliation and fruit rot, resulting in severe production loss in watermelon. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), important molecular markers for genetic studies are frequent sequence variation in the plant genome. This study was performed to develop SNP markers related to gummy stem blight resistance from three watermelon lines, one susceptible and two resistant to gummy stem blight. Of them, 22 SNP primers which were sequence information on SNPs derived from comparing a resistant and susceptible line was used for high resolution melt analysis. A total of 14 candidate SNP primers were detected melt temperature difference. These SNP primers can be useful for developing disease resistance-related markers and, therefore, beneficial to watermelon breeding program.

Swine dysentery caused by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, an anaerobic, beta-hemolytic spirochete, is a severe mucohemorrhagic diarrheal disease that primarily affects pigs during the growing and finishing period. The current standard laboratory procedure to culture and identify B hyodysenteriae takes 3 to 7 days. This report present a rapid PCR for detection B hyodysenteriae in a single reaction using DNA from swine intestinal samples. The PCR produced a specific 421bp PCR product with template DNA purified from B hyodysenteriae, and the accuracy for detection of B hyodysenteriae by PCR results compared with those of conventional method was 100% in intestinal specimens. Nonspecific bands were not detected with B innocens, a nonpathogenic common inhabitant spirochete, including other enteric bacterial organisms. This procedure could detect as little as 50 pg of template DNA for B hyodysenteriae.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is one of the most economically important cucurbitaceous crop over the world. Anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum orbiculare, result to severe damage to cucurbits worldwide. Anthracnose is a typical plant disease which significantly affecting the yield of cucurbit crop. Pathogeneis-related (PR) proteins are well-known plant defense proteins against pathogens. Therefore, we observed PR genes expression patterns when watermelon got anthracnose disease. We did RT-PCR experiment to evaluate differences of PR genes expression pattern among Au-Producer(R), one of the representative of resistance watermelon varieties against anthracnose, and 920533(S), one of the representative of susceptible watermelon varieties against anthracnose. As a result, there were differences of the expression of several PR genes between the R and S watermelon. Analysis of the function of these genes is expected to perform in the future.

Significant penetration of induction motor loads into residential neighborhood and commercial regions of local transmission systems at least partially determine a vulnerability to a fault induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) event. Highly concentrated induction motor loads with constant torque could stall in response to low voltages associated with system faults. FIDVR is caused by wide spread stalling of small HVAC units (residential air conditioner) during transmission level faults. An under voltage load shedding scheme (UVLS) can be an effective component in a strategy to manage FIDVR risk and limit the any potential disturbance. Under Voltage Load Shedding take advantage of the plan to recovery the voltage of the system by shedding the load ways to alleviation FIDVR.

The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of Brachyspira hyodysenteriae from 43 swine farms with diarrhea or a history of diarrhea in Gyeongbuk province by PCR. The overall herd prevalence of B hyodysenteriae was 37.2%(16/43), and the average prevalence of B hyodysenteriae among all sampled pigs was 10.8%(50/462). Positive herds for B hyodysenteriae were distributed throughout Gyeongbuk province from 14.3~50%. Herd size had A effect on the frequency of B hyodysenteriae. The frequency of B hyodysenteriae in herds with less than 1,000 pigs was 47.4%, That of herds between 1,001 and 2,000 pigs was 41.7%. Also, the frequency of B hyodysenteriae in herds with more than 2,000 pigs was 16.7%.
Lessons from 30 years` data of Korean end-stage renal disease registry, 1985-2015

The Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN) launched a nationwide official survey program about dialysis therapy in 1985. Nowadays, the accumulated data for 30 years by this “Insan Prof. Min Memorial end-stage renal disease (ESRD) Registry” program have been providing the essential information for dialysis clinical practice, academic nephrology research, and health management policy. We reviewed 30 years of data to identify important changes and implications for the future improvement of dialysis therapy in Korea. Hemodialysis patients, especially diabetics and elderly patients have increased in number very rapidly during recent years in Korea. The Korean prevalence rate of ESRD patients was about 70% of the United States and about 50% of Japan according to the international comparisons in the annual data report of United States Renal Data System. The blood pressure control, anemia control, and dialysis adequacy have continuously improved year by year. The importance of calcium and phosphorus control has also been increasing because of the increase in long-term dialysis patients. In addition, chronic dialysis complications should be closely monitored and dialysis modifications, such as hemodiafiltration therapy, might be considered. Because of the increase of private clinics and nursing hospitals in dialysis practice, the role of dialysis specialists and continuing education are thought to be essential. For strict cost-effective dialysis control of increasing elderly, diabetic, and long-term dialysis patients, the KSN ESRD patient registration should be run by the KSN and health ministry in cooperation, in which the dialysis fee reimbursement should be accompanied.

Diabetic nephropathy is the most frequent cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. Dialysis patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have more complications and shorter survival duration than non-DM dialysis patients, requiring more clinical attention and difficult management. The registry committee of the Korean Society of Nephrology has collected data about dialysis therapy in Korea through an on-line registry program and analyzed the characteristics of patients. A survey of dialysis patients in 2016 showed that 50.2% of new dialysis patients had DM nephropathy as the cause of end-stage renal disease. The proportion of patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) for more than 5 years was 38% in DM patients and 51% in non-DM patients. The mean pulse pressure in DM HD patients was 71.5 mmHg, compared with 62.6 mmHg in non-DM patients. The proportion of DM patients with native vessel arteriovenous fistula as vascular access for HD was lower than that of non-DM patients (73% vs. 78%). Mean serum creatinine of DM and non-DM dialysis patients was 8.4 mg/dL and 9.5 mg/dL respectively. As vascular access of the DM HD patients was poor, the dialysis adequacy of DM patients was slightly lower than that of non- DM patients. The 5-year survival rate for DM HD patients was 53.9%, which was much lower than that of chronic glomerulonephritis patients (78.2%). The proportion of patients with a full-time job was 17% for DM patients and 28% for non-DM patients.

Glutaredoxin (Grx) is a 12-kDa thioltransoferase that reduces disulfide bonds of other proteins and maintains the redox potential of cells. In addition to its oxidoreductase activity, we report here that a rice Grx(OsGrx) can also function as a GSH-dependent peroxidase. Because of this antioxidant activity, OsGrx protects glutamine synthetase from oxidative damage. Individually replacing the conserved Cys residues in OsGrx with Ser shows that Cys^(23), but not Cys^(26), is essential for the thioltransferase and GSH-de-pendent peroxidase activities. Kinetic Characterization of OsGrx reveals that the maximal catalytic efficiency (V_(max)/K_(m))is obtained with cumene hydroperoxide rather than H_(2)O_(2) or t-butyl hydroperoxide.
