      • Late Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic arc-related magmatism in southeastern Korea: SHRIMP zircon geochronology and geochemistry

        Phanerozoic granitoids are widespread in the Korean Peninsula and form a part of the East Asian Cordilleran-type granitoid belt extending from southeastern China to Far East Russia. Here we present SHRIMP zircon U-Pb ages and geochemical and Nd isotopic compositions of Late Paleozoic to Early Jurassic granitoid plutons in the northern Gyeongsang basin, southeastern Korea; namely the Jangsari, Yeongdeok, Yeonghae, and Satkatbong plutons. The granite and associated gabbroic rocks from the Jangsari pluton were coeval and respectively dated at 257.3+/-2.0Ma and 255.7+/-1.4Ma. This result represents the first finding of a Late Paleozoic pluton in South Korea. Three granite samples from the Yeongdeok pluton yielded a slightly younger age span ranging from 252.9+/-2.5Ma to 246.7+/-2.1Ma. Two diorite samples from the Yeonghae pluton gave much younger ages of 195.1+/-1.9Ma and 196.3+/-1.6Ma. An Early Jurassic age of 192.4+/-1.6Ma was also obtained from a diorite sample from the Satkatbong pluton. The mineral assemblage and Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>/(Na<SUB>2</SUB>O+K<SUB>2</SUB>O) versus Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>/(CaO+Na<SUB>2</SUB>O+K<SUB>2</SUB>O) relationship indicate that all the analyzed plutons are subduction zone granitoids. Enrichments in large-ion-lithophile-elements and depletions in high-field-strength-elements of these plutons are also concordant with geochemical characteristics typical for the subduction zone magma. The presence of Late Permian to Early Triassic arc system is in contrast with the conventional idea that the arc magmatism along the continental margin of the Korean Peninsula has commenced from Early Jurassic after the termination of Triassic collisional orogenesis. The ε<SUB>Nd</SUB>(t) values of the granitoid plutons are consistently positive (2.4-4.6), suggesting that crustal residence time of the basement beneath the Gyeongsang basin is relatively short. Moreover, the reevaluation of previously-published data reveals that geochemical compositions of the Yeongdeok pluton are compatible with those of high-silica adakites; La/Yb=37.5-114.6, Sr/Y=138.2-214.0, SiO<SUB>2</SUB>=62.9-72.0wt.%, Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>=15.5-17.0wt.%, Sr=562-1173ppm, MgO=0.4-1.6wt.%, Y=3-6ppm, Yb=0.18-0.45ppm, and Eu/Eu*=0.92-1.31. The occurrence of adakites in southeastern Korea, and presumably in the Hida belt of central-western Japan, is indicative of a hot subduction regime developing at least partly along the East Asian continental margin during the Permian-Triassic transition period.

      • 자유드로잉 제품과 패드를 설치한 드로잉 제품의 특성

        본 연구는 자체 제작한 전체 패드가 부착된 드로잉 금형을 이용하여 SUS, 연강, AI, 6:4황동 판재를 드로잉 가공하여 생산된 제품의 특성을 자유드로잉 하여 얻은 제품의 특성과 비교 분석하였다. SUS 판재의 경우 제품에 발생하는 현상은 벽 주름, 구변주름, 수직 파단, 드로잉상처, 이어링이 발생하였으며 길이변화는 펀치어깨부분에서 가장 많이 늘어남을 볼 수 있었고 벽 주름 부분에 있어서 접혀진 부분은 상대적으로 적게 늘어남을 볼 수 있었다. 연강 판재는 SUS 판재에서 보여준 현상을 나타내었으나 SUS 판재에 비해 수직 파단은 적게 일어난 반면 이어링이 더 크게 일어났다. AI 판재의 경우 수직 파단은 일어나지 않았으나 플랜지 주름과 밑면터짐이 발생하였다. 6:4황동의 경우는 전체패드의 AI 판재 드로잉에서와 같이 밑면터짐과 플랜지 주름의 발생이 일어났다.

        TRIM72 negatively regulates myogenesis via targeting insulin receptor substrate-1

        Lipid rafts have been known to be platforms to initiate cellular signal transduction of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) inducing skeletal muscle differentiation and hypertrophy. Here, tripartite motif 72 (TRIM72), with a really interesting new gene (RING)-finger domain, a B-box, two coiled-coil domains, and a SPRY (SPla and RYanodine receptor) domain, was revealed to be predominantly expressed in the sarcolemma lipid rafts of skeletal and cardiac muscles. Adenoviral TRIM72 overexpression prevented but RNAi-mediated TRIM72 silencing enhanced C2C12 myogenesis by modulating the IGF-induced insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) activation through the molecular association of TRIM72 with IRS-1. Furthermore, myogenic activity was highly enhanced with increased IGF-induced Akt activation in the satellite cells of TRIM72<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice, compared to those of TRIM72<SUP>+/+</SUP> mice. Because TRIM72 promoter analysis shows that two proximal E-boxes in TRIM72 promoter were essential for MyoD- and Akt-dependent TRIM72 transcription, we can conclude that TRIM72 is a novel antagonist of IRS-1, and is essential as a negative regulator of IGF-induced muscle differentiation.

      • Regeneration of thyroid follicles from primordial cells in a murine thyroidectomized model

        <P>The functional unit of the thyroid gland, the thyroid follicle, dynamically responds to various stimuli to maintain thyroid hormone homeostasis. However, thyroid follicles in the adult human thyroid gland have a very limited regenerative capacity following partial resection of the thyroid gland. To gain insight into follicle regeneration in the adult thyroid gland, we observed the regeneration processes of murine thyroid follicles after partial resection of the lower third of the thyroid gland in 10-week-old male C57BL/6 mice. Based on sequential observation of the partially resected thyroid lobe, we found primitive follicles forming in the area corresponding to the central zone of the intact lateral thyroid lobe. The primitive thyroid follicles were multiciliated and had coarsely vacuolated cytoplasm and large vesicular nuclei. Consistently, these primitive follicular cells did not express the differentiation markers paired box gene-8 and thyroid transcription factor-1 (clone SPT24), but were positive for forkhead box protein A2 and leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptor 4/GPR48. Follicles newly generated from the primitive follicles had clear or vacuolar cytoplasm with dense, darkly stained nuclei. At day 21 after partial thyroidectomy, the tall cuboidal follicular epithelial cells had clear or vacuolar cytoplasm, and the intraluminal colloid displayed pale staining. Smaller activated follicles were found in the central zone of the lateral lobe, whereas larger mature follicles were located in the peripheral zone. Based on these observations, we propose that the follicle regeneration process in the partially resected adult murine thyroid gland associated with the appearance of primitive follicular cells may be a platform for the budding of differentiated follicles in mice.</P>

      • A compound (DW1182v) protecting high glucose/palmitate-induced glucolipotoxicity to INS-1 beta cells preserves islet integrity and improves hyperglycemia in obese db/db mouse

        Loss of beta cells is a pathogenic cause for the development of type 2 diabetes. High glucose/free fatty acid (HG/FFA)-induced glucolipotoxicity was thought to play a role in the beta cell loss. Thus, application of small molecules capable of preventing HG/FFA-induced glucolipotoxicty to beta cells could be an avenue for a therapeutic intervention for the development of type 2 diabetes. We screened a representative library supplied from Korean Chemical Bank for prevention of high glucose/palmitate (HG/PA)-induced viability reduction of INS-1 beta cells and were able to identify a new small molecule (DW1182v) with a function to protect HG/PA-induced glucolipotoxicity. The protective effect was specific to HG/PA-induced beta cell death since DW1182v did not protect streptozotocin- or cytokine-induced INS-1 cell death. The protective effect by DW1182v was likely due to the reduction of death-promoting endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress responses such as phospho-C-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP). Treatment of obese diabetic db/db mice with DW1182v preserved islet integrity and thus increased insulin secretion and lowered blood glucose after glucose infusion. These results suggest that a small molecule protecting HG/PA-induced glucolipotoxicity to beta cells can be a new therapeutic candidate to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.

      • 결정질 태양전지에서 니켈 전극 상요을 위한 열처리 방안

        고효율 태양전지를 위한 결정질 태양전지의 구조 중 UNSW에서 개발한 BCSC(buried contact solar cell)가 있는데, 이는 전면 전극을 laser 처리 후 무전해니켈 도금으로 형성한 것이다. 이같은 진면 전극을 형성하기 위해서는 무전해 nickel 도금 후 열처리가 필수적이다. 우리는 이 공정을 확립하기 위해 결정질 wafer에 후연을 PECVD로 SiNx막을 형성하여 30Ω/□로 도핑한 후 후면을 불산으로 제거한 상태에서 양면을 니켈 무전해 도금으로 전극을 형성하여 300℃, 350℃, 400℃에 서 각각 3,6,9분간 진행하였다. 그 결과 400℃에서 3분간 열처리된 sample이 상대적으로 가장 명확한 IV curve를 형성하였다. 이 실험의 결과는 PN 접합 구조에서 전극을 nickel로 사용할 때 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.

      • The effects of orientation changes in indium tin oxide films on performance of crystalline silicon solar cell with shallow-emitter

        In this study, a cost effective and low temperature approach to fabricate a shallow-emitter crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cell using a low sheet resistance, and highly transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) as an antireflection layer is presented. Deposited films with either (400) or (222) predominant planes were obtained by varying the substrate temperature. Better crystallization, good electrical properties, higher optical gap, and higher work function were observed for the films with (400) predominant planes; however, the transmittance in the near-infrared region suffered from free-carrier absorption effect. These ITO films were applied to replace the conventional SiN<SUB>x</SUB> film, as an antireflection coating for a c-Si solar cell with shallow-emitter having a sheet resistance of 100Ω/@?. Using the optimal condition, the photovoltaic parameter of the device yielded an open-circuit voltage and fill factor of up to 604mV and 81.59%, respectively, resulting in an efficiency of 17.27%. This photovoltaic conversion efficiency, based on the c-Si solar cell with shallow-emitter, is relatively higher than that of the current reports.

      • Path-tracking simulation and field tests for an auto-guidance tillage tractor for a paddy field

        The application of an auto-guided tractor to rice cultivation in Korean paddy fields may be limited by tire slippage and headland turning due to wet soil conditions and the use of small-sized fields<1ha. This study examines the development of a computer simulator capable of virtually testing the motion of a tractor based on a look-ahead distance method in a real-time 3D graphic environment. The tractor motion was simulated based on the dynamic model of a vehicle that considered the effects of tire slippage and side force imparted by soil. The validity of the computer simulation was confirmed by a paved road test, thereby providing tracking trajectories similar to those obtained from the road test. However, an oscillation in the steering angle, ranging from -8 to +5deg., occurred when the tractor traveled on straight paths. This oscillation might be related to the limitations of the electric motor in controlling the tractor's hydraulic steering system due to the non-linear response of the hydraulic actuator to the rotation of the steering wheel by motor torque. In an arable field (90mx25m), the auto-guided tractor followed the predefined path including C-shape headland turning with acceptable tracking, showing RMS lateral errors ranging from 3.8 to 12.8cm on the straight paths. However, RMS lateral errors obtained on the curved paths increased to 100cm when the tractor traveled in a wet sub-field with moisture content>30%, thereby requiring more accurate estimation of sliding parameters.
