Power domain NOMA to support group communication in public safety networks

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (PD-NOMA) with successive interference cancellation (SIC) on the receiver side has drawn great attention recently as a promising multiple-access scheme for next-generation (5G) mobile-communication systems. PD-NOMA utilizes the power domain for user multiplexing, which allows users to share resources to increase the system spectral efficiency, so as to improve system throughput. In this paper, we introduce an PD-NOMA application scenario, i.e., supporting group communication in public safety network. Because of the power-difference requirements of users in the PD-NOMA system, for the group communications, the number of users who can share these resources is limited; and the cryptographic keys thus cannot be distributed to user equipment efficiently. To solve this problem, we investigate combining PD-NOMA and spatial multiplexing technologies to meet the demand for high spectral efficiency. That is, we present a scheme for combining PD-NOMA with space shift keying (SSK) modulation, namely PD-NOMA-SSK, to help meet the demand for high spectral efficiency by exploiting the additional spatial domain. At the same time, we also suggest that the system throughput can be further enhanced by using PD-NOMA-SSK with multi-input multi-output (MIMO) multiplexing technology. The simulation results confirm the validity of the proposed schemes by comparing them with the conventional SSK and MIMO multiplexing schemes.</P>
Charge carrier mobility study of a mesogenic thienothiophene derivative in bulk and thin films

A novel mesogenic 2,5-bis-(5-octylthiophene)-thieno[3,2b]thiophene (TT) derivative has been synthesized. The fused-ring thiophene, end-capped with two octylthiophenes, exhibits ordered lamellar mesophases which were characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and small-angle X-ray diffraction at various temperatures. The charge transport properties were investigated by time-of-flight technique as a function of temperature. On cooling from isotropic phase, a maximum hole mobility value of 0.07cm<SUP>2</SUP>V<SUP>-1</SUP>s<SUP>-1</SUP> was measured in the highly ordered mesophase of the bulk films. Field-effect transistor experiments on both solution and vacuum deposited thin films have also been performed. The solution-processed films exhibit charge carrier mobilities several orders of magnitude lower than values extracted from bulk time-of-flight curves and from vacuum deposited thin film transistors. This work provides evidence that the melt-processing route is an efficient alternative to commonly used solution-processing for fabrication of charge transporting layers from liquid crystalline semiconductors, with performances comparable to evaporation techniques.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is highly prevalent in older men and causes substantial adverse effects on health. The pathogenesis of this disease is not totally clear. Recent reports have suggested a possible relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and BPH. Single components of MetS (obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance) as well as the syndrome itself may predispose patients to a higher risk of BPH and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). This may stem from changes in insulin resistance, increased autonomic activity, impaired nitrergic innervation, increased Rho kinase activity, pro-inflammatory status, and changes in sex hormones that occur in association with MetS. However, the exact underlying mechanisms that regulate the potential relationship between MetS and BPH/LUTS still need to be clarified. Increased physical activity and dietary strategies may help in decreasing the incidence of MetS and its impact on BPH/LUTS. However, differences in the definitions used to address the examined predictors and endpoints preclude the possibility of arriving at definitive conclusions.
